    IMPLEMENTING CLUSTERING TECHNIQUE IN TEACHING VOCABULARY

    Tujuan Penelitian ini 1) menentukan adanya kenaikan signifikan pada prestasi siswa; 2) menyelidiki topik paling menarik; dan 3) menyelidiki masalah yang dihadapi siswa. Subjek penelitian adalah siswa kelas satu SMAN 1 Natar. Kelas X-2 sebagai kelas penelitian dan X-1 sebagai kelas percobaan. Penelitian ini menerapkan one way repeated measures anova dan t-test. Peningkatan nilai pretest dan postest adalah 29.56. Hasil t-test menunjukkan t-ratio lebih tinggi dibandingkan t-table (39.134>2.042) dengan tahap signifikan p2.042) with the level of significant is p <0.05 and significant two-tail is p=0.000.     A Comparative Study in Teaching Pronunciation Between English Song and Poetry

    There are two objectives of this research; (1) to know whether there is significant difference of students’ pronunciation achievement between taught through English song and through poetry (2) to see which one of the techniques is more effective for teaching pronunciation. This research was conducted at the first year of SMP Xaverius Kotabumi, VII A as an experimental class and VII B as a control class. This was quantitative research. Firstly it is found that the means of the posttest in Experimental Class was 72.75 and the mean of posttest in Control Class is 69.87 with the mean difference is 2.88 and p is lower than 0.05 (0.023<0.05). It indicated that we should reject Ho and accept H1 because there is a significant difference of pronunciation achievement between students taught through English song and poetry. Secondly, the highest score of pretest in experimental class is 72.50 and the highest posttest is 82.50, and the gain is 10.00. Compared with the result in control class, the highest score of pretest is 75 and the posttest is 81.00, and the gain is 6.00. It can be concluded that English song technique is more effective in teaching pronunciation than poetry.Keywords: English song, poetry, pronunciation achievemen

    AN ANALYSIS OF CLASSROOM INTERACTION

    The objectives of this research are (1) to investigate the process of classroom interaction in teaching and learning process, (2) to find out the pattern of classroom interaction suggested by Sinclair and Coulthard Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) model in English speaking class at SMP 17 GedongTataan. The result reveals that classroom interaction process in English speaking class reflected the pattern proposed by Initiation-Response-Feedback (IRF) Model. There are six exchanges there are which occurred in Sinclair and Coulthard model including Teacher Inform, Teacher Direct, Teacher Elicit, Student Elicit, Student Inform, and Check. The percentage of Student Inform (Initiation-Feedback/IF) was 33.97%, Teacher Elicit (Initiation-Response-Feedback/IRF) was 16.89%, Student Elicit (Initiation-Response/IR) was 14.95%, Teacher Inform (Initiation/I) was 14.12%, Check (Initiation-Response-Feedback/IRF) was 13.01%, and Teacher Direct (Initiation-respond-feedback/IRF) was 7.20%.  Key words: student elicit, student inform, teacher direct, teacher elicit, teacher inform

    A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF STUDENTS’ READING

    Abstract:The objective of this research is to find out whether there is anysignificant difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement betweenthe students who are taught through NHT technique and those through PRtechnique. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Seputih Raman, LampungTengah. Two classes were taken as the sample of the research; class XI IPA 4 andclass XI IPS 4. Pretest-posttest control group design was applied in this research.The result in both experimental classes showed that there was a significantincrease of students’ reading comprehension achievement after they were taughtthrough NHT technique and PR technique (p<0.05; p= .000). The data analysisshowed that the mean score in the experimental class increased from 61.48 into73.81. Meanwhile, the mean score in the control class increased from 58.50 into66.92. It can be concluded that NHT technique is more effective to help thestudents improve their reading ability than PR technique is.     THE EFFECT OF STUDENTS’ SELF-ESTEEM ON THEIR ENGLISH SPEAKING ABILITY

    Tujuan penelitian ini untuk menyelidiki efek harga diri siswa terhadap kemampuan berbicara pada siswa dan mencari tingkat harga diri yang lebih berpengaruh terhadap kemampuan bicara siswa. Tiga puluh siswa terpilih sebagai sampel. Data diperoleh dengan menyebarkan kuisioner mengenai harga diri siswa dan tes berbicara. Data dianalisa menggunakan one-way Anova. Hasil analisa menunjukkan nilai-f lebih besar daripada table-f (81.75 >33.50) dengan p33.50) with p<0.001. H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted. It means that students’ self-esteem has effect on their speaking ability. The result also shows that students with high self-esteem reaches the highest score in speaking ability with mean of 87.40, normal self-esteem reaches mean of 77.80, and low self-esteem reaches mean of 66.80. High self-esteem has better effect on students’ speaking ability.Keywords: attitude, inhibition, risk-taking, self-esteem

