Profile Capital: Introducing the Theory of Profilicity into the Critique of Neoliberal Domination

    No full text
The critique of neoliberalism occupies a central place in contemporary critical theory, as neoliberalism is widely understood as the dominant mode of organizing not only the economy and politics, but also culture and everyday life. A recurring theme in such critiques is the role neoliberalism assigns to human subjectivity. Rather than simply managing institutional structures, neoliberalism aims to shape individuals from within, aligning their inner lives with its logic of self-regulation, competition, and capital accumulation. This presentation explores how neoliberal subjectivity is reproduced on social media, conceived as a key site of digital interactivity and self-performance. We turn to the theory of profilicity, developed by Moeller and D’Ambrosio, which describes a new “technology of identity”. According to this framework, individuals are expected to craft and invest in profiles – projected versions of the self continuously judged by an anonymous “general peer”. Social media becomes the primary arena where this identity logic unfolds. While Moeller and D’Ambrosio insightfully describe the dynamics of profilicity, they do not connect it to the broader ideological and economic structures of neoliberalism. Our intervention seeks to bridge this gap by reinterpreting profilicity through Michel Foucault’s concept of the neoliberal subject as an “entrepreneur of the self”, and through Lacanian psychoanalysis, which helps illuminate the mechanisms of self-objectification and desire that underpin this identity formation. We argue that profilicity offers a powerful lens for understanding how individuals internalize the logic of capital through their own subjectivity. Social media does not simply reflect neoliberal values – it actively shapes them by fostering subjects who see themselves as profiles to be optimized, displayed, and consumed. Integrating profilicity into the critique of neoliberalism thus clarifies the role of digital platforms in sustaining contemporary regimes of domination

The paper examines the sociolinguistic context and use of Serbian language varieties in Hungary. The first part presents a brief history of the community and the parameters of its ethnolinguistic vitality, which have influenced the use of the language and the construction of ethnic identity. A selective and critical review of previous dialectological, ethnolinguistic, and anthropolinguistic research follows this. The central part points to features that are important for understanding the contemporary sociolinguistic situation of Serbian varieties in Hungary, such as: use of language in public space and the media, destabilization of the nation–language relationship, multilingualism, the importance of language maintenance in interethnic marriages, and the status of Serbian varieties in minority and national culture. Finally, the perspectives for the maintenance and revitalization of Serbian are considered, along with recommendations for further research

An Agent‑Based Simulation of Politicized Topics Using Large Language Models: Algorithmic Personalization and Polarization on Social Media

    No full text
Digital platforms now act as the primary environments for public discourse, where recommender systems shape visibility, emotion, and interpretation. This study introduces the Recommender Systems LLMs Playground (RecSysLLMsP), a simulation framework designed to examine how algorithmic personalization interacts with language generation to influence engagement and polarization. The research provides a reproducible and transparent environment for testing algorithmic effects on collective reasoning, which is an issue central to democratic communication. The study employs a one‑hundred‑agent simulation grounded in psychometric and demographic data from Serbian social media users. Agents interact through five stages of progressively personalized content feeds mediated by LLM‑generated posts. Quantitative metrics such as engagement intensity, network modularity, sentiment variance and qualitative linguistic validation are used to assess behavioral and structural change. Results reveal that moderate personalization maximizes engagement, while full personalization reduces diversity and amplifies both structural and affective polarization (Q = 0.22 → 0.68). LLM‑based agents successfully reproduce realistic patterns of emotional contagion and ideological clustering. The implications extend to computational social science and policy. Simulation‑based experimentation can inform ethical recommender design and algorithmic governance. Limitations concern the absence of genuine human cognition. Thus, findings indicate systemic tendencies rather than behavioral prediction. Future research should integrate real‑world datasets, multilingual testing, and policy‑driven intervention modeling to further calibrate this digital “laboratory” for exploring AI‑mediated communication

„Colony“ as Glue? Postcolonial Framing in Present-Day Serbia and Its Political Implications

    No full text
References to Serbia as a colony have recently gained prominence in public discourse, especially after the protests against the Rio Tinto’s lithium mining project, which catalyzed the proliferation of the “colony” trope. Although the use of postcolonial framing, even in the absence of a history of formal colonization, has lately become widespread across postsocialist Eastern and Central Europe, in Serbia it is characteristically employed by actors spanning diverse segments of the political spectrum. In this presentation, our aim will be twofold. First, on the basis of a corpus made up by 62 media pieces mentioning “colony” and “colonialism”, we will seek to identify different meanings ascribed to the concept of colony, by focusing on three key themes: manifestations of Serbia’s colonial status, perceived colonizers (EU, US, Russia, China), and the actors using this rhetoric. Second, we will examine the connection between the different ways “colony” is articulated and the various demands for inclusion and exclusion within the political community. Our analysis will be driven by Jeffrey Alexander’s civil sphere theory. The main research question is whether the use of the “colony” trope, in addition to being used to label, exclude, and create divisions, can also serve as an impetus for civil repair. Specifically, if “colony” represents a polluting symbol of the loss of self-governance, can it also spark a return to autonomy as collective value and, by joining different constituencies together, inspire the fight for civil values and social justice

T his paper explores the semantic, philosophical, and institutional dimensions of vic tory as both an end goal and a regulatory principle shaping modern social, political, and military life. Starting from Carl von Clausewitz’s and Soviet doctrinal under standings of victory, the study examines how the notion functions as a meta- institutional protocol that structures antagonism, legitimizes authority, and defines social order. Through a dialogue with Carl Schmitt, Erich Kaufmann, and contempo rary military theorists, the paper reconstructs the genealogy of victory as an exclu sionary and asymmetrical act

This paper represents the results of a research conducted between 2022 and 2023 within a project between two private universities: Singidunum University in Serbia, and CY Cergy Paris University in France. The aim of the research is to investigate and analyze the attitudes of teaching and non-teaching staff at Singidunum University towards gender equality and gender quotas in this higher education institution, as the new Law on Gender Equality has been adopted. The research results show that the academic community at Singidunum University accepts gender equality as a concept which is necessary in contemporary society, but they do not accept gender quotas as a tool for reaching gender equality in higher education institutions. The aim of this paper is to present the results of the research which can be beneficial in the future decision-making process related to gender equality and higher education.

Devijacije u tami. O slepim mišima, veteranima, vizionarima i filozofima

    No full text
This article explores psychosis not primarily as a medical disorder but as a phenomenon that calls for understanding rather than explanation. While psychiatry and neuroscience focus on causal, biological or psychological mechanisms, such approaches fail to capture what it is like to be psychotic. Through three figures of thought – the bat, the veteran, and the visionary – I aim to develop a plural, imaginative, and philosophical understanding of madness. Drawing on Thomas Nagel’s notion of the “single point of view,” the bat symbolizes the limits of empathy and the need for narrative multiplicity. The veteran reveals the moral and social dimensions of trauma and conflict underlying psychosis. The visionary represents the blurred boundary between madness, spirituality, and insight. The final sections argue that psychosis involves “perplexity” and “hyperreflection,” concepts closely related to philosophical wonder and reflection. Madness, then, can be viewed as a proto- or hyper-philosophy: a radical questioning of meaning and reality. This article concludes that psychiatry requires not only doctors and patients but also sages – philosophers – to engage madness as a “livable deviation in the dark.
