    DATIV - Remote enhancement of smart aerosol measurement system using Raspberry Pi based distributed sensors

    Enclosed public spaces are the hotspots for airborne disease transmission. To measure and maintain indoor air quality in terms of airborne transmission, an open source, low cost and distributed array of Particulate Matter Sensors has been developed and named as Dynamic Aerosol Transport for Indoor Ventilation or DATIV system. This system can use multiple Particulate Matter Sensors (PMS) simultaneously and can be remotely controlled using a Raspberry Pie based operating system. The data acquisition system can be easily operated using the GUI within any common browser installed on a remote device such as a PC or Smartphone with corresponding IP address. The software architecture and validation measurements are presented together with possible future developments

    Disturbances can be any discrete events that significantly affect ecosystem components, they can be natural events such as wildfires and floods, or anthropogenic events like farming, mining, and deforestation. Disturbances are the most important source of temporal and spatial heterogeneity and shape the composition and dynamics of natural communities. However, after many years of research, it is still difficult to predict the response patterns of natural communities to disturbances accurately. This dissertation aimed to investigate the taxonomic, functional, and trophic response of beetle communities to three types of disturbances in field studies. Chapter 3 is based on an experiment in an unmanaged heathland area that was affected by a severe wildfire (natural disturbance). Emergence tents and wild boar carcasses were used to analyse the impact of wildfires on re-colonization and emergence of carrion-associated scavenging beetle species from local soils. Chapter 4 focused on effects of fallows at the local scale and proportions of permanent agricultural grasslands at the landscape scale on the taxonomic and functional diversity of the emerging ground beetles in intensively managed cereal fields (anthropogenic disturbance). Chapter 5 addressed the trophic links between the prey (dipterans emerging from lakes or terrestrial collembolans) and predators (ground beetles) at a post-mining lakeshore (anthropogenic disturbance) and compared the patterns of their isotopic niches (δ13C and δ15N) with data from a natural lakeshore. Overall, species composition, trait diversity and trophic interactions were more sensitive to indicate the disturbance conditions than traditional diversity indices, independent on the nature of disturbance (natural or anthropogenic). When the intensity and frequency of disturbance is moderate, the habitat complexity can be maintained, and the taxonomic and functional diversity of beetle communities could even be promoted by the disturbance, rare species with specialized preferences could be conserved. Disturbances, however, do not just affect consumers at higher trophic levels (e.g. predators or scavengers), but may have even greater impact on communities at basal trophic levels (e.g. aquatic dipterans, Collembola, herbivorous beetles) and could further affect the feeding preferences of predatory beetles that utilize such organisms as prey. The findings not only provided unique data and novel insights to effects of land-use and management on the conservation of beetle communities in disturbed landscapes, but also highlighted the need to better understand the impacts of disturbances on integrated aspects of the ecological communities.Störungen können alle diskreten Ereignisse sein, die signifikante Auswirkungen auf die Komponenten eines Ökosystems haben. Dabei kann es sich um natürliche Ereignisse wie Waldbrände und Überschwemmungen oder um anthropogene Ereignisse wie Landwirtschaft, Bergbau und Abholzung handeln. Störungen sind die Hauptursache für zeitliche und räumliche Heterogenität und beeinflussen die Zusammensetzung und Dynamik natürlicher Lebensgemeinschaften. Doch auch nach vielen Jahren der Forschung ist es immer noch schwierig, die Reaktionsmuster natürlicher Gemeinschaften auf Störungen genau vorherzusagen. Ziel dieser Arbeit war es, die taxonomischen, funktionellen und trophischen Reaktionen von Käfergemeinschaften auf drei Arten von Störungen in Feldstudien zu untersuchen. Kapitel 3 basiert auf einem Experiment in einem nicht bewirtschafteten Heidegebiet, das von einem schweren Waldbrand (natürliche Störung) betroffen war. Die Auswirkungen von Waldbränden auf die Wiederbesiedlung und das Auftreten aasfressender Aaskäferarten in lokalen Böden wurden mit Hilfe von Emergenzzelten und Wildschweinkadavern untersucht. In Kapitel 4 wurden die Auswirkungen von Brachen auf lokaler Ebene und des Dauergrünlandanteils auf Landschaftsebene auf die taxonomische und funktionelle Diversität von Laufkäfern in intensiv bewirtschafteten Getreidefeldern (anthropogene Störung) untersucht. Kapitel 5 befasste sich mit den trophischen Beziehungen zwischen Beutetieren (aus Seen aufsteigende Dipteren oder terrestrische Collembolen) und Räubern (Laufkäfer) an einem Seeufer nach dem Bergbau (anthropogene Störung) und verglich die Muster ihrer Isotopennischen (δ13C und δ15N) mit Daten von einem natürlichen Seeufer. Insgesamt reagierten die Artenzusammensetzung, die Merkmalsvielfalt und die trophischen Interaktionen empfindlicher auf Störungsbedingungen als herkömmliche Diversitätsindizes, unabhängig von der Art der Störung (natürlich oder anthropogen). Bei mäßiger Intensität und Häufigkeit von Störungen kann die Komplexität von Lebensräumen erhalten bleiben, und die taxonomische und funktionelle Vielfalt von Käfergemeinschaften kann durch Störungen sogar gefördert werden; seltene Arten mit speziellen Präferenzen können erhalten bleiben. Störungen wirken sich jedoch nicht nur auf Konsumenten höherer trophischer Ebenen aus (z.B. Räuber oder Aasfresser), sondern können sogar noch größere Auswirkungen auf Gemeinschaften der basalen trophischen Ebenen haben (z.B. aquatische Dipteren, Collembolen oder herbivore Käfer) und könnten darüber hinaus die Nahrungspräferenzen räuberischer Käfer beeinflussen, die solche Organismen als Beute nutzen. Diese Ergebnisse liefern nicht nur einzigartige Daten und neue Erkenntnisse über den Einfluss von Landnutzung und Management auf die Erhaltung von Käfergemeinschaften in gestörten Landschaften, sondern unterstreichen auch die Notwendigkeit, die Auswirkungen von Störungen auf integrierte Aspekte ökologischer Gemeinschaften besser zu verstehen

