    Monolingual or bilingual approaches: The effectiveness of teaching approach in EFL speaking classroom

    Speaking is considered an important English skill, yet many English Foreign Learnersstruggle in communicating their ideas in English. Therefore, this research aimed to comparewhich approach between monolingual or bilingual gives a better effect to be applied in anEnglish-speaking classroom. This research employed an experimental design, whichcompared two groups taught using two different approaches. Oral assessment was utilized tocollect the data, which were computed using SPSS 27. The data were calculated by usingformulas, including, the homogeneity test, paired sample T-test, and independent groupsamples test. The results showed that the experimental group obtained a pre-test score of 32and a post-test score of 53, with a paired sample T-test value of -30.309. On the other hand,the control group gained a pre-test score of 31 and a post-test score of 35, and a pairedsample T-test value of -6.767. The paired sample T-test results showed that both approachescaused some significant improvements in the students’ speaking achievement. On the otherhand, the final scores resulted in the Independent Sample Test as 5.033 with a Sig. (2-tailed)of 0.00, which is lower than the critical value (0.05). This indicated that there is a significantdifference between students’ speaking achievement after being taught through monolingualand bilingual approaches, where the students who received the monolingual approach gainedthe most improvement.     ABSTRACT THE CORRELATION BETWEEN STUDENTS’ FREQUENCY OF WATCHING ENGLISH CARTOON MOVIE AND STUDENTS’ VOCABULARY MASTERY By Yunike Denasti Mandasari This research was aimed to know : “There was significant correlation between students’ frequency of watching English Cartoon movie and Students; vocabulary Mastery SMAN 15 Bandar Lampung in academic year 2020/2021. The research method of this research was a quantitative. The population of the research was the twelve grade students of SMAN 15 Bandar Lampung in academic year 2020/2021, the number of students was 32 students. The researcher gave a questionnaire to know students’ frequency of watching English Cartoon movie, and test to know the students’ vocabulary mastery. The data that has been gathered was analysed by Pearson Product Moment Correlation. Data Analysis shows that there is significant correlation between two variable since p<0.01 (p=0.98). It can be happened because most of students use their time to watching English Cartoon movie and it can enrich their vocabulary

    The process of learning English for students in vocational education programs requires innovation to accommodate learning conditions in order that students can apply communicative skills according to the needs of the real world of work. The application of Project Based Learning is considered relevant to be developed in vocational education to develop targeted core competencies, and other competencies relevant to the needs of the world of work such as the ability to cooperate, creativity, problem solving, etc.  This research aimed at observing students learning patterns developed through the application of this method.  This study used descriptive qualitative method to analyze the data. The research results indicate that the application of PBL shows the effect of PBL on student learning patterns such as the ability to manage groups and work in groups. In the process of individual learning, PBL is considered to support individual learning in the aspect of motivation, reduce learning tension, improve learning performance and understanding. This study also found several learning activities that can support student learning processes such as group learning activities in class, group assignments outside class and independent learning

    Improving students’ ability in mastering simple present tense by using Duolingo App

    The objective of this research is to investigate the significant improvement in students’ ability in mastering simple present tense after being taught by using Duolingo app. This research was quantitative and used a one-group pretest-posttest design as the research design for this study. This research involved the students of VIII 1 class at SMP Negeri 1 Sukadana which consists of 30 students. In collecting the data, the pre-test and post-test were administered. The data were analyzed by using Paired Sample T-Test (SPSS 25.0 for windows) to test the hypothesis in which the significance was determined by α<0.05. The result of data computation of the value of 2-tailed significance was 0.00<0.05 which is lower than 0.05. Based on that result it is indicated that there is a significant improvement in students’ ability in mastering simple present tense after being taught by using Duolingo app.Keywords: simple present tense, duolingo applicatio

    Analysis of communication strategies used by students in business english classes at the faculty of economics and business, University of Lampung

