    Enlightenment and Totalitarianism

    No full text
Manje će nas interesovati opravdanost ovakvog istorijskog antedatiranja porekla totalitarizma, a više heuristička plodnost podrazumevanja njegove veze sa prosvetiteljstvom u savremenim teorijskim elaboracijama i kritikama (radikalnog) kolektivizma. The aim of this paper is to outline the history of bringing the concepts of "enlightenment" and "totalitarianism" into connection. The linkage of the two concepts occurred after the Second World War, in the attempt to find the ideological roots of totalitarian formations of the twentieth century in the literature of the eighteenth century. Our interest will be less focused on the viability of this historical back-dating of the origin of totalitarianism, and more on the heuristic fruitfulness of assuming its connection with the enlightenment in contemporary theoretical elaborations and criticisms of (radical) collectivism. The final part of the article suggests that the understanding of the Enlightenment, seemingly paradoxically, decides the destiny of totalitarianism: on one hand, it is quite appropriate to attribute the responsibility for the modern totalitarian tendencies to the enlightenment "project"; on the other hand, equally compellingly, it may be claimed that the investment is incomplete or falsified ideals of enlightenment represent the antidote to imperial, colonial, hegemonic and discriminatory policies and practices of modern thought- and social-formations

Memory and the uses of wartime past in contemporary Bosnia and Herzegovina: The case of the Bosniak campaign for the October 2013 population census

    No full text
This paper explores how the recent past and wartime memories have been used as a narrative component during the 2013 population census in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which was the country’s first official population count since the violent conflict and mass demographic changes of the early 1990s. It examines narratives employed in debates over the census within the Bosniak group and considers the relationship of these narratives with the Bosniak political position. The paper argues that the 2013 population census in Bosnia and Herzegovina was a highly politicized process, imbued with heated debates and aggressive political campaigns surrounding identity questions on ethnonational and religious affiliation and mother tongue

Transparency of scale: geographical information program (Google Earth) and the view from beyond

    No full text
Abstract: A nine-minute film, directed by architects Charles and Ray Eames, “Powers of Ten” visualized for the first time the journey through the different scales of existence - from outer space to the space of the atom. This film inspired the Keyhole Project, which, twenty years later, became Google Earth, a (non) commercial online tool for surveying the surface of Earth, making those intriguing images from the 1970s part of our everyday life. Today, as Google Earth counts more than one billion downloads per year, Felix Baumgartner experienced zoom-out mode in physical space, launching himself into the stratosphere. This new overview of the planet that is provided to us by Google Earth virtually, Felix Baumgartner for the first time experienced in physical space; he sky-jumped from the height of estimated 39,000 m, proving that one can actually see the Earth as simulated by Google Earth. Humanity gained a new glance, an overview towards the territory of Earth. This paper argues that this transformation of the nature of the vista provokes the emergence of new modes of perception, cognition and experience of space and place specific to the emerging era (thus provoking new modes of production of space). This paper raises questions regarding the case of the Google Earth program and it’s impact on spatial perception in the context of architectural discourse.International Academic Conference on Places and Technologies, Places and Technologies 2014, will be the first conference organized by Univerisity of Belgrade – Faculty of Architecture, Professional association Urban Laboratory and University of Belgrade – Faculty of Philosophy

Šta radi reforma? O pretvaranju tamnice u zatvor

    No full text
The paper examines the meanings of the notion of reform. Is reform an act or a process; what is an object of reform and how is it performed; is the scope of its performance limited or does it permeate deeper social structures? The approach to reform in this paper is genealogical, through the analysis of the processes of institutionalisation of the prison in Great Britain in 18th and 19th centuries. Although the elaboration of these processes revolves around a particular era and place, this micro-sample gives rise to conclusions that surpass historically conditioned analysis. The aim of this paper is to show that reform has to be understood as an expression and effect of a profound transformation of the political, as well as the complex, multilateral and dispersive process which penetrates into and alters extant social relations.

    No full text
