    No full text
This dissertation compiles three research articles that evaluate renewable energy support instruments and estimate the costs of deploying renewable sources at the national level. The research is based on the German experience; however, the findings are relevant to other markets and technologies. The first article examines the German photovoltaic (PV) auction program. Since the main objectives of renewable auctions are project realization and competitive prices, proper evaluation requires estimating realization rates in addition to early indicators such as auctioned capacity and resulting prices. Realization rates were estimated using an innovative approach that merged diverse public databases into a detailed, project-specific dataset. The analysis also considers the impact of developer characteristics on market behaviour and project outcomes, testing hypotheses on the influence of size and experience on bidding strategies and success. Results confirm that the German PV program was effective, with projects largely completed. While auctions helped discover competitive prices, subsidy reductions were mainly driven by falling technology costs. The second article applies the same data-merging algorithm to the German onshore wind auction program. Unlike PV auctions, which emphasized primary objectives, the wind design also sought secondary goals such as actor diversity and regional balance. In addition to realization rates, the study evaluates these goals by examining community energy companies (CECs) and the effect of including a grid expansion area (GEA). Findings show the initial scheme failed to promote wind deployment at competitive prices, while design elements intended to achieve secondary objectives neither met their goals nor prevented larger actors from gaming the system. The third article investigates the broader economic implications of Germany’s support mechanisms, focusing on net subsidies under the Renewable Energy Sources Act. It quantifies the aggregated costs of all RES units installed between 2000 and 2021 and projects future payments. The analysis reveals that despite high historical costs, current and future support is declining due to reduced levelized costs of electricity (LCOEs) and higher wholesale prices. The study highlights the central role of wind and solar in cost-effective deployment and recommends policies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of future renewable investments.

Smart Cargo Station : contribution to the operational and infrastructural design of decentralized access points for rail freight transport with special consideration of container handling at main tracks

Strengthening rail freight transport is desired on a broad basis. It is often unaffordable to provide every commercial or industrial company (again) with its own siding or to set up new public sidings according to the old layout. Intermodal freight transport in its current form is also only a limited alternative to long-distance transport by trucks, because the transhipment between the modes of transport in intermodal terminals is associated with a loss of time and additional costs. Intermodal terminals are rare and the distances to them are often long. Therefore conventional intermodal freight transport is only economically reasonable for large volumes of goods and long transport distances. Freight customers in the small and medium-sized business sector rarely achieve both. Even the regions along the European freight corridors are de facto cut off from intermodal freight transport because the trains do not stop for loading or unloading outside the intermodal terminals. So there is a lack of a concept that allows goods to reach their destination by freight train quickly, safely, without complications and on the shortest route. The idea of the Smart Cargo Station is based on the transfer of basic principles of rail passenger transport to rail freight transport. Transport stations in the vicinity of settlements allow travellers to quickly get on, off and change from one means of transport to another. What is missing is a structural counterpart for freight transport. For this purpose, the Smart Cargo Station is to be developed, which represents an extension of the intermodal freight transport system and is particularly suitable for a decentralised location. Economic efficiency has priority over maximising transhipment performance. Therefore, Smart Cargo Stations in large numbers could add a new component to the existing railway and intermodal freight transport network and open up additional potentials of freight transport for the railways. The standardised design with expandable modules should be integrated into existing railway systems and not require any intervention in existing interlocking technology. The required areas are available in the form of fallow land, created by dismantling station tracks. Suitable horizontal handling technology for containers can avoid the use of expensive crane systems in the Smart Cargo Station and also function with electric railway operation using overhead wires. The core of the work is a novel solution that completely eliminates time-consuming shunting and train formation processes as well as preparatory work such as brake testing. Instead, freight handling is to be made possible during a short stop on a main track, while ensuring constant safety of railway operation. The main track to be used should preferably be an already existing passing track. Containers can quickly board, disembark and transfer in the Smart Cargo Station where other trains are running before and after. Only the short distances to the consignor and consignee are bridged by road

Improving catalysts and operating conditions using machine learning in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis of jet fuels (C8-C16)

    Get PDF
Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) offers a promising route for producing sustainable jet fuels from syngas. However, optimizing catalyst design and operating conditions for the ideal C8-C16 jet fuel range is challenging. Thus, this work introduces a machine learning (ML) framework to enhance Co/Fe-supported FTS catalysts and optimize their operating conditions for a better jet fuel selectivity. For this purpose, a dataset was implemented with 21 features, including catalyst structure, preparation method, activation procedure, and FTS operating parameters. Moreover, various machine-learning models (Random Forest (RF), Gradient Boosted, CatBoost, and artificial neural networks (ANN)) were evaluated to predict CO conversion and C8-C16 selectivity. Among these, the CatBoost model achieved the highest accuracy (R2 = 0.99). Feature analysis revealed that FTS operational conditions mainly affect CO conversion (37.9 %), while catalyst properties were primarily crucial for C8-C16 selectivity (40.6 %). The proposed ML framework provides a first powerful tool for the rational design of FTS catalysts and operating conditions to maximize jet fuel productivity.

