User-centered development of internet- and mobile-based interventions for sexual problems and well-being: insights from a qualitative study

    No full text
Background: Sexual problems and well-being are critical areas of mental health that remain under-addressed in traditional psychotherapeutic settings. From a patient’s view, reasons include feelings of discomfort and fear of stigma. Internet- and mobile-based interventions (IMIs) may offer a way to reach this population and provide necessary support. Thus far, few studies investigated IMIs for sexual problems, mostly targeting specific disorders, like erectile dysfunction or vaginismus. This study aimed to identify the key requirements for developing an IMI for a broader range of sexual problems and sexual well-being from the perspective of potential users. Method: To gather insights into user needs and preferences, we conducted 13 semi-structured interviews with adult participants in Germany that reported to have sexual problems. Interviews were analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Categories were established deductively-inductively from transcribed interview records. Our theory-based interview schedule informed the initial deductive coding system, while inductive categories emerged through multiple review rounds of the interview transcripts by all researchers. We also ensured inter-rater reliability. Results: Key findings revealed that expert knowledge and destigmatization are crucial components for a potential IMI for sexual problems and well-being. Preferred content topics included communication, dealing with sexualized violence, and sexual preferences. While most participants were open to using a potential IMI with their partners and preferred on-demand professional support, the study also highlighted the importance of avoiding insensitivity and inappropriate content related to sexual abuse. Conclusions: This study underlines the importance of developing an IMI targeting sexual problems that is inclusive, responsive to diverse user needs, and adaptable to various psychotherapeutic contexts.Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.Freie Universität Berlin (1008)Peer Reviewe

    No full text

The effects of happiness and hope on executive functions

    No full text
The article processing charge was funded by the Open Access Publication Fund of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The notion that positive emotions always yield positive outcomes is compelling, yet prior meta-analytic findings (19 effect sizes) suggest no impact on executive functions. Limitations have been noted regarding the induction of specific positive emotions and assessment quality, especially for cognitive flexibility and working memory. To expand on this, the current studies induced happiness and hope in college students to examine effects on inhibition, cognitive flexibility (study 1, N = 27), and working memory (study 2, N = 30). Results confirmed successful emotion induction and revealed that cognitive flexibility was significantly higher in the happiness condition than in a neutral condition (p = 0.014, d = 0.427). Findings suggest challenges in experimentally differentiating discrete positive emotions and indicate that not all executive functions are equally affected. Overall, these results lend support to Isen’s facilitator theory but should be interpreted with caution.Peer Reviewe

Glycan-induced fluorescence enhancement using a molecular rotor–boronic acid conjugate

Fluorescent molecular rotors (FMRs) are known for their sensitivity to changes in viscosity and confinement. Here, we show that a boronic acid conjugate of the rotor dye CCVJ exhibits strong enhancements in fluorescence upon binding to complex glycans. Glycan-induced fluorescence enhancement (GIFE) operates at low and high viscosity.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft 10.13039/501100001659Peer Reviewe

Transgressing Boundaries, Redefining Belonging - Muslim Women’s Social and Digital Activism and Representation in Germany

    No full text
This dissertation explores Muslim women’s activism and representation in contemporary Germany. It consists of three chapters that investigate how Muslim women contest their intersectional marginalization and discrimination along the axes of gender, race, ethnicity, and religion in both the physical and digital realms. Drawing on the theory of intersectional boundary making the first chapter examines the response strategies of Muslim women's organizations vis-à-vis anti-Muslim racism and Islamism. The second and third chapter illuminate Muslim women's representation and activism on the popular social media platform TikTok. Drawing on the concept of the Third Space they analyze main themes, formats and content types. The results show how intersectional minorities in Germany, specifically Muslim women, negotiate their belonging by reconfiguring symbolic boundaries along the axes of gender, religion, race and ethnicity. Exploring TikTok as an underresearched social media platform, it highlights the role of social media as a site for minority representation and activism. Ultimately, this work contributes to an understanding of the social dynamics unfolding in Germany's postmigrant society in the face of the rise of anti-pluralist forces

LARS: A Light-Augmented Reality System for Collective Robotic Interaction

    No full text
Collective robotics systems hold great potential for future education and public engagement; however, only a few are utilized in these contexts. One reason is the lack of accessible tools to convey their complex, embodied interactions. In this work, we introduce the Light-Augmented Reality System ( LARS ), an open-source, marker-free, cross-platform tool designed to support experimentation, education, and outreach in collective robotics. LARS employs Extended Reality (XR) to project dynamic visual objects into the physical environment. This enables indirect robot–robot communication through stigmergy while preserving the physical and sensing constraints of the real robots, and enhances robot–human interaction by making otherwise hidden information visible. The system is low-cost, easy to deploy, and platform-independent without requiring hardware modifications. By projecting visible information in real time, LARS facilitates reproducible experiments and bridges the gap between abstract collective dynamics and observable behavior. We demonstrate that LARS can serve both as a research tool and as a means to motivate students and the broader public to engage with collective robotics. Its accessibility and flexibility make it an effective platform for illustrating complex multi-robot interactions, promoting hands-on learning, and expanding public understanding of collective, embodied intelligence. This work was funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) under Germany’s Excellence Strategy—EXC 2002/1 “Science of Intelligence”—project number 390523135.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation)Peer Reviewe

