Performatizujući saznavaoca : O semiotičkoj analizi subjekta i znanja
This paper considers epistemological implications of the concept
of performative, starting from the elaborate conception provided by Judith
Butler’s theories. The primary postulate of this work is that various interpretations
of the performative, with their semiotic shifting from the notions of
truth-evaluability and the descriptive nature of meaning, form a line of abandoning
traditional epistemological distinction between subject and object.
Through other semiotic concepts which will be presented and analysed, this
line reveals the key epistemological issues in the light of semiology, while
Judith Butler’s concept of performativity is viewed as a possible outcome of
this course of semiology of knowledge, resulting in final transcending of the
category of subject
Naming/Taming the Enemy: Balkan Oral Tradition and the Formation of ‘the Turk’ as the Political Enemy
The article approaches the question of political views promoted by oral tradition
through Carl Schmitt’s notion of politics as the distinction between friend and
enemy. It focuses on four versions of “Perović Batrić”, a comparatively short Montenegrin
song with a typical subject of blood revenge, documented during the
first half of the nineteenth century in Serbia, Montenegro and Herzegovina. It is
demonstated that the only version documented without any impact of the ruling
Montenegrin Petrović family from Cetinje displays explicit antagonism between
the Montenegrin and Herzegovinian Orthodox Christian tribes and has no explicit
antiturkish sentiment. In addition, two other versions written down from Montenegrin
singers influenced by Cetinje as the political centre show the consolidation
of political perspective and emphasize the hostilities between the Montenegrins
and the local Turks. True political character of the enemy in the Schmittian sense,
it is argued, is finally recognized only in the version of “Perović Batrić” edited by
the Montenegrin bishop-prince Petar Petrović Njegoš II. In this song, the hostility
towards Batrić’s adversary Osman follows not from his tribal conformity or his
distinctive personality, but from his “Turkishness” as such. It is therefore argued
that this recognition of the specifically political character of the enemy occurred
under the increasing influence of Cetinje (as the political centre) on the representation
of the oral tradition and that nationalistic elements in oral tradition mainly
became associated with it, and inserted into it, during the process of publication
and canonization of the oral tradition in the first half of the nineteenth centur
This study examines impact of addictive media use to reception
capabilities towards less preferred media. Addiction to all media was measured in
order to compare will to receive less preferred media. Results show that those media
addicts that are happy with internet are least happy with other media when compared
to those who are primarily happy with television, radio or print and their relation
towards less preferred media. Results show special attachment of internet addicts to
media they are addicted to. They are compared with addictive features and
expression potential of internet, television, radio and print. Decrease in expression
and reception potential towards non-proffered media may be caused because of substitution
of more expressive activities, such as direct communication with less
expressive activities such as indirect (mediated) communication. Findings should be
used as a clue for further inquiry that would examine how internet use affects emotional
expressivity, creativity and wellbeing.
Protivčinjenični iskazi i nefizički ceteris paribus : jedna eksplanatorna greška
I reconsider a type of counterfactual argument often used in historical
sciences on a recent widely discussed example of the so-called “rare
Earth” hypothesis in planetary sciences and astrobiology. The argument is
based on the alleged “rarity” of some crucial ingredient for the planetary
habitability, which is, in Earth’s case, provided by contingent evolutionary
development. For instance, the claim that a contingent fact of history which
has created planet Jupiter enables shielding of Earth from most dangerous
impact catastrophes, thus increasing Earth’s habitability, leads often to the
conclusion that such state-of-affairs must be rare in the Galaxy. I argue that
this reasoning is deeply flawed, for several closely related reasons. In addition,
the relevance of the philosophical problem of transworld identity for
this kind of historical reasoning in science is put forward. This highlights
many explanatory problems one faces when using historical counterfactuals
in study of complex, nonlinear dynamical systems – and bolsters the relevance
of philosophy for evaluation of scientific explanatory claims
A Pragmatic Critique of the Conception of Everyday Praxis Within Jeffrey Alexander’s Cultural Sociology
This paper tries to critically analyse Jeffrey Alexander’s cultural sociology. In the first part of the paper I will examine Alexander’s conception of hermeneutical structuralism which argues that conventional systemic sociology and richness of experience found in everyday praxis can be reconciled. In the next section I will provide a critique of this kind of approach to social theory and maintain that Alexander’s sociology is, in principle, reductionist regarding everyday life. In addition, I will also point out some of the comparative advantages that pragmatically oriented theory has in the attempt of integrating theoretical and practical knowledge. In the final section of the paper, I will try to illustrate some of the major shortcomings of Alexander’s sociology on the concrete example of advances in computer technology
