A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF STUDENTS’ READING ACHIEVEMENT TAUGHT THROUGH PREDICTIVE AND MAKING INFERENCE
The objectives of the research are (1) to investigate whether there was difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement between those taught through predictive technique and those taught through making inferences technique, and (2) to determine which one of the two techniques was more effective for teaching reading comprehension. The researcher applied pre-test and post-test control group design. This experimental method dealt with two groups: the experimental class and control class. The sample of the research was the second grade of SMAN 1 Kotagajah. The findings of the research revealed that there was difference of students’ reading comprehension achievement between those taught through predictive technique and those taught through making inferences technique. In addition, predictive technique was more effective than making inferences technique to encourage the students’ motivation to be more active during the process of learning reading. It can be seen from the results of post-test in the experimental class was 81.50 which higher than the mean score of students’ post-test in the control class which was 72.44, with mean difference of score was 9.06. The value of two tailed significant was 0.000. It means that H 0 was rejected and H1 was accepted since 0.000 < 0.05. Keywords: making inferences technique, predictive technique, reading
COMPARATIVE STUDY OF READING ACHIEVEMENT OF NARRATIVE BETWEEN STUDENTS TAUGHT THROUGH GRAPHIC ORGANIZER AND TRANSLATION
The objectives of the research are to find out whether there is significant difference in the improvement of students reading comprehension achievement of English narrative text between students taught through graphic organizer and taught through literal translationand to find out which one is more effective technique. The research was conducted at SMAN 1 Natar especially the first grade. To gain the objective of the research, the researcher conducted quantitative design with pre-test posttest experimental group design. The test result showed that the mean of posttest in the experimental group one was 79.8and the mean of the posttest in the experimental class two was 72, probability level (p) was 0.000. The experimental class two gained the lower average score in posttest than experimental class one. The mean difference was 7.87. It was lower than 0.05. It means that H1was accepted and H0 was rejected since 0.00<0.05. It proves that the treatments given by the researcher had better effect of the students’ achievement. Based on the data, the researcher concludes that the application of graphic organizer improves students’ reading comprehension achievement of narrative text. INCREASING STUDENTS’ READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY THROUGH THINK PAIR SHARE TECHNIQUE IN PROCEDURE TEXT
This research aimed at finding out whether there is any significant difference between the score of students’ reading comprehension ability in procedure text before and after being taught through Think Pair Share technique. This research was conducted based on researcher’s experience in SMAN 1 Bandar Sribhawono that the students still got low scores in reading comprehension test. The X1 class consisting of 30 students was chosen as the sample of this research. This research used one group pretest posttest design, and the result was found by comparing the differences score between pre-test and post-test by using SPSS 17.0. The differences of the scores were calculated by using Repeated Measure t-test. Then, the result showed that the mean score of students’ pre-test was 68.27 and the mean score of students’ post-test was 81.33. It means that the increase of students’ score was 13.06. It indicated that H1 is accepted because the significant (2-tailed) value was 0.000 (p=0.000, p t table (13,315 > 2,045). So, it can be concluded that Think Pair Share technique can be applied and recommended as a reference to teach English in reading class.