A usage-based approach to narrative analysis

    No full text
Construction grammar approaches (CxG), such as Goldberg’s (2006), are based on the assumption that all linguistic knowledge consists of constructions—pairings of form and meaning/function—that are learned from external linguistic input and general cognitive mechanisms. More recently, this approach has been extended beyond the sentence boundary to include conventionalized discourse in CxG. Östman (2005) defines the notion of a discourse pattern as a holistic frame in the tradition of frame semantics (Fillmore 1982), encompassing text type and genre as form–meaning constellations. The analysis is based on recordings of personal and collective narratives from the Serbian Banat region, collected during fieldwork. Some of these recordings were transcribed and annotated with respect to syntactic, constructional, and narrative units. On the basis of these data, the properties of narratives of personal experience are examined and compared with the characteristics of another oral genre, the joke, which shows similarities in terms of structure and the contexts in which it is told. The results indicate that narratives are potentially suited for constructionist analysis as conventionalized discourse patterns

Eosinophils Play a Dual Role in the Immune Defense Against Mycobacteria

Tuberculosis (TB) remains the deadliest infectious disease caused by a single agent worldwide. During infection, characteristic granulomas arise with high cellular organization, harboring most of the mycobacteria. Granulomas consist of a necrotic core surrounded by epithelioid macrophages forming a tight barrier. This barrier prevents mycobacteria from escaping while shielding them from immune cells and antibiotics. The epithelioid transformation relies on transcription factor STAT6, activated by IL-4/-13, yet the cellular sources of these signals remain incompletely understood. Eosinophils have emerged as new players in the TB immune response. Using eosinophil-specific tools in zebrafish, this thesis demonstrates that eosinophils are recruited to granulomas where they degranulate effector proteins and express IL-4 throughout granuloma formation. Using IL-4/IL-13 deficient animals, this work reveals these cytokines are necessary for optimal mycobacterial control but surprisingly dispensable for epithelioid transformation and necrotic granuloma formation. In vitro assays identified several non-canonical inducers of epithelioid macrophage transformation, revealing unexpected pathway redundancy. These findings position eosinophils as versatile players with both direct anti-mycobacterial effector functions and indirect regulatory roles. This work challenges the hypothesis that IL-4/IL-13 signaling is essential for epithelioid transformation and highlights the multi-pathway regulation of granuloma formation. Identifying alternative epithelialization pathways adds crucial insights into in vivo signaling networks underlying granuloma formation, aiding the search for new therapeutic avenues in TB and other granulomatous diseases. Understanding redundant mechanisms controlling epithelioid transformation may inform development of nuanced adjunct therapies that improve antibiotic efficacy by disrupting granuloma barriers while preserving beneficial immune defense functions

    Conditional oughts and contrastive reasons

    No full text
I suggest a unified account of conditional oughts and of contrastive reasons. The core of the account is an explanation of facts about conditional oughts in terms of facts about contrastive reasons, and a reduction of contrastive reasons to non-contrastive reasons. In rejecting contrastivism about reasons, the account is consistent with orthodoxy about reasons. Moreover, it extends a standard view of how oughts and reasons are related to one another, and it makes sense of important and explanatorily recalcitrant phenomena. To the extent to which the account involves an explanation of facts about conditional oughts, it does not directly compete with semantic analyses of statements about conditional oughts. However, as I indicate in passing, the account coheres well with an important type of such analyses, while it is inconsistent with others.Open Access funding enabled and organized by Projekt DEAL.Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (1034)Peer Reviewe

The Use of Sensor-Based Behavioral Indicators in Dairy Husbandry

    No full text
As herd sizes increase, efficient management strategies become essential in dairy farming. Precision technologies offer promising tools to improve animal welfare and sustainability particularly in grazing systems, which support natural behavior and align with ecological principles. This thesis explores the use of sensor-based behavioral indicators to improve grazing management and investigates the implications of grazing on dairy cow welfare. A grazing study investigated whether cow behavior could indicate decreasing sward height. Behavioral data were collected using acceleration sensors and analyzed together with sward height, time of day, and weather conditions. The results showed complex interactions among all variables, making it difficult to draw clear conclusions about feed availability based only on behavior. Further research should therefore adopt a multi-dimensional approach and consider additional influencing factors to inform pasture allocation decisions. A dry-off study examined the welfare effects of pasture compared to indoor housing after abrupt milking cessation. All cows showed elevated cortisol metabolites after dry-off. However, pasture-housed cows showed more lying bouts than cows in the barn. This suggests that pasture housing, by facilitating more natural lying and moving behaviors, may provide some relief during the dry-off process. In both studies, the sensors used were not optimally suited for field application in pastoral settings. Future systems must be robust, animal-friendly, and weather-resistant. Improved behavioral analysis using shorter intervals, reliable thresholds, and machine learning can support better decision-making. Precision technologies in grazing management offer significant potential for animal welfare, farm efficiency, and environmental sustainability, if supported by an interdisciplinary approach and technological advancement
