    THE IMPLEMENTATION OF AUTHENTIC MATERIAL IN READING ABILITY AT THE SECOND GRADE

    Tujuan penelitian ini adalah (1) untuk mengetahui aspek apakah yang paling meningkat setelah diajar dengan menggunakan materi autentik dan (2) untuk melihat masalah apa yang dihadapi siswa di dalam penerapan materi autentik dalam pelajaran membaca. Penelitian ini telah dilaksanakan di SMKN 1 Metro. Subjek penelitian ini adalah siswa-siswa kelas XI AP2 dari SMKN 1 Metro terdiri dari 25 siswa. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif dan kualitatif dengan menggunakan desain one group pre test post test. Hasil penelitian menunjukan bahwa referensi adalah aspek membaca yang paling meningkat dan masalah yang dihadapi siswa adalah sulit untuk memahami arti kata dan sebagian siswa mempunyai masalah di dalam pengucapan. Hal ini dapat dilihat hasil rata-rata pre test ke post test adalah 20.4 di pre test dan meningkat ke 24.24 di post test. The objectives of this research are (1) to find out which aspect of reading is mostly improved after being taught using authentic material and (2) to see what problem that are faced by students in the implementation of teaching reading using authentic material. This research was conducted at SMKN 1 Metro. The subject of this research was the students of class XI AP2 of SMKN 1 Metro consisting of 25 students. This research was quantitative and qualitative research which used one group pre test post test design. The result of the research showed that reference were the reading aspect that mostly improved and the problems the students faced difficult to understand the meaning of the words and some of students have problem in pronunciation. It could be seen from the result of mean score from the pre test to post test which was 20.4 in the pre test and increased to 24.24 in the post test. Keywords: authentic material, readin

    The implementation of information gap in teaching speaking at the second grade

    The aims of this research were (1) to find out whether there was an improvement of the students’ speaking ability after they were taught through information gap and (2) to find out which aspect of speaking skills increased the most after the treatments. The subject was 35 students of class VIII D, the second year students of MTs Pelita Purwodadi. The research design was one group pretest posttest. The treatments were conducted in three meetings with 80 minutes for each meeting. The data were taken using speaking test and were analyzed by using repeated measure t-test. The result showed that there was a significant difference on students’ speaking ability (p<0.05, p=0.00). The average scores of the pretest was 64.23 and the posttest was 75.17. Furthermore, grammar was the speaking aspect that increased the most. From this result, it shows that Information Gap is an appropriate technique to help the students’ in learning speaking.Keywords: Information Gap, speaking, improvemen

    Comparative study of students’ writing achievement using Roundtable and STAD techniques

    This research was aimed to compare the two language teaching techniques of writing, that is Roundtable and STAD techniques, and  to investigate the student’s appraisal after being taught through Roundtable technique, and to know the student’s appraisal after being taught through STAD technique. This research was conducted at the tenth grade of SMAN 1 Pringsewu in academic year 2019/2020 using two groups pretest posttest design. The data were collected using tests and questionnaire then analyzed using independent samples t-test and through descriptive analysis in SPSS ver. 20. The results show that: first, there is no significant difference of students’ writing achievement on descriptive text. Second, Roundtable technique helped students to learn writing of descriptive text through the activities, the material, and the teacher’s explanation during the learning process since this technique was well implemented regarding to its procedures. Third, STAD technique is effective to help students to write descriptive text through the teacher’s explanation, the activities, and the material in learning process.     Teaching reading using GIST viewed from students' intelligence at tenth grade of SMK N 1 Pekalongan

    Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui (1) Perbedaan yang signifikan pada  pemahaman membaca siswa sebelum dan sesudah implementasi GIST; (2) Perbedaan yang signifikan pada pemahaman membaca siswa antara siswa dengan kecerdasan tinggi dan rendah; dan (3) Korelasi antara kecerdasan siswa dan pemahaman membaca siswa. Penelitian quasi-eksperimental ini menggunakan desain satu kelompok pretest post-test. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) Penggunaan GIST dalam proses meningkatkan pemahaman membaca siswa membawa respon positif bagi siswa (2) Siswa dengan kecerdasan tingkat tinggi cenderung memiliki pemahaman membaca yang lebih baik daripada siswa dengan kecerdasan rendah (3) Ada korelasi antara kecerdasan siswa dan pemahaman membaca siswa. Jadi, proses pemahaman bacaan melibatkan kecerdasan manusia untuk mendapatkan informasi teks yang benar. Dan menggunakan GIST dalam proses belajar mengajar, itu juga membantu guru dalam penyampaian materi sehingga lebih mudah dipahami oleh siswa. The research is conducted in order to find out (1) the significant difference on  students’ reading comprehension before and after the implementation of GIST; (2) the significant difference on students’ reading comprehension between students with high and low intelligence; and (3) There is correlation between students’ intelligence and students’ reading comprehension. This quasi-experimental research employs one group pretest post-test design. The results show that (1) The use of the GIST in the process of improving the students’ reading comprehension brings positive response for the students, (2) The Sstudents with high level of intelligence tend to have better reading comprehension than the student with low intelligence, (3) There is correlation between students’ intelligence and students’ reading comprehension. So, the process of reading comprehension involved human intelligence to get the right information of the text.     Using WhatsApp to promote students’ writing achievement at the first grade students of SMAN 3 Bandarlampung

    Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui apakah ada peningkatan signifikan pada kemampuan siswa dalam menulis setelah siswa diajarkan menggunakan WhatsApp sebagai media dalam pembelajaran menulis. Penelitian ini adalah penelitian kuantitatif. Sampel penelitian ini adalah 30 siswa tingkat pertama SMAN 3 Bandar Lampung. Test menulis digunakan sebagai alat untuk pengambilan data. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat peningkatan signifikan pada kemampuan menulis siswa setelah penerapan WhatsApp dalam menulis teks deskriptif dan aspek content adalah aspek menulis yang paling meningkat. Dapat disarankan bahwa mengajarkan menulis teks deskriptif menggunakan WhatsApp efektif dalam meningkatkan kemampuan menulis siswa.   The objectives of this research were to find out the increase of the students’  writing achievement after the students were taught by using WhatsApp as the media in teaching writing and to investigate which aspect of writing got the highest score after the implementation of WhatsApp in teaching writing descriptive text. This research was quantitative research. The subjects were 30 students of the first-grade students of SMAN 3 Bandar Lampung. The writing tests were used as the research instrument. The data were analyzed by using the Repeated Measure t-test. The result showed that there is a statistically significant increase in students’ writing achievement after the implementation of WhatsApp in teaching writing descriptive text and the content aspect of writing was the aspect that improved the most. This suggests that teaching writing descriptive text through WhatsApp is effective in increasing students’ writing achievement.Keywords: WhatsApp, teaching writing, descriptive text

    The implementation of Guessing Game technique in teaching speaking

    Capability of speaking in English has necessarily become the need of the students of senior high school. However, the majority of the students have low capability of speaking. This was due to a number of factors, one which was the inappropriate use of the method the teacher used in the classroom. The guessing game technique was beloved to have enabled students to improve their speaking capability.The current research aimed to investigate i) the significant improvement of the students’ speaking ability after the implementation of the guessing game technique, ii) the effect of the guessing game technique on the students’ capability in every single aspect of speaking and, iii) the correlation between the students’ attitudes and their speaking achievement.The subjects of the research were 35 students at SMAN 1 Sidomulyo. There were three raters who assessed students’ speaking ability. The data were collected trough the tests (pre-test and post-test) and questionnaires. Furthermore, the Repeated measure t-test was used to analyze the data collected from both the pre and the post tests. While, the data from questionnaires were analyzed by using Pearson product moment.The results showed that the guessing game technique has a statistically significant effect on the students’ speaking ability with the significant level 0.05. Moreover, there was correlation between the students’ attitudes and their speaking achievement.     The implementation of Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) to improve students’ writing of descriptive text