    No full text
The work is focused on the further development of chemical sensors based on conducting polymers. The particular objectives include: (i) implementation of a novel concept for chemical sensors based on the electrical control of the affinity of a receptor layer; (ii) development of a new chemosensitive polymer for the detection of glucose and other diol-containing compounds; (iii) the elaboration of the electrochemical deposition of conducting polymers on a non-metallic plasmonic support. The first task involves the exploitation of the redox activity of conducting polymers, whereby each redox state exhibits distinct affinity properties. This principle was realized on the base of integrated electrochemical transistor comprising a conducting polymer as a receptor layer deposited onto four measurement electrodes, which were wired to the Ag/AgCl electrode through a chloride-containing ionic liquid. This additional electrode was used to control the redox state of the conducting polymer. It was demonstrated that the sensor exhibited an electrically switchable affinity to trimethylamine. This approach was applied to develop a novel chemosensing concept: a virtual sensor array comprising only a single chemosensitive element. The concept was applied in the development of a chemical sensor for the analysis of fish freshness. The second task is concerned with the electrochemical synthesis and analysis of the analytical properties of a novel chemosensitive material, poly-3-thienylboronic acid. This polymer can be synthesized as a film on the surface, as a free-standing polymer film or as polymeric nanoparticles. The presence of the boronic acid group makes it sensitive to saccharides and other compounds containing diols. The use of an adhesive self-assembled monolayer resulted in the formation of highly stable, thin polymer films on the gold electrodes. The formed polymer exhibited conductive properties, while the binding of compounds containing diols resulted in a significant increase in resistance. The affinity of this novel material to a range of different compounds was studied at varying pH and electrode potentials and compared to the affinity of its monomer. It was demonstrated that poly-3-thienylboronic acid has a high affinity for glucose. The measurements performed in a solution containing the main component of human serum indicate that this sensor may have potential applications in the medical field. The third task includes the electrochemical deposition of various conducting polymers, including poly-3-thienylboronic acid, on the surface of titanium nitride and plasmonic nanohole structures based on this material. The modes of the electrochemical polymer deposition and polymer pretreatment required for the electrochemical deposition and analysis were optimized. The research results are important for developing affinity sensors that utilize conducting polymers as chemosensitive receptor layers.

City centers are under pressure to act. The decline in retail trade, increasing vacancies, changing social demands as well as challenges posed by climate change, demographic developments and new mobility needs make a fundamental reorientation necessary. Small and medium-sized towns in Brandenburg in particular are faced with the task of making their centers fit for the future. As part of the bachelor's seminar Urban Management - Transformation of the City Center, students of architecture and urban planning dealt with selected case studies of Brandenburg cities. The aim was to analyze existing structures, actor constellations and development potential as well as to develop spatial and conceptual strategies to strengthen resilience and diversity of use in the centers. Expert presentations from municipal practice and insights into model projects from the federal program “Sustainable inner cities and centers” provided valuable impetus. The concepts developed focus on consumer-free qualities of stay, dealing with vacancies, activating open spaces and promoting socio-spatial cooperation. The results show how integrated, participative and experimental approaches can be used to develop long-term perspectives for city centers

You are what you eat : metabolic recycling of phagocytosed bacteria modulates macrophage immunity

    No full text
In a recent study show that phagocytosed bacteria can be recycled by macrophages to serve as an alternative nutrient source. Bacterial cAMP was identified as a signal for macrophages to differentiate between dead and live bacteria and to adjust the inflammatory response accordingly. You are what you eat - at least when it comes to macrophages. Macrophages have a high capacity to take up fluid, macromolecules, apoptotic cells, and microorganisms from the extracellular space. Uptake of macromolecules by macropinocytosis and subsequent degradation in lysosomes in an infectious or autoimmune setting can lead to excessive inflammation. It is also known that engulfment of apoptotic cells and digestion in phagolysosomes by the macrophages generates amino acids, nucleotides, and fatty acids that then act as metabolites and signalling molecules in the macrophages and influence their cellular functions. Up until now, it was largely believed that phagolysosomes containing engulfed microorganisms are tightly sealed vesicles, so that potentially harmful components from the foreign organisms aren’t diffused in the cell. Lesbats et al. show here for the first time that macrophages recycle engulfed bacteria and use the components as nutrient source