    On the creation of a material bond between L-PBF manufac-2tured AZ91 and Ti-6Al-4V components in the context of medi-3cal applications

    Within the scope of these investigations, the feasibility of a material bond between Ti-6Al-4V and the magnesium alloy AZ91 is analyzed. Ti-6Al-4V is frequently used for implants due to its biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and specific strength. However, depending on the surface quality, the attachment behavior of the bone to the implant varies. Magnesium implants promote the regeneration of bone tissue and biodegrade as the bone tissue heals. Combining the properties of both materials in one implant enables a reduced implant volume and increased stability. For this reason, this study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of creating a material bond between the materials Ti-6Al-4V and AZ91. For this purpose, Ti-6Al-4V truncated cones and AZ91 sleeves were produced using the additive manufacturing process of laser powder bed fusion (L-PBF). The as-built sleeves were then pressed onto machined truncated cones. Since zinc serves as a lubricant and has good diffusion properties with the materials used as a result of heat treatment, a comparison was made between zinc-coated and the as-built Ti-6Al-4V samples. This showed that a bond was created after hot isostatic pressing and that the push-out force could be increased by more than 4.5 times. Consequently, a proof of feasibility was demonstrated, and a high potential for applications in medical technology was shown

    Occurrence, antimicrobial resistance and genomic features of Klebsiella pneumoniae from broiler chicken in Faisalabad, Pakistan