    The objectives of this research were to find out whether teaching by using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) could give improvement toward students’ descriptive text writing or not  and to find out which aspect of writing that improved the most after they have been taught by using Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM). This research was conducted at the first grade of SMPN 10 Bandar Lampung in academic year 2019/2020 using one group pretest posttest design. The sample of this research was VII B class which consisted of 29 students. The result showed that there was an improvement of students’ writing descriptive text after the implementation of PWIM. In addition, all aspects of writing improved regarding to the result, but vocabulary improved the most.  Briefly, referring to the result above, it can be said that PWIM is well applied to improve students’ ability in writing descriptive text and all aspects of writing

    The effect of using WhatsApp in online learning setting on Indonesian EFL students’ writing apprehension and the relation with their writing achievement

    The primary goals of this research are to investigate the students’ writing apprehension level after being taught through WhatsApp in online learning setting and to find out the correlation between writing apprehension and writing achievement. This study was carried out quantitatively and involved one class of grade X which consisted of thirty-five students. The data was collected through English Writing Test and Writing Apprehension Test, a questionnaire that was developed by Daly and Miller (1975). To test the hypotheses, paired sample t-test and Pearson correlation analysis were applied. The finding of paired sample t-test revealed that there was a significant reduction in the students’ writing apprehension level after the implementation of WhatsApp in online writing classes. Meanwhile, for the correlational analysis, it was done three times to obtain more specific results; the correlation of the data before the treatment, the correlation of the data after the treatment, and the correlation of gain scores of the data. The results showed respectively that two correlational analyses had very high correlation and the last one had an average correlation. Furthermore, all findings showed significant negative correlation; meaning that there was a significant inverse relationship between writing apprehension and writing achievement. This implied that the lower the level of writing apprehension is, the higher the score of writing achievement would be. In conclusion, the implementation of WhatsApp in online writing class is effective to improve students' writing achievement and effective to reduce students’ writing apprehension in Indonesian EFL students

    The effect of jigsaw on speaking performance of first grade students at SMAN 3 Bandarlampung

    This research was aimed at investigating the significant difference of students’ speaking performance after being taught by using Jigsaw. This research was conducted at SMAN 3 Bandar Lampung in which the participants were 33 students of First Grade. The data were collected by using speaking test using. The data collected were analyzed through Paired Sample T-Test in SPSS version 20. The result showed that there is a significant difference of students’ speaking performance after the implementation of jigsaw, with a significance level at .001 (p < .05).  This technique makes students get used to the target language being learnt and provides more language exposure that can help students to lessen their hesitance and reluctance in saying or uttering words or sentences in performing speaking in English. It is suggested for further researchers to investigate the effectiveness of jigsaw in teaching other language skills or aspects in different level of education

    The effectiveness of English songs in teaching pronunciation to senior high school students at MAN 1 Bandar Lampung

    The objectives of this research were to find out whether there was a significant difference in students’ pronunciation ability after the implementation of English songs in the teaching-learning process and the students’ perception towards the use of English songs as the teaching media. The approach of the research was quantitative. The subjects were 36 students of class X MIA 5 at MAN 1 Bandar Lampung in 2019/2020 academic year. Pronunciation tests, recording, and questionnaire were used to collect the data. The students’ pronunciation scores were taken from the pretest and the posttest which had been recorded by the audio recorder and compared by using Paired Sample T-Test with the significant level 0.01. The results showed that there is a significant difference in students’ pronunciation ability after the implementation of English songs from the pretest (25.07) to the posttest (50.32). Moreover, the questionnaire was analyzed by using a Frequency Distribution Table. The results showed that out of 36 students, 34 of them had positive perception toward the implementation of English songs in learning pronunciation with a percentage of 94.4%. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the use of English songs is effective in teaching pronunciation. Keywords: English songs, teaching pronunciation, perception
