    DEGRADATION OF SOME POLYSTRENE USING BEETLE LARVAE (TENEBRIO MOLITOR L.)

    One alternative to waste processing polystyrene is to use Tenebrio molitor larvae. This study aims to determine the increase in body length and weight, rate of degradation, and value of Waste Reduction Index (WRI) of larvae T. molitor. This study used laboratory experimental using completely randomized design experimental design model (CRD) data analysis with control and 4 feed treatments. Each treatment level was repeated 5 times in order to obtain 25 experimental units. Larvae were reared in a plastic container containing 10 larvae. Each larvae were given bran feed for control and polystrene for treatment, each feed as much as 1 gram. The polystyrene used were food packaging, walls, electronic packaging, and ice boxes. Larvae were measured for length and body weight every 3 days for 30 days. Parameters observed were increase in length and weight of larvae, rate of degradation and WRI values.The highest mean value of increase in larval length on the polystrene wall was 1.69 cm. The lowest value was polystyrene food packaging (1.59 cm). The average weight gain of larvae has a uniform value in the control and treatment of 0.07 gr. The highest degradation rate and WRI values were polystyrene wall and electronic packaging at 0.019 and 0.63%. while the lowest values were polystyrene food packaging at 0.11 and 0.37%

    GLANDULAR TRICHOME IN THE ASTERACEAE FAMILY

    The Asteraceae is a diverse plant species and widely distributed, especially in the tropics and subtropics, consisting of 1,600 - 1,700 genera which include 24,000 - 30,000  species. Asteraceae has characteristics of cup flowers and brackets that are not owned by other plants. The objective of this study was to determine the morphological structure of plants and escpecially the leaf glandular trichome in several species of Asteraceae. The research method used was a descriptive method, to describe and interpret the shape, structure and distribution of leaf trichome in the Asteraceae family. This study used eight species of the Asteraceae family, namely Elephantopus mollis, Bidens pilosa, Tithonia deversifolia, Tridax procumbens, Synedrella nodiflora, Eclipta prostrate, Sphagneticola trilobata and Ageratum conyzoides. The observation results of trichomes at 8 species by Scanning Electrone Microscope (SEM) was obtained varied forms of trichomes, both in shape and size. From the research, it was obtained that the forms of multicellular glandular trichome with various shapes, ranging in size from 50.6 µm - 831.9 µm.   Â

    VEGETATION COMPOSITION ON ECOLOGICAL FUNCTION IN MATARAM MERAH PARK, JAKARTA

    The existence of the city park is important for Jakarta as a metropolitan city with the current activity level of motor vehicles and air pollution greatly affects the quality of the city environment. The selection of vegetation in Mataram Merah park considered functional aspects and aesthetic values . The objective of this study were to determine the composition and type of vegetation landscape in Mataram Merah park and to determine the function of each type of landscape vegetation in Mataram Merah park. This study used a descriptive qualitative method with several stages, which is survey; identification of the name and type of vegetation; size identification; identification of the type of vegetation making up the composition (name of type and size that makes up the vegetation structure). The results showed that Mataram Merah park was generally planted with vegetation that functioned aesthetically rather than functionally. The function of landscape plants in Mataram Merah park were as aesthetics is 96.55%, as controlling view as much as 13.80%, vegetation function as physical barrier as much as 62.07%, plants as controlling erosion 51.72%, function of plants as controlling climate 13.79% and vegetation function for wildlife as much as 17.24%

    THE POTENTIAL OF NGOKILO LEAVES EXTRACT (STACHYTARPHETA MUTABILIS. VAHL) AS A LOWERING OF BLOOD GLUCOSE LEVELS OF WHITE MICE (RATTUS NORVEGICUS)

