Enhancing Ontology Matching: Lexically and Syntactically Standardizing Ontologies Through Customized Lexical Analyzers

    No full text
The article processing charge was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.Ontology matching approaches commonly leverage similarity metrics to establish mappings between entities in the ontologies participating in the process. However, the lack of standardized entity names across these ontologies can cause such metrics to overlook correct mappings. Generally, existing approaches that focus on standardizing entity names neglect the ongoing matching process, leading to inaccurate results, and fail to address the syntactic standardization of entity names. To address these issues, we introduce a novel process that standardizes entity names both lexically and syntactically through a customized lexical analyzer tailored to the ontologies participating in the process. We evaluate this process efficacy using Alin and AML , ontology matching systems, along with the Anatomy and Conference tracks of OAEI, demonstrating an improvement in matching results.Peer Reviewe

Economic Knowledge and Political Economy 1945-1990

The dissertation consists of four articles that examine different facets of the Italian tax system between the end of the Second World War and the end of the First Republic in the 1990s. The central question is how Italy became a modern tax state between the 1950s and 1980s, with tax revenues reaching over 40 per cent of GDP. Why were the 1960s decisive? What economic ideas shaped the introduction of the modern income tax, how did the tax increase become politically feasible - and why income tax instead of VAT? The first article (Jahrbuch für Wirtschaftsgeschichte, 2021) shows the situation of the tax system after 1945 and the limited capacity for reform of the Christian Democrats, whose policies were weakened by a lack of support inside and outside the party and the dominance of neoclassical economics. The second chapter examines the influence of Anglo-American New Public Finance and the break with orthodox Italian finance. Cesare Cosciani drafted an income tax reform in 1963 based on Keynesian principles, but its implementation spared capital income, which was taxed under a separate milder regime. The third chapter analyses the redistribution of the tax burden through the reform of 1972/73, with which the DC shifted the tax burden to competitor political groups and favoured loyal voters. The fourth chapter explains why VAT was introduced less for fiscal reasons than for reasons of EEC integration, although the old turnover tax was more efficient. The conclusion interprets taxation as a central component of the fiscal contract that stabilised the DC in the 1970s and 1980s: taxes financed economic and social modernisation and compensated economically disadvantaged regions - the basis of Christian Democracy's power

A posteriori nonconforming finite element error analysis for fourth-order problems with quadratic semilinearity

A generic existence result of regular roots to nonlinear problems with in general multiple solutions motivates their study for a class of semilinear problems with quadratic nonlinearity. The key to a general a posteriori error analysis of an abstract nonconforming scheme for the approximation of regular roots is a quasi-optimal smoother that maps discrete test functions in the source term and in the quadratic nonlinearity to smooth functions. This thesis focuses on semilinear fourth-order problems where nonconforming elements offer an affordable and powerful alternative to conforming discretisations which require more complicated C¹ conforming finite elements. The abstract theory applies simultaneously to five nonconforming lowest-order finite element schemes. This enables a unified reliable and efficient a posteriori error control for the biharmonic problem, the stream-function vorticity formulation of 2D Navier-Stokes, and the von Kármán equations for a general class of sources. The analysis of an adaptive algorithm based on novel reliable and efficient error estimators reveals the first optimal convergence result for an adaptive Morley approximation of a regular root to the Navier-Stokes equations. So far, the existence of a regular root in the vicinity of the computed approximation is a standard and often unverified assumption in the numerical analysis. In this thesis, the first guaranteed lower bounds on the continuous inf-sup constant from nonconforming schemes enable the a posteriori verification of the existence of regular roots in a neighbourhood of some computed nonconforming approximation utilizing the Newton-Kantorovich theorem

The publication of this work was supported by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Genome-wide association study of Fuchs’ endothelial corneal dystrophy in the German population

The genetic etiology of Fuchs Endothelial Corneal Dystrophy (FECD) is not yet fully elucidated. While the disease is widespread and the leading indication for corneal transplantation in the Western world, the concurrent shortage of corneal transplants underscores the urgent need for further research into the underlying mechanisms. Such investigations could enable the development of innovative therapeutic strategies. Therefore, we aimed to verify candidate genes previously identified and sought after novel variants in the German population. Undertaking a genome wide association study (GWAS) using the Axiom™ Precision Medicine Diversity Array on 157 FECD cases and 309 controls, followed by pathway enrichment analysis, we were able to confirm the significance of the TCF4 locus (rs613872, p  = 8.0 × 10 − 23 , OR = 8.60, h 2  = 0.72) and identified a range of novel variants. Further fine-mapping highlighted novel candidate SNPs, such as on chromosome 5 in the SEMA6A gene (rs153643, p  = 3.1 × 10 − 9 , OR = 2.75, h 2  = 0.30), and on chromosome 19 in the DNAJC19P3 gene (rs62117964, p  = 3.3 × 10 − 8 , OR = 3.61, h 2  = 0.29). SEMA6A gene is involved in apoptotic pathways and cytoskeletal remodeling, making it an interesting candidate gene for further investigations as a potential therapeutic target. Furthermore, several variants were identified in lncRNAs, which presumably influence the expression of nearby protein-coding genes. For example, LOC105372130 , which is associated with corneal hysteresis and corneal resistance factor, may influence the expression of TCF4 .Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.Universitätsmedizin Rostock (8980)Peer Reviewe

Labor Market Outcomes by Nativity and Gender in Germany

    No full text
Nativity and gender are important stratifying dimensions of labor market inequality, and the intersectionality of these dimensions creates specific labor market experiences and (dis)advantages for immigrant women, immigrant men, native women, and native men. However, most quantitative labor market research either examines nativity and gender inequalities separately or does not model their multiplicative effects, thus limiting our understanding of the complex configurations of inequality along both dimensions and the power relations involved. This dissertation explicitly adopts an intersectional perspective and contributes in scope and methodology to the analytical diversity of quantitative research on the multidimensional structuring, determinants, and consequences of labor market inequality by nativity and gender in Germany. Study 1 harmonizes survey data from 1976 to 2015 to provide the first comprehensive account of the gendered labor market outcomes of different immigrant arrival cohorts over time and relative to native women and men. Study 2 examines wage inequality by nativity and gender by applying matching decomposition techniques to the pairwise gaps between intersectional groups in a fully comparative setting. The full pattern of raw and conditional wage gaps emphasizes the relationality of privilege and disadvantage and suggests that native men enjoy a "double advantage" in wages. Study 3 compares the extent to which linear regression-based and matching decompositions are undermined by interrelated methodological issues common to intersectional settings: lack of common support, functional-form misspecification, and insufficient sample size. Study 4 shows how nativity disadvantages in the gendered work intensities and wages of female and male partners accumulate in couple households, constrain labor income sufficiency given household needs and available transfers, and thus lead to nativity gaps in income poverty

This dissertation examines the fiscal effects of migration in Germany across six chapters. Using various data sources and econometric methods, it analyzes topics including welfare benefit non-take-up, regional fiscal impacts of immigration, return migration dynamics, and the net fiscal contributions of migrants across generations. It also reviews key methodologies used to estimate migration’s fiscal impact. The results highlight the importance of considering generation, local context, and benefit type when evaluating fiscal effects of migration. The dissertation aims to improve understanding of how migration affects public finances and to inform evidence-based policymaking
