Constitution of Plurality Through Social Engagement: Shared Emotions among Social Actors and the Potential of Social Change

    No full text
Many social sciences, including psychology, have seen an affective turn in recent decades. Current discussions in the philosophy of emotions center on the question of how emotions affect the transformation of individual and collective agencies. This paper aims to elucidate the process by which shared emotions among social actors consolidate into new plural community during societal crises, which destabilize current social norms and create potential for social transformation. By adding the social engagement studies to a phenomenological approach to collective emotions, we theorize the mechanisms through which emotions first become shared through social engagement, a process in which collective attention to the norms of social action emerges through interaction, resulting in attempts to modify or reinforce them. According to Thomas Teo’s view of subjectivity as a psychological concept, the first-person standpoint (Iperspective), move-point (changing positions or establishing new ones), do-point (actualization and appearance), and end-point (the vision of how the community ought to be changed) will be considered as constituents of emerging plural subjectivity. Shared emotions—encompassing a variety of distinct, yet integrated, and reciprocal singular perspectives of social actors in shared circumstances—serve as the foundation for bottom-up community creation. The trigger of these processes—a rupture in the current state of affairs—creates disturbance and opens space to possible transformation of social norms. We argue that shared emotions could lead to agency transformation, whereby the individual and collective sense that nothing can be done transforms into I/we can do something. By acting together, present social actors could actualize themselves as community, which serves as basis for social change. Conclusively, we claim that by focusing on the interplay between social engagement and shared emotions we can better understand the mechanism of social movements development and their potential to initiate social change

    Sexuality and Capitalism

    No full text
The main aim of this chapter is to show that sexuality and capitalism are intrinsically related. Such an endeavour demands extracting sex from the domains of nature, reproduction, and the private, and relating it to the intricate norms of capitalism. The first part of the chapter looks at why capitalism and sexuality have been articulated as belonging to separate spheres of life. How did it come to seem that “being a sex” and “having sex” is so entirely removed from the “investment of money to make more money”? The second part of the chapter provides an overview of the historical evolution of capitalism and its relationship to sexuality, focusing on the nineteenth-century transition from the household family-based economy to a fully developed capitalist free labour economy. The main characters of this chapter are homo economicus and his economically invisible wife, the producers of valuable social relations, as well as various “reformable” or “irreformable” others whose sex is deemed of no value or even against value. The chapter presents social relations as capitalist and sexual, and treats the dichotomies social–natural, public–private, and economic–cultural as interwoven in the (de)politicization of both sexuality and capitalism

Гете с Флобером: образовни роман и идеја образовања

    No full text
The work is dedicated to the analysis, comparison and monitoring of changes in the understanding of education in two prose endeavors that thematize it: in Goethe’s trilogy about the growing up of Wilhelm Meister and in Flaubert’s story about the apprenticeship of Bouvard and Péquichet. Referring to some contemporary insights of the theory of education, the author suggests that these works does not deviate from the classical understanding of education as gaining one’s character and place in the world after more or less stormy and more or less successful turmoil, but at the same time signals and tests the limit of such a linear understanding of growing up. On the margins of these works, it is concluded, one can find, still ironized or caricatured, the future idea of education as “always already” self-education, which does not presuppose the given social goal and the completion of the research journey according to the possibilities of one’s own shaping

The ‘means’ and the ‘ends’ of economic calculation: The missing aspect of an epochal dispute

    No full text
Current technological advances have revived the old socialist calculation debate. While the arguments on the socialist side appear to be backed by exciting technological developments, the pro-market camp still mainly relies on the classical thinking of the Austrian school. A reasonable way to reinvigorate the freemarket thesis is to look at the ends of economic calculations, intentionally overlooked during the classical period of the debate. A valuable supplement to the contemporary pro-market position could be found in the ordoliberal vision that emphasised the interdependence of various spheres and the power problem

Orbán and Vučić: From Disparate Beginnings to Shared Values

    No full text
Viktor Orbán and Aleksandar Vučić have forged an unexpected partnership in recent years. Their meetings and displays of camaraderie have notably increased since 2019, particularly following the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Presently, Orbán and Vučić share strikingly similar worldviews, critiquing the West while maintaining ambiguity toward Russia and promoting collectivist values of nation and family while disparaging individualism and the rule of law. However, their ideological backgrounds could not be more disparate. Orbán embarked on his political journey as a pro-Western, dissenting leader of liberal Fidesz, while Vučić entered politics with the illiberal, anti-Western Serbian Radical Party. In 1999, Vučić served as Serbia’s information minister during its conflict with NATO, which included Orbán’s Hungary. This analysis explores Orbán’s and Vučić’s ideological evolution trajectories, leading to their gradual convergence. The chapter examines the past critical differences between Vučić and Orbán, especially regarding ethnic minorities and migrants. Their relationships with Western liberal powers partly explain the periods of discord between the two leaders and how they retrospectively presented these disagreements to the public amidst heightened cooperation. This exploration of the ideological discourses of these two authoritarian figures enhances understanding of the various strains of illiberalism in Europe, the interdependence between authoritarian projects, and their broader implications, notably amid the deepening East-West fault lines. This is an Accepted Manuscript (AM) of a book chapter published by Routledge in “Civic and Uncivic Values in Hungary Value Transformation, Politics, and Religion”, edited By Sabrina P. Ramet and László Kürti, on September 16, 2024, available online: https://www.routledge.com/978103278651

Političko osnaživanje: uloga partijske politike u budućnosti evropskih muslimana

    No full text
This paper critically examines the socio-political dynamics affecting Muslims in Europe, focusing on the significant barriers that hinder their active participation in party politics. A central argument is that the internalized secular worldview has led to widespread political disengagement. This issue is further compounded by the first generation of Muslims in Europe, who developed and entrenched a minority mindset, along with certain ulema who promote socio-political passivity and quietism, severely limiting more complex and effective political engagement. To counter this situation, the paper emphasizes the urgent need for Muslims to move beyond status quo or reactionary approaches, such as supporting mainstream parties or resorting to political abstention, both of which only superficially address their concerns. Instead, it advocates establishing independent political entities rooted in Islamic principles that strive for more profound systemic change. Such an approach would empower Muslims to form strategic alliances, challenge the status quo, and tackle broader societal issues, ultimately advancing the interests of both their communities and European society as a whole.

Akik utoljára nevetnek: Élő humor és virtuális közösség a Vajdaságban

    No full text
The article examines the most common topics on the memes of two humorous Facebook pages well- known in the Vojvodina Hungarian community. The visual and textual elements of the memes are linked to rurality, eating and food, ethnic others (Serbs and Hungarians from Hungary), and their languages and cultures, as well as border crossing. By analyzing these common themes and their ways of representation, the article sheds light on the lo- cal cultural and linguistic characteristics of this humor, as well as the function of virtual humor in a community that is not only a minority one but also increasingly diasporic