    Diabetes is a disease, in which the body cannot produce enough insulin so that there is excess sugar in the blood which becomes toxic to the body. Ngokilo plants are believed to be able to lower blood sugar levels because of the antioxidants and polyphenols contained therein.The objective of this study was to determine the potential of the ethanol extract of Ngokilo leaves (Stachytarpheta mutabilis, Vahl) as a lowering blood glucose levels in white mice(Rattus norvegicus). The tests were carried out by an experimental method using Swiss Webster male mice (Rattus norvegicus) aged 2-3 months with a body west of 30-40 grams as test animals. This study used four dosage ratios of ngokilo leaf extract, namely 1: 20: 40: 60 and control used aquadest. The results showed that the ethanol extract of Ngokilo leaves had an F value of 27.033> F Table 2.60. It indicates that the independent variable (the difference in the concentration of ethanol extract of Ngokilo leaves) was proven to have a significant effect on the dependent variable (blood sugar levels)

    Cockroaches (Periplaneta americana) are known to have potential as vectors of various pathogenic bacteria in various locations including the nutrition department area in the hospitals. Research related to the role of these animals as vectors of pathogenic bacteria has not been done. The provision of food in the hospital nutrition department has the potential for bacterial contamination from food, equipment, hospital staff, and the environment. Cockroaches can be a vector for spreading various nosocomial infectious diseases in hospitals. A descriptive method was used, and the data were obtained by bacterial isolation, Gram staining method, antibiotic sensitivity test, and bacterial identification using Microbact system software 2000. This study was carried out at the Biology Education Laboratory, Education and Teacher Training Faculty,  Tadulako University. Based on the results of the study, 6 species of bacterial isolates from cockroach feet   in the nutrition department area of Palu city hospital, namely E. coli, S. arizonae, Salmonella sp., K. ozaenae, S. simulans, and S. enterica. Antibiotic sensitivity test showed that four bacteria exhibited multi-drug resistance to antibiotics Amoxycillin, Chloramphenicol and Vancomycin. Meanwhile,S. enterica was still sensitive to the five tested antibiotics namely Amoxycillin, Chloramphenicol, Ciprofloxacin, Ofloxacin, and Vancomycin. serious policies and handling are needed to control new types of vectors that carry diseases in humans.. meanwhile,S. entericawas still sensitive to the five tested antibiotics

    EVALUATION ON METHODS FOR IDENTIFICATION OF VIBRIO SP.: KAWAKAWA (EUTHYNNUS AFFINIS) BRINING SHREDDED AND CHITOSAN ADDITION AS PRESERVATIVE

    The kawakawa (Euthynnus affinis) brine salting that used to make shredded were preservative with salt. Salt addition has aim to inactivate of bacterial contamination. Obviously, bacteria is still capable of growing in kawakawa brine shredding Therefore, in this study chitosan was added as antibacterial in shredded processing. Vibrio sp., is one of common halophilic bacteria found in seafood. If this bacteria is consumed, it can cause serious problems in human health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the factors that affect in identifying Vibrio sp., on kawakawa brine shredding (C), shredded non-chitosan (FC) and shredded contain of chitosan (FC+). The methods evaluated were steps in enriching bacteria, culturing bacterial in selective media and analysing bacterial by API 20E kit. Enriching and incubation periods were needed by halophilic bacteria to adaptation in new environment. It was required to observe the bacteria characteristics' that would be isolated. Bacterial colonies were growth on Thiosulphate citrate bile salt sucrose (TCBS)  were not Vibrio sp., but confirmed as Pseudomonas luteola and Proteus vulgaris based on API 20E analysis. It was showed that TCBS media had some advantages in identifying Vibrio sp. In conclusion, to get the best result in identifying bacteria, at least two  or more methods were used to avoid misidentification

    EFFECTIVENESS TEST OF BLACK CUMIN SEEDS (NIGELLA SATIVA) EXTRACT ON THE GROWTH OF KLEBSIELLA PNEUMONIAE AND PSEUDOMONAS AERUGINOSA BACTERIA

