Co-evolution of business environments and grassland innovations in the Bioeconomy

    No full text
The bioeconomy proposes an economic model based on renewable biological resources, converting them into value-added products. This model supports the transition from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy. Grasslands are a key resource, covering over a third of Europe's agricultural area. Traditionally used in livestock production, much of the grassland biomass remains underutilized. In recent years, new valorization pathways have emerged for grassland biomass, such as paper, insulation, and biochar. However, integrating grassland innovations into existing industries remains challenging, with alternative grass-based products having minimal impact on Europe's economy. This dissertation explores the relationship between businesses and their environments. It investigates the external factors influencing the development of eighteen grass-based businesses in Europe. Using Germany as a case study, it examines the effects of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) on land-use changes related to grasslands from 1990-2019. It also evaluates the innovation readiness of eight nascent grass-based innovations. The findings highlight the potential of grass-based businesses for rural development, regional socio-economic growth, and European industrial sustainability. However, high production costs and limited consumer and policy awareness hinder market growth. Raising awareness and optimizing regulatory processes can help integrate these products into European markets

This article introduces the concept of »parasitism« to eighteenth-century Nordic literature and argues for the parasitic nature of paratexts in the novel. Drawing on the ancient Greek term parasitos and the theories of Michel Serres and Mikhail Bakhtin, the article shows how the novelistic prose disrupts and revitalizes canonized genre systems: By inserting extraliterary languages (e.g. epistolary) into the novelistic, these are re-contextualized, drawing attention to the medium and the narrativity of literature. C. A. Thielo’s Charlotte eller forunderlige Tildragelser med Frøken Weisensøe und Eiríkur Laxdal’s Ólandssaga are chosen to illustrate the extent to which the concept of parasitism can be useful to describe the transformations in eighteenth-century Nordic literature

Gene expression regulation encompasses diverse pathways linking genotype and phenotype. RNA plays a central role, with its synthesis and decay dynamically shaping transcript function and half-life. High-throughput RNA-sequencing has revolutionized our understanding of cellular physiology, yet traditional cellular models fail to capture the complexity of mammalian tissues. Ex vivo organotypic cultures (EVOC) better reflect tissue physiology, but their use in gene expression studies remains limited. This thesis addresses this gap through two projects. First, we developed ex vivo SLAM-seq, integrating EVOC with high-throughput sequencing to quantify nascent RNAs in tissue slices. We demonstrated that adult mouse brain slices incorporate 4sU into new RNA, enabling the identification of neuronal activation genes. Additionally, we adapted this method for spatial transcriptomics (ST), facilitating the combined analysis of expression dynamics and tissue architecture. Ex vivo SLAM-seq was also applied to primary colorectal cancers and mouse embryos. The second project explored nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) in the mouse brain, a key regulatory mechanism lacking suitable mammalian models. Using EVOC, we inhibited NMD ex vivo and performed RNA-seq, identifying potential NMD targets and its possible coupling with alternative splicing. ST of adult brain slices suggested region-specific NMD regulation, particularly in the hippocampus. In summary, this thesis highlights EVOC as a powerful platform for studying gene expression dynamics, providing novel opportunities to investigate RNA regulation in complex tissues

Does Digital Village Construction Affect the Sustainable Intensification of Cultivated Land Use? Evidence from Rural China

    No full text
Digital village construction (DVC) is a crucial pathway for increasing farmland productivity, reducing agricultural waste, and ultimately achieving sustainable development goals (SDGs). However, its effects on the sustainable intensification of cultivated land use (SICLU) remain unclear. To bridge this gap, this study investigated the impact effects and mechanisms of DVC on SICLU across 358 counties in China using ordinary least squares and mediating effect models. The results showed the following: (1) DVC and its four sub-indices had significant and positive impacts on SICLU, which were validated through a series of robustness tests. (2) Heterogeneity analysis showed that DVC significantly improved SICLU in the eastern and central regions, as well as in regions with abundant and relatively scarce resource endowments, whereas no such effect was observed in the western region. (3) The relationship between DVC and SICLU was mediated by farmers’ income, technological innovation, and agricultural informatization. These insights highlight the importance of accelerating DVC to enhance SICLU.This work was supported by the Key Project of Jiangsu Social Science Foundation (Grant No. 22GLA004), the Ministry of Education of Humanities and Social Science project (Grant No. 24YJC630102), the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities (Grant No. B240207085), and the ‘111 Center’ (Grant No. B17024).Jiangsu Social Science FoundationMinistry of Education of Humanities and Social ScienceFundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities111 CenterPeer Reviewe