    THE USE OF ROLE PLAY TECHNIQUE IN IMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ABILITY

    The objective of this research is to know whether there is a significant improvement of the students’ speaking ability after being taught through Role Play.The population of this research was the Second year students of SMA Negeri 1 Tanjungbintang. One group pre-test and post-test design was used.The mean score of pre-test was 57.13 and post-test was 82.  It proved that the students’ scores increase significantly because p<0.05 (p=0.000). It can be concluded that there is a significant difference of students’ achievement in speaking ability after being taught through Role Play technique.     THE INFLUENCE OF CONTEXTUAL CLUES STRATEGY ON THE STUDENTS READING COMPREHENSION

    The objective of the research was to investigate whether or not the contextual clues strategy can give the influence on the students’ reading comprehension achievement. The researcher applied one group pre-test post-test design. The sample of the research was the third grade of SMP Taman Siswa, Tanjung Karang. The finding revealed that contextual clues strategy gave influence to the students’ reading comprehension achievement. It can be seen from the progress of students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught through contextual clues strategy. The result of the research showed that the mean score of students’ post-test in the experimental class was 78.63 higher than the mean score of students’ pre-test was 58.63, with the mean difference was 20.0. The value of two significant was 0.000. It means that H0 was rejected and H1 was accepted since 0.000 < 0.05.  Keywords: contextual clues strategy,descriptive text, reading

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada pengaruh antara penghargaan diri dengan kemampuan memahami bacaan dan apakah siswa dengan penghargaan diri yang tinggi lebih baik kemampuan memahami bacaanya dibandingkan dengan siswa yang memiliki penghargaan diri yang sedang dan rendah. Penulis memberikan soal-soal berupa teks kepada siswa dan angket untuk mengetahui tingkat penghargaan diri siswa. Penulis menggunakan desain Ex Post Facto pada penelitiannya dan One-Way Anova untuk menganalisa hubungan anta kedua variabel tersebut. Pada penelitian ini, ditemukan bahwa ada pengaruh yang signifikan antara penghargaan diri terhadap kemampuan memahami bacaan pada siswa dengan sig 0.000 (sig > 0.05).This research is to investigate the effect of students’ self-esteem on their reading comprehension achievement and to find out whether students with high self-esteem get reading comprehension better than students with middle and low self-esteem. The writer administered the test of self-esteem and reading comprehension at the first year students. The writer used the Ex Post Facto as the research design and One-Way Anova to indicate the effect of students’ self-esteem on their reading comprehension achievement.     TEACHING READING COMPREHENSION THROUGH THINK-PAIR-SHARE (TPS) TECHNIQUE

    The objective of this research is to investigate whether there is a significant difference of the students’ reading comprehension achievement after being taught through Think-Pair-Share (TPS) and to find the problem that the students face during the application of TPS. The population of this research was the second year students of SMPN 8 Bandar Lampung consisting of nine classes. One group pre-test and post-test design was carried out to analyze the significant difference. Besides that, the interview was done to see the problems that the students face. By comparing between the mean of pre-test (x=50.44) and post-test (x=62.89), it can be found that the increase of the mean was 12.45. It proved that the technique has effective because p<0.05 (p=0.00). Therefore, it can be concluded that there was a significant difference of students’ achievement in reading comprehension achievement before and after being taught through TPS and the problems occurred during the teaching-learning concerned with the students’ concentration and their ability in getting the main idea and inferring the difficult words.     The Implementation of Role Play in Increasing Students’ Speaking Ability

    The objective of this research is to find out whether there is significant increase of students’ speaking ability after being taught through Role Play. The population of this research is the second year of SMK PGRI 1 Kota Agung Tanggamus that consists of 6 classes and one class is taken as the sample. The sample is selected by using the random sampling technique by using lottery. This is a quantitative research and one group pretest-posttest design was employed. This research was conducted in 5 meetings for 3 weeks. The result of pretest shows that the mean score of students’ pronunciation is 10.40. The mean score of students’ vocabulary is 9.33, fluency is 9.33, comprehension is 9.33, grammar is 8.26, The total score in pretest is 1410 and the mean score is 47.00. The result of posttest shows that the mean score of students’ pronunciation is 13.20, vocabulary is 13.73, fluency is 12.66, comprehension is 13.20, and grammar is 13.06. The total score in posttest is 1972 and the mean score is 65.73. It was therefore concluded that Role Play could significantly increase students speaking ability. Key words:implementation, role play, speaking ability
