The value of hydroclimatic teleconnections for snow-based seasonal streamflow forecasting in central Asia
Due to the long memory of snow processes, statistically based seasonal streamflow prediction models in snow-dominated catchments can successfully leverage, but also typically rely on, snowpack estimates. Using mountainous catchments in central Asia as a case study, we demonstrate how seasonal hydrological forecasts benefit from incorporating large-scale climate oscillations (COs). Firstly, we examine the teleconnections between the major COs and peak precipitation season in eight catchments across the Pamir Mountains and the Tian Shan from February to June. We then employ a machine learning (ML) framework that incorporates snow water equivalent (SWE) and dominant CO indices as predictors for mean discharge from April to September. Our workflow leverages an ensemble technique with multiple SWE estimates from near-time global data sources and diverse types of explainable machine learning models. We find that the winter states of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) enhance SWE-based forecasts of seasonal discharge in the study catchments. We identify three instances in which the inclusion of COs as additional predictors could be instrumental for snowpack-based seasonal streamflow forecasting: (1) when forecasts are issued at extended lead times and accumulated SWE is not yet representative of seasonal terrestrial water storage, (2) when climate variability during the forecasted season plays a larger role in shaping seasonal discharge, and (3) when SWE estimates for a catchment are subject to larger uncertainty. Our approach provides a useful way to reduce uncertainties in seasonal discharge predictions in data-scarce, snowmelt-dominated catchments.Volkswagen FoundationPeer Reviewe

It forms Part V and is called the multimedia section. Primarily, it contains the figures and videos and the corresponding list of illustrations with picture credits. Additionally, this section includes self-created indexes – the Greek glossary and the terminology table. These are not part of the PhD thesis but resulted from the research process – using them can make it easier to work with some text references of written sources. The glossary is an initiated (ongoing) collection of Greek (clothing) vocabulary that appears in written sources. The table is a compilation that links the terms for the chiton – some of these are used differently in the research literature – with their respective pattern, a definition, and the corresponding researcher
Analyzing Men’s and Women’s Entries Into, Exits From, and Experiences in Gender-Atypical Occupations
Negative consequences arising from women and men working in different occupations render addressing occupational segregation a significant policy goal. However, most research focuses on explaining segregation; strategies to foster entries and persistence in occupations dominated by the other gender receive less attention. Furthermore, occupational integration is often viewed as beneficial for women's economic advancement. The reluctance of men to work in gender-atypical occupations, on the other hand, plays a subordinate role. In response, this cumulative dissertation hones in on the integrating potential of gender-atypical occupations for women as well as men. The first study highlights a policy potential of increasing men's entry into gender-atypical occupations based on evidence from gender-atypical learning experiences in the civilian service in Germany. The second study compares the exit from gender-atypical occupations with the exit from firms in which one's own gender is in the minority and shows that exits from gender-atypical occupations operate along gender-specific mechanisms. The third study explores the relationship between the selection into gender-atypical occupations and the experiences within them, showing that stress-resilient individuals are more likely to select into them, yet, this does protect them against negative mental health consequences of gender-atypical occupations. These studies trace the dynamics of gender-atypical occupations through entries, exits, and the interdependence between selection and experiences. The analyses reveal that each gender faces distinct obstacles when entering and working in gender-atypical occupations. Thus, complementing efforts focused on women with similar attention to men not only informs strategies for integrating female-dominated occupations but also provides a more nuanced understanding of gender-specific barriers and potentials for occupational integration
Singular Mean-Field Control and Games and Control Randomisation with Applications to Reinforcement Learning
This thesis explores two main areas: mean-field control (MFC)/games (MFG) with multi-dimensional singular controls and the control randomisation approach together with its applications to reinforcement learning. The first chapter introduces MFC problems with singular controls and costs depending on the state, control, and their joint law. Using novel two-layer parametrisations, we rewrite rewards in terms of continuous functions of parametrisation of the control process, derive a dynamic programming principle (DPP) and characterise the value function as the minimal supersolution to a quasi-variational inequality in the Wasserstein space. The second chapter extends this framework to MFGs where both the impact and costs of singular controls depend on the state and control. We introduce a novel class of MFGs with a broader set of admissible controls, called MFGs of parametrisations, prove that the reward functional is continuous on the set of parametrisations and establish the existence of Nash equilibria in both the MFG of parametrisations and the underlying MFG with singular controls. The third chapter addresses MFC problems with common noise using the control randomisation technique, replacing the control process with a Poisson point process, controlling its intensity instead. By reformulating admissible controls as L0-valued processes adapted only to the common noise, we construct an equivalent randomised control problem and represent the value function via a backward stochastic differential equation (BSDE) with constrained jumps and derive a randomised DPP. The fourth chapter develops a policy gradient framework for continuous-time reinforcement learning based on the connection between stochastic control and randomised problems. We derive a new policy gradient representation featuring parametrised intensity policies and develop tailored actor-critic algorithms, demonstrated via numerical case studies of optimal switching problems in the energy sector
Approximation of Stochastic Partial Differential Equations with Applications to Order Book Modelling
In today's financial markets, most transactions are processed via electronic limit order books. The mathematical modeling of these order books is fundamental for the analysis of the market microstructure, which describes the detailed mechanisms and behavior of financial markets at a granular level. In particular, a clear understanding of how limit order books function is crucial for the understanding of price formation, liquidity provision, and market efficiency. The objectives of this thesis are twofold. First, we establish a first and second-order approximation for an infinite dimensional limit order book model in a single ("critical") scaling regime, where market orders and limit orders occur on the same time scale. For this scaling, we achieve non-degenerate approximations at both, first and second-order level for the price and the volume dynamics. The first-order approximation results in a coupled ODE-PDE system, while the second-order approximation can be described through a non-degenerate infinite-dimensional stochastic evolution equation driven by a cylindrical Brownian motion. A drawback of the considered model is that without further restrictions on the coefficients it is not guaranteed that the volume will remain non-negative, which is a desirable feature for limit order book models. Moreover, in markets characterized by low liquidity, it may be sensible to integrate significant gaps between standing orders. In the second part of the thesis, we therefore construct non-negative martingale solutions to an SPDE, the so-called stochastic porous medium equation, which exhibit sticky-reflected behavior at zero
Task-irrelevant emotional expressions are not mimicked, but may modulate the mimicry of task-relevant emotional expressions

Mimicry is absent when participants’ task does not involve engaging with the expressers’ emotions. This may be because task-irrelevant faces (i.e., faces that participants were instructed to ignore) are not processed. To assess whether processed task-irrelevant faces are also not mimicked, we conducted three studies [Study 1: N = 74 participants (27 men; Mage = 26.9 years); Study 2: N = 53 participants (20 men; Mage = 25.8 years); Study 3: N = 51 participants (7 men; Mage = 26.8 years)] using an affective priming paradigm in which one face was task-relevant and one was to be ignored, as a framework to explore the impact of disregarded yet still perceptually processed faces on mimicry. We found that even though both faces were processed, only task-relevant faces were mimicked. Hence, our studies suggest that emotional mimicry depends not only on emotional processing as such but also on the way participants prioritize one piece of information over another. Further, task-irrelevant faces interfered with the mimicry of task-relevant faces. This suggests that even though incongruent task-irrelevant faces do not elicit an empathic (mimicry) response, they still may provide a context that can change the meaning of task-relevant faces and thus impact on the mimicry response.Peer Reviewe