    Communication plays an important role in today's global environment because everyone will be inseparable from communication activities. Language is a communication tool used as a means to express and convey information, to learn about people and the world around them. This study describes the use of communication strategies in  English classes in the Department of Management, Faculty of Economics and Business, University of Lampung (FEB Unila). This study aims to find out how the use of  communication strategies  by students during discussions in class and  their speaking skills in using these communication strategies.  This study used a case study approach to investigate the use of communication strategies at the perspective  of language proficiency because the most significant predictor of  the use of a particular communication strategy was language proficiency. The subjects of this study were taken purposively as  much as 1 class with a total of 36 students with high and low proficiency levels. They are first-year students of the S1 Management Department at FEB Unila. In this study, researchers used several data sources, namely observation, interviews, and documentation. This is intended to answer research questions based on data triangulation so that the data obtained is more reliable. The results of this study show that there are nine communication strategies used by learners in speaking for discussion; message abandonment, approximation, stalling, literal translation, code switching, convoluted, begging for help, mime, and using versatile words. The study also found that the strategies used in learning influenced learning outcomes in English communication where strategies such as approximation, literal translation, stalling, convoluted, asking for help, and mime greatly helped learners to express their ideas in discussions and were shown to get good and excellent grades in almost all speaking performance criteria.  Keywords: Communication Strategies, English Language Teaching, Business English

    Enhancing tenth-grade students' reading comprehension via small group discussions on narrative texts

    This research aimed to increase students' reading comprehension and learning activities using small group discussions. The researcher employed the Classroom Action study design as a study approach. This study was conducted through two cycles involving tenth-grade students at SMK N 9 Bandar Lampung. The researcher employed an observation sheet and a reading test to gather data. The researcher discovered that students' learning activities improved significantly during the first and second cycles. The average score of the students' observation sheets in cycle 1 and cycle 2 was 6.38 and 7.61. Students' learning activity improved significantly during cycles 1 and 2, with an improvement of 1.2 in the active category. The results of students' reading tests from cycle 1 to cycle 2 provided significant improvements in students' reading comprehension during the first and second cycles. The average reading test score for students in cycle 1 was 62, while 82 in cycle 2. It implies that students reading test scores gained around 20 points during cycles 1 and 2. Meanwhile, 82% of students scored higher than the MCC. Based on the research's findings, the researcher concluded that implementing small group discussions improved students' learning activities and reading comprehension in tenth-grade students at SMK N 9 Bandar Lampung in the academic year 2022/2023

    Students’ perception of using Google classroom for EFL learning

    Students need to be proficient in using technology, specifically e-learning apps like Google Classroom which is created by Google. Google Classroom connects with other Google apps such as Google Form, Google Drive, and Google Spreadsheet. Google Classroom is popular for academic purposes because it is user-friendly and does not take up much device storage space. A study was conducted to determine students' perceptions of using Google Classroom. Qualitative research is the research design in this study. The questionnaire, which contained 13 questions, was administered using Google Forms and data analysis was conducted using SPSS. The results of the study indicated that students agreed with using Google Classroom, but emphasized the need to integrate it with face-to-face learning, which aids their comprehension of material. Additionally, students find Google Classroom helpful for submitting assignments or accessing supplementary materials

    Teaching narrative short story by using jigsaw technique to improve students’ vocabulary achievement

    Vocabulary has an essential role in learning a language, especially in learning English as a foreign language that links four skills i.e., listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and all about words or particular sets of words. Therefore, the researcher conducted this research (1) to determine the significant improvement in students’ vocabulary achievement after the students were taught using jigsaw technique and (2) to reveal the difficulties students faced in learning vocabulary using jigsaw technique. This research used quantitative and qualitative methods with 32 students of class X.2 at SMAN 7 Bandar Lampung. This research used a vocabulary test and interview. Pre-test and posttest are used to collect the data. The researcher used a Repeated Measures t-test. The result showed that the pre-test mean was 70.08 and the post-test mean was 83.20, while the t-value is 9.186 at the significant level is 0.000

    Students’ perception of Google Translate as a media for translating English materials

    This research aims to describe students' perceptions of using Google Translate to translate English material. In this research, researchers used the ex-post facto method. The methodology used is quantitative, using a questionnaire with 40 Likert rating statements with 5 choices: strongly disagree, disagree, neutral, agree, and strongly agree. The population in this research was English Language Education Students at the University of Lampung, and the sample consisted of four batches, namely the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2022 classes. Data analysis was tested using the Rasch model via Winsteps software. Interesting findings were found that students showed different response patterns, while item analysis showed that there were six mismatched items and items in one construct measuring the same logit instrument with unidimensional and multiple item requirements as well as assessment validity, which indicated that ranking simplification would produce more measurement results. right. Data shows that all students know about Google Translate as a medium for translating from one language to another. Students consider using Google Translate to translate and use it to learn pronunciation and increase vocabulary. This means that students know other functions of Google Translate. In the learning process, students of the English education study program have a lot of English language material. In understanding English material, students admitted to using Google Translate to translate it into Indonesian and vice versa. Keywords: perception, google translate