    Black cumin seeds are known to have beneficial contents as antibacterial. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of black cumin seed extract (Nigella sativa) on the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The method used was the disc diffusion method. The ethanol extract of black cumin seeds gain by maceration method and was made into various concentration (5, 7.5, 10, 12.5, and 15)%. For positive control, ciprofloxacin disc were used and negative control used distilled water. The research model used was in vitro experimental research. The results showed that ethanol extract of black cumin seeds have antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae with inhibition zone diameters (4.5, 6.7, 10.1, 11, 12.8) mm, Pseudomonas aeruginosa with inhibition zone diameters (7.5, 12, 12.6, 13.4, 15.6) mm, positive controls respectively (24.3 and 20.7) mm and negative controls (0). It can be concluded that black cumin seed extract has an inhibiting effect on the growth of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    PROFILE OF PULMONARY AND EXTRA PULMONARY TUBERCULOSIS USE GENEXPER AT THE PIRNGADI HOSPITAL MEDAN

    Mycobacterium tuberculosis as the bacteria that causes TB disease where the healing process takes a long time, using boredom and drug blockages in TB sufferers. This is one reason germs become resistant to several types of anti-tuberculosis drugs known as TB Multi Drug Resistance (MDR TB). The molecular rapid test (TCM) method using GenExper can quickly determine ATD resistance. This study aims to see the results of TCM examination using GenExper in patients with pulmonary tuberculosis and extra pulmonary tuberculosis at dr. Pirngadi Medan. This study used a cross-sectional method by taking laboratory data from the GenExper examination contained in the medical records of patients diagnosed with tuberculosis at Pirngadi Hospital, Medan. Samples obtained from patients using GenExper from January to December 2018 obtained 354 patients with 68.1% more TB incidence in male patients (241/354) than women by 31.9% (113/354). The patients most affected by TB were elderly people aged 56-65 years with a proportion of 23.7%. The largest population affected by TB is self-employed 30.5% and the highest level of education diagnosed is high school graduates 60.5%. Most patients suffered from pulmonary TB at 86.4%

    ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF IAA-PRODUCING RIZOSPHERE BACTERIA FROM RICE PLANTS (ORYZA SATIVA L.) IN KEDUNGPANI URBAN VILLAGE, SEMARANG CITY

    Rhizosphere bacteria live in the soil around plant roots. Various rhizosphere bacteria are able to produce the hormone Indole-3-Acetic Acid (IAA) which stimulates plant growth. This study aims to isolate and characterize IAA-producing rhizosphere bacteria in rice plants in the rice fields of Kedungpani urban village, Semarang city. Bacterial enumeration was carried out using the total plate count (TPC) method. The isolates obtained were characterized by observation of colony and cell morphology, gram staining, endospore staining, catalase test, and sugar fermentation test. The ability to produce the IAA hormone was tested using Salkowski's reagent. The enumeration results showed that the total bacteria in the sample was 2.9 x 105 CFU / g. A total of 10 isolates were obtained and were able to produce the IAA hormone with various concentrations. Isolates KP1, KP2, KP3, KP4, KP5, KP6, KP9, KP13, KP14, and KP15 produced IAA with concentrations of 3.389, 5.111, 3.000, 1.667, 1.944, 5.056, 5.444, 4.500, 5.056, and 10.833 ppm, respectively. The results showed that there were 5 isolates with the highest IAA concentrations, namely KP2, KP6, KP9, KP14, and KP15 which had the potential to be used as biostimulant agents for plants

    DIVERSITY OF FERNS (PTERIDOPHYTA) IN THE SEVERAL MOUNTAINS OF WEST JAVA

    The diversity of ferns (Pteridophyta) in the five mountainous in West Java (Mt. of Patuha, Papandayan, Tangkuban Perahu, Pangrango, and Guntur) has not been widely reported. The aim of this research was to obtain data on diversity and similarity of fern species in the five mountains in West Java. This research was conducted by exploring and descriptive analysis method. Comparison of species diversity among all reseach field were calculated by the index of species similarity according to Sorenson. The diversity of ferns in Mt. Patuha, Papandayan, Tangkuban Perahu, Pangrango, and Guntur were 27, 14, 26, 40 and 5 species, respectively. The total number of ferns species in five locations are 83 species from 25 families. Comparison of species diversity among fileds based on the Sorenson similarity index is low (<50%), except between the Mt. Patuha and Mt. Papandayan areas is high (> 50%)
