Kant, Deleuze, and the differential theory of the faculties

    No full text
Konačno, u trećem delu rada ukazujem na značaj, ali i na ograničenja Kantovog shvatanja teorije moći u pogledu učenja, kao i na to zašto učenje, prema Delezu, zahteva jednu novu, divergentnu ili diferencijalnu teoriju moći, koja ne bi bila zasnovana na principu zajedničkog čulaThis paper presents Deleuze’s interpretation of Kant’s theory of the faculties, with particular emphasis on the significance this theory – and Deleuze’s development of it – has for the concept of learning. In the first part of the paper, I examine Deleuze’s reading of Kant’s system from the standpoint of the harmony of the faculties and the notion of common sense. In the second part, I show how Deleuze, drawing on Kant’s model of the judgment of the sublime, subjects the principle of common sense to critique. Finally, in the third part, I point to both the importance and the limitations of Kant’s understanding of the theory of the faculties in relation to learning, and explain why, according to Deleuze, learning requires a new, divergent or differential theory of the faculties – one that is not grounded in the principle of common sense

To be or not to be a feminist: The effects of feminist label and messenger's gender on the women's receptivity of feminist ideas

    No full text
To identify psychological underpinnings of rejecting or supporting feminist ideas, we tested whether receptivity of a message about existing gender inequalities varies depending on who sends the message - woman/man who does or doesn’t declare her/himself as a feminist. Apart from testing whether common negative associations with a feminist label affect women’s perceptions of pro-feminist messages, we raised a question of male allyship in reaching equality. Due to the potential internalization of stereotypes about feminists, we expected benevolent sexism and feminist self-identification to moderate hypothesized relationships so that participants prominent on benevolent sexism and not identifying as feminists would be more hesitant to support feminist ideas. A total of 210 women (Mage = 33.11, SDage = 13.83) took part in the 2x2 parallel group online experiment. We manipulated the characteristics of the person advocating feminist ideas (gender and feminist label) through four vignettes. Each participant saw one of the following scenarios – 1) a woman claiming to be a feminist 2) a man claiming to be a feminist 3) a woman denying being a feminist or 4) a man denying being a feminist; all shared the same message about gender inequality. Via 5-point Likert scales, participants assessed the person showcased in the text, the message itself, and their willingness to participate in future events with a similar agenda. While there was no label effect on any of the dependent variables, we found that women were assessed to be more competent speakers compared to men (F (1, 206) = 12.01, p < .001, η2 = .055). Participants feminist identity moderated the relationship between the speakers’ gender and the willingness to take part in pro-feminist events (F (3, 206) = 27.62, p < .001, R2 = .287). Those with more pronounced feminist identity were more likely to contribute to the movement actively, but only if the call for action came from a female. This readiness to protest/sign a petition may stem from the perception of belonging to the same group with the one calling for action. No effect of message framing diverges from previous research results. This could be due to the young and educated participants, who supported feminist ideas regardless of who communicates them. Despite observed messenger’s gender effects, this study still leaves room for male-female allyship and collective action towards gender equality, since male messengers were perceived positively, thus as allies

Empathy as a Cultural Process: A Critical Analysis of the Phenomenon of Empathy Through Socio-Cultural Psychology

    No full text
This paper critically examines the phenomenon of empathy by contrasting mainstream and socio-cultural psychological perspectives. While mainstream psychology conceptualizes empathy as a stable, measurable cognitive-affective trait, cross-cultural psychology often overlooks cultural, linguistic, and historical specificities. Drawing on Vygotsky’s notion of higher mental functions, as well as the works of Jaan Valsiner and Barbara Rogoff, the paper argues that empathy should be studied as a culturally mediated and developmentally emergent process shaped by symbolic interaction, internalization, and participation in communal practices. Through critical review of literature, the paper reveals key epistemological and methodological limitations of mainstream approaches – particularly their universalist assumptions and reliance on decontextualized measurement tools while illuminating socio-cultural perspective that, in contrast, foregrounds the dynamic, situated nature of empathy, embedded in cultural narratives, value systems, and power relations. The paper concludes by proposing a research agenda grounded in qualitative, context-sensitive methodologies and outlines implications for pedagogy, social justice, and democratic life. Specifically, it argues that empathy should be cultivated as a communicative and moral phenomenon, essential for fostering emotional literacy, collective responsibility, and intercultural understanding in educational and civic contexts

