    Get PDF
The purpose was to understand how the ambidexterity degree (exploration + exploitation actions) can explain the variance of the number of students. As theoretical foundation, it was considered the arguments proposed by March (1991) and Tuschman and O’Reilly III (2004) about organizational ambidexterity (balance of incremental and radical innovation initiatives). About the methodology, a quantitative approach was used, and the sample counted with 79 executives of higher education institutions (HEI). For data analysis, descriptive statistics, chi-square, cluster analysis, correlation analysis and multiple linear regression were used. As outcome, the confirmation that ambidexterity can explain variance of the number of students in 20.6%. However, it was also observed that it cannot explain variation of the main index of teaching quality: General Course Index. Finally, there is a proposition of a maturity degree for ambidexterity, subdivided into four levels: I - Embryonic, II - Structured, III - Semi-developed and IV - Developed

The article describes the social technology’s role in the TCM attractiveness from the retailers’ perspective. The exploratory research experience in Sweden during different periods between 2012 and 2016 includes contributions of the literature, direct interviews and analysis of the TCM’s websites. The state-of-the-art of social commerce perception by managers and retailers is defined, and specific evidences are given through research. An interpretation of the concept of attractiveness of the TCM is presented to explain how social commerce could affect this property. Dissonance between opinions and statements of TCM stakeholders are discussed, and the will to use social commerce to increase opportunities for TCM is, in general, declared by retailers, but it is not realized in practice in management activities. A comparative empirical exploration between different countries could be conducted in future. This paper explores the actual situation in the use of website sustaining that the social commerce and the social networks are able to go beyond the supporting of commerce activity and they are able to support the TCM attractiveness and place attachment

Innovation studies in Latin America: a bibliometric analysis

    Get PDF
The article’s objective is to present a quantitative overview of innovation studies developed by Latin American authors. We adopted the bibliometric method to build the study, with data originated from the Scopus and Web of Science databases, covering 30 years (1987-2016). From this data analysis, we found out that innovation studies in Latin America, for long period, did not present a significant volume. However, this scenario has undergone changes, such as: (1) the growth in the volume of publications of the countries; (2) the relevant collaboration between Latin American countries and the United States, Spain, and the United Kingdom; (3) and relevant presence of Brazilian authors and universities as the most productive in the region. Despite these changes, Latin America still falls behind the reference countries in the area, accounting for 2.75% of the worldwide bibliographic production on innovation in the databases analyzed

Defining functional roles for research institutions in helix innovation networks

    Get PDF
This paper presents an empirically grounded case-based analysis of quadruple helix innovation networks. On the basis of qualitative interviews with representatives of 16 heterogeneous networks, we investigate the functional network roles of 172 actors from the fields of academic research, business, government and society. In this article we focus on universities and research and technology organisations, which face the challenge of having to redefine their functional roles and unique value in the face of increased diversification of knowledge sources within current quadruple helix innovation systems. We delineate both existing and potential future roles for academic actors using a typology of functional roles, and present the challenges research establishments must meet in order to fulfil these roles successfully. Finally, we outline the implications of this analysis for the strategic positioning of research institutions, so as to ensure the future inclusion of their innovative capacity in collaborative innovation networks

Biodiesel in Brazil: Agricultural R&D at Petrobras Biocombustível

    Get PDF
The expansion of the use of biofuels is based on the implementation of public policies to support production, technological development and the market. In Brazil, the National Program for the Production and Use of Biodiesel (PNPB) seeks to articulate these incentives and attract private initiative in promoting sustainable production. Investigating the business actions for the development of new technologies in the face of public stimulation motivates this article that aims to analyze the Research and Development (R&D) strategies of Petrobras Biocombustível in the production of biodiesel. The case study is based on the theoretical arguments of the Entrepreneur State and on a case study accompanied by a qualitative analysis. The results indicate that the formation of agricultural research networks favored the construction of knowledge, research infrastructures and training of people, but did not innovated the production of biodiesel

Title: Relationship between risk and innovation: Risk perception by project managers In an environment of uncertainty in the organizations, risk aversion from decision makers can be a rational behaviour, but reduces the ability to obtain innovate and then risk of failure increases. This paper analyses under an exploratory approach, the perception of the risk identified by Mexican innovation project leaders, in multinational companies. The results obtained from thirteen cases indicate that, there is no risk aversion and that the association between a higher level of profitability and greater risk is recognized, but that simple or intuitive methods are often used to manage risk. This highlights the need to train managers and executives with a wide risk and risk management overview, innovation and its relationship

Overview Case Analysis Applied to Evaluate Technology Transfer Projects of a Mexican Public University

    Get PDF
The objective of this work is to propose a rapid methodology called Overview Case Analysis (OCA) to analyze in a synthetic and simple form, the tremendous amount of information that is created through the years in a technology transfer project. Using OCA analyst can rapidly detect the project highlights along its critical path of the technology transfer project. At the end of the evaluation process, qualification of the project performance is performed using a coarse scale to measure the technology transfer capacity of the participant organizations. To prove the methodology proposed, we explore the economic and social impact results of some technology transfer projects developed by academic groups of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM, by its Spanish acronym). The conclusion is that in order to have a successful TTP, at least three conditions are necessary: (a) the project must be handled by an efficient technology transfer team (T3); (b) the technology transferred must be mature; and (c) the technology transferred must have economic and social impacts for the final organization or other users inside the receiver country