    The dissemination of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in critical priority pathogens is a significant threat. Non-clinical reservoirs of AMR, such as agriculture and food production facilities, may contribute to the transmission of clinically relevant pathogens such as multidrug-resistant (MDR) Klebsiella pneumoniae. There is currently very limited knowledge regarding the population structure and genomic diversity of K. pneumoniae in poultry production in Pakistan. We explored healthy broilers in a commercial farm from Faisalabad, Pakistan, and identified six K. pneumoniae strains from 100 broiler birds. We characterized the strains, determining clonality, virulence and antimicrobial resistance genes using next generation sequencing. The evaluation of antimicrobial susceptibility revealed that all the strains were MDR. Genomic analysis showed that 3/6 strains belonged to ST152, harbouring acquired resistance aminoglycosides [aadA2, aph(4′)-Ia], β-lactams (blaSHV-187, blaLAP2), fosfomycin (fosA6), tetracycline (tetA), trimethoprim (dfrA12), quinolone (qnrS1), sulphonamides (sul2) and phenicol (floR). All the strains harboured the efflux pump genes oqxA, oqxB, emrR, kpnG, kpnH, kpnF, baeR, mtdB and mtdC. All six strains encoded identical virulence profiles possessing six genes, i.e., ureA, iutA, entB, allS, fimH and mrkD. Phylogenomic analysis of the dominant sequence type (ST152) present in our dataset with publicly available genomes showed that the isolates clustered to strains mainly from human sources and could pose a potential threat to food safety and public health. The combination of these findings with antimicrobial use data would allow a better understanding of the selective pressures that may be driving the spread of AMR. This is the first report of MDR K. pneumoniae isolated from broiler hens in Pakistan, and the finding suggests that routine surveillance of WHO critical priority pathogens in such settings would be beneficial to the development of effective control strategies to reduce AMR

    Barcelona ist derzeit eine der spannendsten Referenzen für eine sozialverträgliche und nachhaltige Stadtentwicklungs- und Wohnungsbaupolitik. Diese erfährt international viel Aufmerksamkeit und gilt angesichts der brennenden Frage nach innerstädtischem, bezahlbarem Wohnraum in aktuellen Fachdiskursen als beispielhaft und auf viele andere Orte übertragbar. Dieses hochaktuelle Thema hat das Fachgebiet Städtebau und Entwerfen an der Brandenburgischen Technischen Universität Cottbus-Senftenberg anlässlich der Biennale Manifesta 15 Barcelona Metropolitana mit dem Seminar und der Exkursion Learning from Barcelona aufgegriffen. Masterstudierende der Fachrichtungen Stadt- und Regionalplanung sowie Architektur setzten sich mit vier wichtigen Phasen der Stadtentwicklung in Barcelona auseinander und erarbeiteten zeichnerische und textliche Analysen ausgewählter Wohnungsbauprojekte, die in diesen Zeiten entstanden sind. Ein Schwerpunkt lag dabei auf den Jahren seit 2010 und den aktuell fertiggestellten oder derzeit im Bau befindlichen genossenschaftlichen und sozialen Wohnprojekten.Barcelona is currently one of the most prominent examples of socially responsible and sustainable urban development and housing policies. It has gained international attention and is widely regarded as a model in current professional discourses, particularly in relation to the pressing issue of affordable inner-city housing. Its approach is seen as transferable to many other cities. This highly relevant topic has been addressed by the Chair of Urban Design at Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus-Senftenberg in conjunction with the Manifesta 15 Barcelona Metropolitana Biennial through the seminar and excursion Learning from Barcelona. Master‘s students from the fields of urban and regional planning, as well as architecture, analyzed four key phases of urban development in the city. They produced both graphical and textual analyses of selected housing projects developed during these periods. Particular emphasis was placed on the years since 2010, focusing on cooperative and social housing projects that have been completed or are currently under construction

    Numerical investigation of equilibrium and kinetic aspects for hydrogenation of CO₂

    Even if huge efforts are made to push alternative mobility concepts, such as electric cars and fuel-cell-powered cars, the significance and use of liquid fuels is anticipated to stay high during the 2030s. Biomethane and synthetic natural gas (SNG) might play a major role in this context, as they are raw material for chemical industry that is easy to be stored and distribute via existing infrastructure, and are a versatile energy carrier for power generation and mobile applications. Since biomethane and synthetic natural gas are suitable for power generation and for mobile applications, they can therefore replace natural gas without any infrastructure changes, thus playing a major role. In this paper, we aim to comprehend the direct production of synthetic natural gas from CO₂ and H₂ in a Sabatier process based on a thermodynamic analysis as well as a multi-step kinetic approach. For this purpose, we thoroughly discuss CO₂ methanation to control emissions in order to maximize the methane formation along with minimizing the CO formation and to understand the complex methanation process. We consider an equilibrium and kinetic modeling study on the NiO-SiO₂catalyst for methanation focusing on CO₂-derived SNG. The thermodynamic analysis of CO₂ hydrogenation is preformed to define the optimal process parameters followed by the kinetic simulations for catalyst development. The investigation presented in this paper can also be used for developing machine learning algorithms for methanation processes