The Reception of Palamas and Palamite Tradition in Justin Popović

    No full text
This paper aims to elucidate the reception of St Gregory Palamas in the works of the Serbian theologian St Justin Popović (1894–1979). This is a very relevant venture since Justin Popović exercised a formative influence on two twentieth-century Orthodox scholars of Palamas, Cyprian Kern and Amfilohije Radović. First, it analyzes Justin’s early work, A Diary of Prayer (Molitveni dnevnik), written from 1920 to 1921, in order to demonstrate that his encounter with Gregory Palamas and Palamite theology takes place not through the academic elaboration of Palamas’s main theological position, but rather through the very concrete application of hesychast prayer and spirituality. Then, the focus shifts to the second volume of Justin’s Dogmatics from 1935, in which the references to Palamas’s works appear for the first time. Finally, it investigates the influence Justin exercised on Amfilohije Radović’s dissertation on the Holy Trinity in Palamas, completed in 1973

On The Concept of „Therapy Culture“ – Functionalist, Critical and The Actor-Oriented Currents in Theorizing the Social Role of Knowledge about the Human Psyche

    No full text
This article explicates and systematizes the theoretical assumptions behind various approaches to conceptualizing the phenomenon of „therapy culture“. Beginning with the definition of therapy culture as a process of disseminating knowledge from disciplines such as psychology, psychiatry, and psychotherapy, and their integration into various institutions and cultural spheres, the article focuses on three theoretical currents in conceptualizing this phenomenon. We begin with the „functionalist“ current, which developed from the 1960s to the 1980s, and is based on the presuppositions of Durkheimian functionalism. We continue with the „critical“ current, which views therapy culture as a mechanism for maintaining social domination. Finaly, we will explicate the theoretical presuppositions of the “actor-oriented” current which sees therapy culture as a system of meaning that guides social interactions. We conclude by pointing to the possibility of combining the aforementioned theoretical currents into a unified conceptual model that could systematize existing research on therapy culture in the post-Yugoslav context and serve a heuristic role in generating future research hypotheses

The Double-edged Sword of Digital Technologies: Exploring Precarious Work and Life in Serbia’s Local Newsrooms

    No full text
Digital technologies and platforms havefundamentally transformed journalismand the media industry. Their position within theroutines and everyday life of newsrooms has provided tools for the reinvention of the craft, but also overburdened journalists whose working conditions are becoming increasingly precarious. Suchis the casefor those working in local media outlets in Serbia, a post-socialist country in a state of permanent transition, where the political and the economic are continually entangled. Because of amedia privatization process, local newsrooms shrunk or completely shut down. How journalists’ precarious work interacts with precarious life, and vice versa, has rarelybeen explored, especially in regard tothe influence of technology. Thus, the aim of this articleis two-fold. Firstly, itexpandsthe notion of precarious work to include the ontologyof journalistic practicesin countries such as Serbia. Secondly, I empirically map the points atwhich the digital intersects with precarious work in givenpolitical and economic conditions. The researchis based on ten semi-structured, in-depth interviews with journalists working in Serbian local media. As the findings show, the pressures they experience go beyond the market, since the financial certainty is often a political outcome rooted within the polarizing Serbian landscape. In such an environment, digital exacerbates and expands the economic and the political perils of doing local journalism

