Does Investment in Advertising Boost Economic Performance? Firm-Level Evidence of Ecuadorian Manufacturing

    Get PDF
This paper examines how the firm´s advertising investments are related to different measures of economic and productivity performance during 2007 – 2017 in Ecuadorian manufacturing. Particularly, this study analyzes if firms that have advertising investments have better economic and productivity performance compare to non-advertising investment firms. In addition, this looks for evidence on how the different advertising strategies may affect productivity and gross revenue in both advertising and non-advertising firms. For this, this paper estimates the total factor productivity (TFP) at firm-level using a semi-parametric approach to reduce the simultaneous and endogeneity problems in the selection of inputs. The estimation results show that manufacturing firms which invest in advertising have an Advertising Premia on economic and productivity indicators, this premia is higher on economic outcomes. Also, the findings are that continuing advertising investment strategy firms have higher TFP, labor productivity, and gross revenue than exiting advertising investment firms, suggesting self-selection in the exit side of the market but not in the entry side of the market. Finally, the study finds that after firms entering to invest in advertising, firms experience an improvement on TFP, labor productivity, and gross revenue growth, which are in favor of learning by advertising hypothesis

The Impact of Cooperation on Business Innovation in Developing Countries: Evidence from Chile Latin America

    Get PDF
There is abundant empirical evidence supporting the relationship between cooperation and innovative entrepreneurial activity, but the conversation continues to be limited to the context of developing countries. This study contributes to the academic debate on this topic with an empirical evaluation of the effect of cooperation networks on innovation, using Chile in Latin America as a case study. Furthermore, while previous studies mainly refer to technological innovations in a particular industrial sector, in this paper we will build an innovation measurement system that incorporates both technological and non-technological activities among diverse industrial sectors. Upon applying cross-sectional data from a national survey on innovation in a developing firm from two different years to a zero-inflated negative binomial regression, we found that a business that reports on cooperation conducts more innovative activities per year compared to one that does not. The type of agent that a business cooperates with is also relevant in this context; other businesses, clients, and consultants showed stronger and more stable results than other types of agents. This evidence is relevant as it presents new information about the importance of the type of agent that a business cooperates with in the context of developing countries

How Innovation Influences on Export Performance: A Configuration Approach for Emerging Economies

    Get PDF
This study examines innovation on export performance under competitive strategies, institutional factors and marketing capability. We collect the information from 201 firms through surveys of four countries: Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Peru, and we use a novel method approach (qualitative comparative analysis) to analyze how these antecedents combined to lead to the export performance. We found that the technological capability degree depends on the export market. In developed markets, firms need low technological capability, contrary when firms export to developing countries firms needs to develop high degree of technological capability. Besides, the technological capability needs to configure with implementation of strategies depends on institutional factors and marketing capability

Institutionalization of Research Administration in Brazil: Some Evidences

    Get PDF
The arrangement of different research institutions and partners, including public funding agencies, is mandatory to address the current science, technology and innovation challenges. The access and maintenance of research collaboration networks require high level of competence and efficiency by the organizations. The multidisciplinary and multi-institutional research projects require management and administrative activities to achieve project goals in the expected time and cost, and the Research Administration (RA) professionals can be an important facilitator in the implementation of a governance strategy. The two case studies presented in this article illustrates the creation of RA institutional elements in Brazil that is evidence of the willingness to face the bureaucracy and practical consequences of the disconnection of science, technology and innovation policy actors. The searching for more efficiency and impacting results is directly related to the bureaucracy and transaction costs minimization and the maturity of the STI institutional and governance structure

Transferencia Tecnológica en Universidades Chilenas: El Caso de la Universidad de Concepción

    Get PDF

Industry Platforms as Facilitators of Disruptive IoT Innovations

    Get PDF
We undertake an inductive study of four firms developing industry platforms upon which potentially disruptive IoT products and services are developed by external firms. Our results indicate there to be four types of industry platform (generalist, specialist, technology-centric, and industry-centric), each facilitating a unique mode of disruptive change. We propose that technology-centric platforms are more likely to facilitate business model disruptions, while industry-centric platforms are more likely to facilitate technological disruptions. Generalist industry platforms, by con-trast, are able to facilitate both business model and technological disruptions, given the freedom they allow IoT firms to build their product and service solutions

    A Hub-based University Innovation Model

    Get PDF
This article uses a conceptual approach to propose an innovation model for regional universities. It demonstrates that the traditional university encounters several obstacles that hinder its full integration into the development of its respective region and explains why currently known models cannot adapt to regions that have deficient relationships with the government and lack an entrepreneurial base. The new model is based on a structure composed of units called “innovation hubs” and incorporates social innovation, thus permitting the university to become integrated into the regional innovation ecosystems. The Magdalena University in Colombia was used as a reference in developing the model

Framework Proposal for Open Innovation Implementation in SMEs of Regional Innovation Systems

    Get PDF
In the literature of Open Innovation (OI), some specific themes, such as elaboration of methods, strategies and systematized processes of implementation are still little discussed. In attempted to fill this research gap, this study aims to present a proposal for a framework for the implementation of OI in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises of Regional Innovation Systems (RIS). As such, it can support the theoretical development related to OI implementation methods and tools. The constructivist method was used in the development of the framework, which represents the Implementation Process of OI (IPOI), consisting of 5 stages: (i) diagnosis of RIS; (ii) diagnosis of the enterprise; (iii) preparation; (iv) implementation; and (v) monitoring and control. The unfolding of this process in stages and measurement systems allows us to understand the elements and Critical Success Factors (CSF) that interfere in the improvement of the capacity of innovation in SMEs inserted in RIS

Derramas Tecnológicas Inversas y Desempeño Innovador: El Caso de las Empresas Transnacionales Mexicanas, 1994-2015

    Get PDF
The expansion of transnational corporations from emerging economies during the last decades has generated a great interest among scholars in analyzing the presence of reverse technology spillovers. This kind of spillovers are generated when transnational corporations use outward FDI to attract and transfer knowledge and technology from abroad to improve their own technology capabilities in their home countries. The aim of this research is to analyze the presence and impact of reverse technology spillovers on Mexican transnational firm performance innovation. Using panel data Tobit econometric models of 13 Mexican multinational corporations over the period of 1994-2015, results confirm the presence of reverse technology spillovers that could be attracted through Mexican firms’ absorptive capabilities. The paper concludes discussing the need of implementing adequate public policies to support the internationalization of the Mexican multinational corporations
