Struktura socijalnih stavova u adolescenciji i nadolazećem odraslom dobu

    No full text

History and Ideology on the TV Screen – The Case of Serbian TV Series Ravna Gora

    No full text
In this presentation we will analyze how the TV Show “Ravna Gora” constructs historical events and actors. Our main theoretical inspiration will be Stuart Halls understanding of ideology as a “code” which structures discourses and texts. Therefore, by analyzing “Ravna Gora” as a text we will set out to find an underlying code that structures various signifying chains and narrative elements within it. Our analysis will consist of a syntagmatic and a paradigmatic dimension. In the syntagmatic dimension we will use narrative analysis to explore how various character behaviors, transformations, relations as well as events through the duration of the series form a coherent structure. In the paradigmatic dimension we will apply the semiotic method to analyze various symbolic elements that appear throughout the series. By combining these two dimensions we seek to find a “deep structure” within the text of the series which structures the way various characters and events are symbolized and contrasted with each other. We will conclude our presentation by relating the findings of our analysis to the broader context of cultural changes in the serbian post-socialist transformation in which “Ravna Gora” appeared

Humor styles in Serbia: an evaluation of the Humor Styles Questionnaire and correlations with social attitudes

    No full text
Humor styles refer to the everyday use of humor, varying across self-enhancing, affiliative, aggressive and self-defeating styles, entailing differences in focus on the self vs. other as well as between being adaptive vs. maladaptive. We validated the instrument devised to capture these differences, the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ; Martin et al., Journal of Research in Personality 37:48–75, 2003), in a novel cultural context. Furthermore, we investigated the relations of humor styles with various aspects of social orientations and attitudes, to widen the understanding of the correlates. Our study showed that the suggested four-factor structure reproduces reasonably well in the Serbian context, with some notable exceptions. Humor styles were meaningfully related to basic social connectedness of the individual (loneliness and self-esteem) as well as the wider social orientations and attitudes (their value orientations, social dominance orientation, and ethnocentrism). The self-defeating humor style was reflective of a more negative view of oneself and subordination to the group while the aggressive humor style indicated endorsement of dominance within the in-group over other groups. We discuss the cross-cultural validity of the instrument and how the findings contribute to a wider positioning of the humor styles within the domain of social-psychological variables

Alternative Ways to Mental Health: Exploring Psychological Determinants of Preference for CAM Treatments

    No full text
Research suggests a trend toward an increased interest in CAM, complementary and alternative therapies for treating mental health problems, which is paralleled by a relatively favorable attitude of mental health professionals. This study explored psychological predictors of attitude toward CAM therapies: frustration tolerance (measured by the 28-item Frustration Discomfort Scale), self-esteem (measured by the 16-item Revised Version of the Self-Liking/Self-Competence Scale), cognitive styles (measured by REI Scale-short version) and irrational health beliefs (measured by CAM Health Belief Questionnaire – CHBQ). Participants (N = 294) reacted to vignettes describing Bach flower remedies and neuro-linguistic programming to indi-cate their attitude toward CAM. CAM health beliefs (e.g., belief that health is a balance of life forces) and self-esteem positively predicted attitude toward CAM, while the rational style of thinking was a negative predictor. As suggested by mediation analysis, the intuitive thinking style affected the attitude toward CAM via an increase in CAM beliefs. We discuss the implications of our findings for encouraging rational decision-making when seeking help with mental health problems

Two Faces of Mystification: The Representation of the Holocaust in Arnold Schoenberg's A Survivor from Warsaw and Steve Reich's Different Trains

    No full text
The paper discusses the approaches of different media to Holocaust (re)presentation, with special reference to art music in the 20th century. Following the classification proposed by Michael Rothberg on two possible perspectives for representing the Holocaust: realistic and anti-realist (2000), we analyse two compositions: Arnold Schoenberg’s A Survivor From Warsaw (1947) and Steve Reich’s Different Trains (1988). The aim of the paper is to point out how artistic music reflects and participates in the dominant historical and contemporary discourses of Holocaust representation, especially the discourses of “heroism” and “non-representability”

Is there any Basis for Talking about Post-Truth Regime?

The paper deals with the (im)possibilities of justifying the discourse of „post-truth“. Its first part is dedicated to detection and understanding what (at all) one talks about when they use the newly coined term „post-truth“, as well as to the efforts to locate where that talking comes from: what social state it intends to describe and what social change it diagnoses or advocates for. In the central part of the paper, with references to the works of Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Jayson Harsin, the conception according to which we moved from the „truth regime“ to the „post-truth regime“, and thus from the „disciplinary society“ to the „society of control“, is presented and problematized. The final part of the paper emphasizes the dimension of the social status of truth and science. Having them in mind, the author believes that one cannot speak of an epochal novelty that allegedly occurs with their withdrawal at the expense of post-truth and alternative science, but of raising awareness of one relatively stable historical constant. On the other hand, the author points out that changes in the production and placement of information, as well as the professionalization of public communication based on service sciences, in a crucial way testify to its contemporary variant