Extremal Lagrangian tori in toric domains

The symplectic area of a Lagrangian submanifold of a symplectic manifold is defined as the minimal positive symplectic area of a smooth 2-disk with boundary on the Lagrangian submanifold. An extremal Lagrangian torus is a Lagrangian torus that maximizes the symplectic area among all the Lagrangian tori. We prove that every extremal Lagrangian torus in the standard symplectic unit ball is contained entirely in the boundary of the ball. This answers a question attributed to Lazzarini and completely settles a conjecture of Cieliebak and Mohnke in the affirmative. In addition, we prove the conjecture for a class of toric domains in the standard symplectic Euclidean space, which includes all compact strictly convex four-dimensional toric domains. We also give counterexamples to explain that the general conjecture does not hold for non-convex domains. In the second part of the thesis, we apply the same methods to the stabilized symplectic embedding problem for ellipsoids. We reformulate this problem as a classification question for certain monotone Lagrangian tori in complex projective spaces. This reformulation has two main advantages. First, it allows the use of algebraic techniques developed for the study of monotone tori to address symplectic embedding problems. Second, one obtains sharp obstructions to symplectic embeddings by using holomorphic curves of lower degree

Attempting to detect a lie: do we think it through?

Game-theoretic analyses of communication rely on beliefs—especially, the receiver’s belief about the truth status of an utterance and the sender’s belief about the reaction to the utterance—but research that provides measurements of such beliefs is still in its infancy. Our experiment examines the use of second-order beliefs, measuring belief hierarchies regarding a message that may be a lie. In a two-player communication game between a sender and a receiver, the sender knows the state of the world and has a transparent incentive to deceive the receiver. The receiver chooses a binary reaction. For a wide set of non-equilibrium beliefs, the reaction and the receiver’s second-order belief should dissonate: she should follow the sender’s statement if and only if she believes that the sender believes that she does not follow the statement. The opposite is true empirically, constituting a new pattern of inconsistency between actions and beliefs.Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.Einstein Stiftung Berlinhttp://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100006188Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DE)Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (1034)Peer Reviewe

The Swedish lynx and wolverine protection policies

The article processing charge was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.1. Conservation performance payments are becoming an increasingly popular instrument to tackle human–wildlife conflicts. In Sweden, Sámi communities practicing reindeer husbandry receive performance payments as compensation for reindeer losses caused by lynxes and wolverines. This study examines the challenges and conflicts associated with the Conservation Performance payment scheme and aims to understand its effectiveness. 2. We carried out a thematic analysis of challenges and conflicts using semi-structured interviews with stakeholders associated with the payment scheme as the main source of evidence, supported by literature identified in a systematic review. 3. The results reveal a wicked conflict setting with a broad range of direct and indirect conflicts. Direct conflicts revolve around the following themes: (1) Uncertainty and mistrust regarding the annual number of lynx and wolverine family groups and the extent of reindeer losses caused by these predators; (2) Payments being too small to cover losses; (3) Large numbers of reindeer lost to predators in many communities and the related hunting regulations. Indirect conflicts are linked to cumulative effects, such as the negative effects of forestry and mining projects on reindeer husbandry, a lack of comprehensive environmental policies, and the perceived lack of respect for reindeer herding as a culturally significant livelihood. 4. We argue that conflicts regarding uncertainties in predator and reindeer loss numbers in particular rather mask broader underlying conflicts. 5. Policy implications: We suggest that high predator-caused reindeer losses in combination with indirect conflicts hampers the successful implementation of the program. Nevertheless, all interviewees appreciated the basic design of the program and its potential. However, realizing this potential requires acknowledging the wickedness of human–wildlife conflicts and adequately addressing long-standing ecological and socio-cultural root conflicts by developing comprehensive, cross-sectoral, and inclusive conservation policies.Peer Reviewe
