AlGaN/AlN heterostructures: an emerging platform for integrated photonics
We introduce a novel material for integrated photonics and investigate aluminum gallium nitride (AlGaN) on aluminum nitride (AlN) templates as a platform for developing reconfigurable and on-chip nonlinear optical devices. AlGaN combines compatibility with standard photonic fabrication technologies and high electro-optic modulation capabilities with low loss over a broad spectral range, from UVC to long-wave infrared, making it a viable material for complex photonic applications. In this work, we design and grow AlGaN/AlN heterostructures and integrate several photonic components. In particular, we fabricate edge couplers, low-loss waveguides, directional couplers, and tunable high-quality factor ring resonators. These devices will enable nonlinear light-matter interaction and quantum functionality. The comprehensive platform we present in this work paves the way for photon-pair generation applications, on-chip quantum frequency conversion, and fast electro-optic modulation for switching and routing classical and quantum light fields.Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschunghttp://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100002347Einstein Stiftung Berlinhttp://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100006188European Research Councilhttp://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100000781Peer Reviewe
Non-standard employment and underemployment at labor market entry and their impact on later wage trajectories
Using data from the Australian Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) Survey (2001–2020), we examine how combined patterns of non-standard employment and underemployment in the early career shape later wage trajectories, paying careful attention to gender differences on a representative sample of Australian young men ( N = 470) and women ( N = 497). By combining multichannel sequence analysis and random effects panel models, we make three central findings. First, we identify seven distinct early employment trajectories, with the “standard” career, characterized by stable, full-time permanent jobs in the first 5 years post-education, being the most prevalent. Second, we find that combined patterns of non-standard employment and underemployment during early careers are associated with significant wage penalties. However, these wage penalties diminish within 10 years. Third, enduring and widening wage disparities are found only among youth primarily unemployed or inactive early in their careers. These penalties are particularly pronounced among men, underscoring the influence of the “ideal” worker norm. Overall, integrating underemployed jobseekers into the workforce and addressing gender-based biases should be a priority for policymakers to ensure equal opportunities and fair treatment for all workers in the labor market.Australian Research Council https://doi.org/10.13039/501100000923Peer Reviewe

On time-splitting methods for gradient flows with two dissipation mechanisms
We consider generalized gradient systems in Banach spaces whose evolutions are generated by the interplay between an energy functional and a dissipation potential. We focus on the case in which the dual dissipation potential is given by a sum of two functionals and show that solutions of the associated gradient-flow evolution equation with combined dissipation can be constructed by a split-step method, i.e. by solving alternately the gradient systems featuring only one of the dissipation potentials and concatenating the corresponding trajectories. Thereby the construction of solutions is provided either by semiflows, on the time-continuous level, or by using Alternating Minimizing Movements in the time-discrete setting. In both cases the convergence analysis relies on the energy-dissipation principle for gradient systems.Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschafthttp://dx.doi.org/10.13039/501100001659Gruppo Nazionale per l’Analisi Matematica, la Probabilità e le loro Applicazionihttp://dx.doi.org/10.13039/100012740MIUR - PRINPeer Reviewe
Characterization of PPIP5Ks using pharmacological and chemical biology approaches
This thesis describes the development of a chemical tool directed against the kinase domain of PPIP5K. Furthermore, the functions of the phosphatase domain were biochemically characterized, complementing structural investigations.
A high-throughput screening was carried out to identify lead structures for PPIP5K2 kinase inhibitors, yielding a single hit compound, 105229. Following biochemical characterization of inhibitor´s potency and mode of action, the structure activity relationship between 105229 and the kinase domain of PPIP5K was studied. Analogs of 105229 were chemically synthesized and assessed for their potency, uncovering structural motifs indispensable for inhibitory activity. The experimental data was used to guide computational studies that were able to identify a putative binding pose by means of molecular docking and molecular dynamics simulations. New inhibitor structures with 105229 as the lead structure were suggested based on in silico data. The differently substituted inhibitors were chemically synthesized and found to display greatly increased inhibitory activity as well as high selectivity. Furthermore, the highly potent PPIP5K inhibitors were tested in cellula, probing a variety of phenotypes associated with PPIP5K loss of activity. Additionally, the properties of the phosphatase domain of PPIP5Ks were examined by employing an NMR method established to directly monitor the various substrates and intermediates. With this method, the catalytic activity as well as the amino acids involved in the enzymatic mechanism could be characterized. With identification of a chemical tool directed against the kinase functionality of PPIP5Ks and a thorough biochemical investigation of the properties of the phosphatase domain, this work aims at providing a comprehensive study of the functions of PPIP5Ks
Integrating Structural and Process Approaches to Narcissism: Examining State-Trait Relations and Person-Situation Transactions in an Experimental Context