Human Needs, and (De)Stereotyping in English Gothic Novels

    No full text
By analyzing people’s behavior and then reducing the socio-psychological complexity of existence and actions to the basic “triggers” of cognitive and emotional reactions, message creators establish and spread policies of consumerism and conformity. In the modern world, which is characterized by a pluralism of ideological, political, and ethical beliefs, but with constant market competition and the imperative of profit as one of the basic motives of all activities, the mass media primarily fulfill the tasks of increasing viewership/readership, as well as shaping the worldview and needs of their audience. (Boskovic et al., 2012:128-129). The aim of this work is to expand the scientific and social discussion about the impact of art on the public, first of all. Analyzing the authentic representatives of the English Gothic novels, we tried to point out how the writers of that time, through the construction of characters, plots, even specific architecture and interiors, tried to broadcast a personal view of the reality of that time, even reflecting their conscious or unconscious self in certain interrelationships in the stories. Gothic, as a term for very authentic architecture, a style of clothing, and a period in the rule of the aristocracy, is also an unquestionable pillar on which the themes of sexuality, terror, fear, and freedom (of authentic thoughts and living) were further elaborated. As in media theories, so above all in psychology and social psychology, it was necessary to determine what is moral and what is unacceptable and deviant. Through different historical periods, unwritten norms changed, most often based on institutional or non-institutional influence that in that period had primacy over society (royal families, church, parliament), about what is socially desirable behavior. By defining what was acceptable and what was deviant, politics, religion, and economics could manipulate human emotions and needs, encouraging them or suppressing them. While on the one hand religion, criminal law, and unwritten customs define sexually desirable behavior and gender roles (women above all), on the other hand it is the media and advertising that use and exploit this topic abundantly, for the needs of consumerism and circulation. A significant number of philosophical and psychological analyzes and discussions about Gothic literature have shown that the works of this direction are not mere and empty “entertainment,” as the majority of film and literary works of horror or erotic themes try to simplify and present. It is Sedgwick who points out that “by calling the Gothic halfway to becoming a language or imagining it to be a crypt, they provoke our curiosity as to what threshold the Gothic raises or what lies in its darkness.” (Sedgwick, 1981: 263). Exactly what we suppress and avoid thinking about because it is “immoral,” “perverse,” or scary, we look for and are provided in literature by artists who either enter the depth and essence of life and relationships or “play” on simple marketing of “forbidden fruit.”Gothic substance is a thing whose materiality is sublimated into freedom from all conditioning factors, making it simultaneously madness, dream, and play. (Brown, 1987:277). Gothic is permeated with elements of the reality of the time, as well as imagination, and in the descriptions of this style, the focus is on fiction, the unreal, and even the perverted. Criticizing the aristocracy, closed in its castles and with secrets that the people could only guess, Gothic literature abundantly described freedom from slavery and imposed rules, through entering the walls and moving sexual tendencies, incest, and female oppression into stories on the edge of reality and fiction

From virtual presence to resistance: the evolution of digital bodies in art

    No full text
This article investigates digital bodies as socio-political constructs embodying intricate power relations within digital land-scapes. It posits that artistic representations of digital bodies critically engage with and resist dominant systems of surveil-lance, commodification, and algorithmic control. Utilizing an interdisciplinary lens that merges the history and theory of new media art with concepts from cyborg theory, surveillance capitalism, and posthumanism, this study examines the construction and perception of digital bodies across diverse digital art forms. The synthesis of these perspectives reveals how digital entities are shaped by data, identification processes, and power relations. Artists engage with these themes in their practices, often aligning their critiques with theoretical discourses interrogating the blurring of boundaries between the physical and digital realms and positing that the formation of digital bodies reflects contemporary power dynamics. Analyzing key artworks from early digital art to contemporary AI- driven practices, the study shows that digital bodies initially provided platforms for identity experimentation, democratization, and liberation, enabling individuals to explore fluid identities outside conventional boundaries. However, these entities gradually became digitized through intensive data collection, behavioral surplus extraction, and pervasive surveillance, transforming them into instruments of control and economic exploitation, where identities are algorithmically defined and commercially managed. Ultimately, the article argues that digital bodies in art often transcend esthetic representation, existing within and responding to broader socio-political realities. They serve not only as critiques of prevailing systems but also as catalysts encouraging deeper reflections on identity, agency, and the potential for resistance in the digital era.Article available at: https://link.springer.com/epdf/10.1007/s00146-025-02565-7?sharing_token=kYGRgQhwffHg-7l2d5kCVve4RwlQNchNByi7wbcMAY6zm-KHW77Mnzq4mCbp0uhhw-xPEGOFHwC-PJO3k17VSQUc4Llv_YQZFDfWqBawJsj6GUxQ-ygHb_i77QUSanm_KRJyCSbVffLysGvALNcwaW8DzP99E6s60YJYdaiGVE4%3

    Korenovanja. Čari radikalizma

    No full text
