Changing Effects of Spouse Presence in Interviews. A Secondary Analysis Based on ALLBUS Data from 1980 to 1998
No full textIn sozialwissenschaftlichen Datenerhebungsinterviews ist neben Interviewer und Befragtem nicht selten der Ehepartner der befragten Person anwesend, dessen Anwesenheit vor allem eine Beeinflussung partnerschaftsbezogener Fragestellungen nachgesagt wird. Der Beitrag untersucht auf der Basis von ALLBUS Daten der Jahre 1980 bis 1998 die Entwicklung möglicher Ursachen der Partneranwesenheit sowie deren Auswirkung auf eine Frage nach der Aufteilung der beruflichen Karriere in der Partnerschaft. Es zeigt sich, dass im untersuchten Zeitraum keine durchgängigen Ursachen und keine eindeutige Entwicklung der Bedingungen der Anwesenheit des Partners festzustellen sind. Sowohl die Partneranwesenheit als auch einige Selektionsvariablen haben jedoch 1996 gegenüber 1982 an Erklärungskraft für die Beantwortung der partnerschaftsbezogenen Karrierefrage gewonnen. Der Beitrag kommt zu dem Schluss, dass traditionelle Geschlechtsrollenzuweisungen ihre Selbstverständlichkeit und Allgemeingültigkeit verloren haben und die Auswirkung der Anwesenheit des Partners im Interview somit im Kontext der Zugehörigkeit zu bestimmten Partnerschaftsmilieus gesehen werde muss. Partneranwesenheit in Befragungen wird damit vom reinen Methodenproblem zu einem inhaltlich relevanten Aspekt der Forschung zum Wandel von Ehe und Partnerschaft.Data collecting interviews in the social sciences often take place in the presence of the interviewed person's spouse. This situation is sometimes said to produce responsive effects, especially in regard to questions concerning the marital partnership. On the basis of the data from the German National Social Survey ALLBUS (1980 to 1998) reasons for the presence of a spouse during an interview are examined, as are its consequences for responses to questions concerning the role of the one partner in support of the other partner's career. The findings reveal that there is no continuos stable correlate over the years to the presence of spouse. Also, there is no clear-cut development in this regard. On the other hand, the effects of the presence of a spouse as well as the effects of some of the selection variables that can explain the spouse's presence have increased with respect to the career support question. The major finding of this article is that traditional gender roles have lost their substance and that the consequences of the presence of a spouse during an inteview can be understood only in the context of the societal environment of partnership. Spouse presence changes its meaning from a mere methodological bias to a relevant aspect of research about the development of marriage and partnership

No full textInglehart (1997) überprüft in multivariaten Regressionsanalysen den Einfluss von Leistungsbedürfnis und Postmaterialismus 1990 auf das Wirtschaftswachstum in der Periode 1960-1989 und vergleicht die Effekte mit denen ökonomischer Einflussfaktoren. Er stellt einen signifikanten positiven Effekt des Leistungsbedürfnisses fest. Ingleharts Ergebnis ist jedoch fragwürdig, da er die Ursachen (Leistungsbedürfnis und Postmaterialismus) nach der Wirkung (Wirtschaftswachstum) misst. In dieser Replikationsstudie wird eine spätere Beobachtungsperiode für die abhängige Variable zusammen mit den ursprünglichen Werte-Variablen verwendet. Ein einflussreicher und mitMessproblemen behafteter Fall wird mal berücksichtigt und mal eliminiert. In dieser Studie kann kein robuster Effekt von Leistungsbedürfnis oder Postmaterialismus auf dasWirtschaftswachstum festgestellt werden.Ronald Inglehart (1997) examines the impact on economic growth in the period 1960-1989 of the need for achievement and postmaterialism in 1990 by multiple regression analysis and compares the results of those of a standard econometric model. He finds a significant and positive effect of need for achievement. Inglehart's results are questionable, however, because he records the causes (need for achievement and postmaterialism) after the effect (economic growth). In this replication study a later period of observation for the dependent variable is used together with the originial values measured. Moreover, an influental case which suffers from measurement problems is included in one regression and eliminated in another. In this study no robust effect of either need for achievement or postmaterialism on economic growth can be found
Political Institutions in Societal Change. Naturalization Procedures: Between Immigrant Expectations and Institutional Specifications in Present-Day Germany
No full textDieser Beitrag nutzt institutionentheoretische Konzepte, um Veränderungen der politischen Inkorporation zu rekonstruieren. Am Beispiel der Reformen der Einbürgerungsbestimmungen in der Bundesrepublik Deutschland wird die Re-Institutionalisierung der Staatsbürgerschaft dargestellt: Auf der Seite der staatlichen Vorgabe werden diese Prozesse anhand der Reform des Staatsangehörigkeitsrechts, auf der Seite der Migranten mit Hilfe eines Datensatzes aus dem Sozio-Oekonomischen Panel (SOEP) untersucht. Vor diesem Hintergrund wird die Perspektive des Wandels der Staatsbürgerschaft in einem weltgesellschaftlichen Rahmen kontextualisiert. Die These ist, dass globale Struktureffekte zu einer Dekomposition nationaler Institutionen beitragen.This paper benefits from institutionalist concepts in order to reconstruct changes in political incorporation. The reinstituitionalization of citizenship will be considererd with reference to the reform of German naturalization procedures. On th institutional side (the state) we discuss the reform of naturalization law; on the immigrant side we use panel-data to discuss expectations. Against this background changing concepts of citizenship will be contextualized in a global frame of reference. It will be argued that global structural effects are contributing to a decomposition of national institutions
