Lawful kinematics link eye movements to the limits of high-speed perception
The article processing charge was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.Perception requires active sampling of the environment. What part of the physical world can be perceived is limited by the sensory system’s biophysical setup, but might be further constrained by the kinematic bounds of the motor actions used to acquire sensory information. Here, we tested this fundamental idea for humans’ fastest and most frequent behavior—saccadic eye movements—which entail incidental sensory consequences (i.e., swift retinal motion) that rarely reach awareness in natural vision. Using high-speed video projection, we display rapidly moving stimuli that faithfully reproduce, or deviate from, saccades’ lawful relation of velocity, duration, and amplitude. For each stimulus, observers perform perceptual tasks for which performance is contingent on consciously seeing the stimulus’ motion trajectory. We uncover that visibility of the stimulus’ movement is well predicted by the specific kinematics of saccades and their sensorimotor contingencies, reflecting even variability between individual observers. Computational modeling shows that spatiotemporal integration during early visual processing predicts this lawful relation in a tight range of biologically plausible parameters. These results suggest that the visual system takes into account motor kinematics when omitting an action’s incidental sensory consequences, thereby preserving visual sensitivity to high-speed object motion.Peer Reviewe
Connecting needs to implications in sustainable carbon dioxide removal scenario assessments
In light of insufficient global efforts to cut greenhouse gas emissions to limit global warming in line with the Paris Agreement, the concept of anthropogenic carbon dioxide removal (CDR) is gaining attention among scientists and policymakers. While cutting gross emissions rapidly and deeply is of utmost importance to limit global warming as much as possible, CDR has been identified as a necessary complementary climate change mitigation strategy. However, the amount of CDR required varies considerably across mitigation scenarios in the academic literature, which sparks high hopes for future CDR capacities but also gives rise to uncertainty concerning the required level of CDR. To date, real world deployment of various CDR options remains largely unproven at scale, and serious concerns regarding its sustainability implications have been raised. This dissertation aims to make two main contributions to the scientific discussion of CDR's role in climate change mitigation. First, it explores the deployment of CDR across modelled mitigation pathways, helping to identify preferred pathways in the assessed solution space and the necessary steps to limit the reliance on CDR. Secondly, this dissertation explores positive and negative side effects of CDR at scale. To do so, the currently available scientific evidence on CDR implications is systematically mapped, resulting in an inventory and taxonomy of almost 400 side effects. Building on this systematic overview, two thematic deep dives are carried out, looking at biodiversity implications across scenarios – a key concern identified in the literature. Taken together, this dissertation contributes to connecting the need for CDR deployment, as observed in scenarios, to its potential sustainability implications that need to be accounted for

This chapter examines why non-heteronormative forms of desire remain largely invisible in narratives about and by migrants in Germany. Using the example of Indian nurses and their families, the author shows that queer or non-heteronormative desires do exist, but are systematically concealed behind a heteronormative façade. The author discusses theoretical reasons for this invisibility – including normative expectations, cultural taboos and epistemic boundaries – as well as methodological challenges in accessing such hidden forms of desire in academic research. The epistemological considerations emphasise the need for a research approach that is both sensitive and sceptical in order to make marginalised forms of intimacy visible without appropriating or endangering them again.Peer Reviewe

Formation, Phase Transition, Surface, and Catalytic Properties of Cubic ZrO2 Nanocrystals
ZrO2 is a relevant industrial and technological material with structure-dependent properties. The high-temperature tetragonal and cubic phases can be stabilized at room temperature through the incorporation of stabilizing cations. Tetragonal pure ZrO2 can additionally be stabilized by reducing the crystallite size to the nanoscale; however, stabilizing cubic pure ZrO2 at room temperature remains challenging. Here, cubic ZrO2 nanocrystals are synthesized by reacting a low concentration of ZrCl4 (0.025 mol L–1) with acetophenone. Pair distribution function and extended X-ray absorption fine structure analyses reveal that the local structure around the zirconium atoms is highly distorted relative to that of the ideal cubic. The structure can be modified by increasing the precursor concentration (up to 0.1 mol L–1), eventually leading to the formation of entirely monoclinic nanocrystals. The surface properties and catalytic behavior of cubic ZrO2 are investigated for establishing structure–property correlations and comparisons with the monoclinic phase. An optimized combination of activity, product yields, and recyclability in the multistep conversion of α-angelica lactone to γ-valerolactone is achieved with small cubic ZrO2 particles of 2.3 ± 0.4 nm size. Our results provide insights into the stabilization of cubic ZrO2 and phase transitions at room temperature and demonstrate the potential of cubic-type pure ZrO2 for catalytic applications.Funda??o para a Ci?ncia e a Tecnologia 10.13039/501100001871Funda??o para a Ci?ncia e a Tecnologia 10.13039/501100001871Funda??o para a Ci?ncia e a Tecnologia 10.13039/501100001871China Scholarship Council 10.13039/501100004543Peer Reviewe
Investigation of Sigma Models with Lattice Discretization
In this thesis, we investigate sigma models on supersymmetric target spaces from a lattice field theory perspective, as an alternative approach to analyze non-perturbative aspects of such a relevant class of field theories. Particular emphasis is on the significance of non-linear sigma models in the AdS/CFT correspondence and their properties in a discretized worldsheet. The work primarily focuses on two models. The first model is the OSp(N+2m|2m)-invariant non-linear sigma model. This model is an extension of the two-dimensional O(N)-invariant non-linear sigma models to a supersymmetric target manifold, identified by the coset OSp(N+2m|2m)/OSp(N+2m-1|2m). We describe the model, its renormalization properties in the continuum and on the lattice, and the relation between the n-point correlators of these models and those of the O(N) non-linear sigma model. We then present a strategy for numerical simulations of the non-linear sigma model on the supersphere, show some preliminary results that validate the analytical results, and compare them with existing literature. The second model investigated is the gauge-fixed Green-Schwarz superstring on a null cusp background. For this model, we propose a discretized action that fully preserves its global U(1)xSU(4) symmetry, discuss its one-loop renormalizability, and recover some continuum perturbative results