Neuere Forschung untersucht hingegen die kurzfristige Variabilität narzisstischer States, also momentane Ausprägungen. Narcissism, marked by an inflated self-image, entitlement, and attention-seeking, has been widely studied as a stable trait. However, recent research highlights its variability, exploring how situation and person factors influence momentary narcissistic manifestations, namely states. Studies using experience sampling methods provide ecological validity but fail to control situational factors, making it unclear whether narcissistic states arise from different situations or differing interpretations of the same situation. To address this, the current dissertation used an experimental design controlling for situation contact by placing participants in largely identical social interactions. Over six weeks, participants met in small groups to discuss predefined topics. This dissertation comprises two preregistered studies that examined narcissistic states and person-situation dynamics. Study One explored momentary narcissistic variability and state-trait relations, employing multilevel structural equation models. It investigated whether narcissism manifests consistently across all situations or varies with specific situation cues. Findings confirmed that narcissistic states align with trait structures but adapt to social contexts. Study Two explored person-situation relations using multilevel models and random-intercept cross-lagged panel models, revealing how narcissistic states influence and are influenced by situation perceptions. Results suggest situation perceptions primarily drive narcissistic manifestations. Overall, the research shows that narcissistic states are variable yet structured and are influenced by situational factors. The findings provide theoretical and methodological insights into person-situation dynamics, emphasizing the role of situation perceptions in shaping narcissistic expression
When and where: Choice behaviors of nectar-feeding bats in a spatially and temporally changing environment
A foraging animal must detect and respond to changes in the location and quantity of reward in the environment through its choice behaviour. Behaviour is affected by the forager’s flexibility, discrimination abilities and physiology. I investigated these aspects of foraging behaviour in bats of the genus Glossophaga. I investigated the bats’ behavioural flexibility through serial reversal learning, wherein two fixed locations repeatedly alternated between rewarding and non-rewarding states. The bats’ behaviour was consistent with second-order learning: increasing experience led to improved environmental exploitation. The bats showed sampling behaviour throughout the experiment. The results showed the important role of the temporal dynamics of reward availability in choice behaviour. Approximating ‘win stay lose shift’ indicated reliance on the most recent reinforcement history. I next investigated if bats could track the relative profitability of two options whose magnitudes changed continuously: a more complex and realistic environment. At multiple rates of change the bats made increasingly higher proportions of visits to the larger of two options as its relative profitability increased: clear evidence of environment-tracking. These experiments confirmed that in tracking, the bats relied on recent rather than cumulative reinforcement history, or the anticipation of reward in the near future. These experiments show that nectar-feeding bats tracked their environment, quickly detecting and responding to changes in the relative profitability of available reward options. They did so by relying on recent reinforcement history, and constant sampling behavior. The latter prevented total absorption to a source of reward
Assessing the tolerance of the marine bryozoan Electra pilosa to decreasing salinity in a laboratory experiment
Freshwater tolerance of intertidal colonies of the marine bryozoan Electra pilosa was investigated in a laboratory setting. Decreasing activity of colonies was observed with decrease in salinity. Colonies of E. pilosa showed reduced activity of individuals in salinities of 25.5‰ - 17.1‰ after one hour, but adapted to these conditions within two hours. Irreversible damage to some colonies was observed in solutions with 14.3‰ salinity. All colonies died in solutions of 8.6‰. The results of this study suggest a high resiliency of colonies to changes in salinity. Extreme changes do, however, pose considerable challenges to the organisms and may shape future distribution of E. pilosa in a changing climate.Peer Reviewe
Visual stimuli are frequently used as a starting point for classroom discourse, providing a foundation for teaching subject-related skills. Particularly in the context of interactional scaffolding, referencing different forms of representation, such as pictures, is intended to make it easier for L2 learners to develop their subject-related communicative skills. However, the relationship between image competence and students' linguistic-discursive competence remains unclear. This article addresses the challenges that L2 learners and teachers face when discussing images in a subject-related manner. It also explores the potential role of interactional scaffolding in picture-based conversations. The article presents data from an empirical study conducted with second language learners at a secondary school in the German state of Hesse. By reconstructing a dyadic picture conversation with an L2 learner, the article highlights acquisition-supporting practices and the possibilities of interactional scaffolding in the classroom
Queer mountains: Migrant drag performers reimagining sexual citizenship in Germany
This article seeks to understand how staging, performing and re-narrating experiences of queer migration can be utilized to radically reimagine queer migrants’ subjectivities and politics in today’s Germany. Informed by ethnographic research conducted between 2020 and 2023, including 22 qualitative interviews with drag performers, I focus on the emerging scene of ‘migrant drag’ in Germany, informed by transnational histories of queer performance and border-crossing. Through acts of migrant drag, ‘building queer mountains’ appears as a queer migrant practice of finding alternative pathways to overcome obstacles that limit queer migrant subjectivities and to claim locality and stages for queer migrant politics beyond the normative scripts of sexual citizenship. Ultimately, ‘building queer mountains’ shows that sexual citizenship, sustained by (homo)normative sexualizations and hierarchical racialization, could be ‘crossed’ and reimagined through the collective and creative work of a community in search of alternative worlds.Peer Reviewe
