This article demonstrates how the innovation capacity in the public sector, such as in elderly care, can be recognized and enhanced if the daily experiences of the employees, i.e. what women are doing in their everyday work, are taken into account. Women working in elderly care encounter a number of challenges and have different strategies for solving them in order to provide good care for the elderly. These solutions are often non-technical and non-digital and, therefore, not regarded as “good ideas” and innovations. Asking for “ideas” and “potential innovations” prevents the staff from identifying these innovative solutions since they regard them as nothing special. However, when the point of departure is taken in everyday experiences, it is possible to challenge the male-dominated discourse on innovation and capture innovations. Consequently, this article suggests that innovation activities and innovation models in for instance the public sector should address and be grounded in experiences rather than “ideas”

Facing the challenges of the 21st century, into the agricultural sector have been designing strategies focused on the management of ecosystem resources, risk management associated with crops and the promotion of sustainable growth of agricultural communities. These strategies have been configured considering functional and competitive levels for open agricultural production systems, and usually based on low-cost technologies such that Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN), Internet of Things (IoT), Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV), Cloud Computing, and Computational Algorithms. This approach allows the configuration, planning, and implementation of technological strategies for the agricultural sector, impacting in a positive way, generating higher production levels and intensive production cycles to strengthen the smallholder farmers

The innovation process and the generation of sustainable competitive advantage are permanently on the agenda in technology management. According to Teece (2007), one way to achieve a competitive advantage is to develop dynamic capabilities, a process in which the author identifies three moments: i) to perceive and shape opportunities and threats (sensing), ii) to grasp the opportunities (seizing), iii) to increase, to combine, to secure and, when necessary, to reconfigure the tangible and intangible assets. The aim of this paper is to investigate how the strategic internal changes were introduced to influence on developing the innovation capability in order to sustain and expand the competitive advantages of the firm. To do so, a case study was carried out in a firm that work within the furniture sector more than 30 years and took decision to increase its competitive advantage by investing in product design, what created conditions for the development of new capabilities. Interviews were conducted using questions that allowed the respondents to freely express their experiences and perceptions about the changes that have occurred in their sectors as a result of this process and was possible to identify the intensity of reconfigurations in capabilities that resulted from the creation of the Design Center

Empirical Literature on the Business Pitch: Classes, Critiques and Future Trends

    Get PDF
The growing importance of entrepreneurship and innovation for economic growth has propitiated a discursive genre that nowadays is almost omnipresent, i.e., the pitch. As with other emerging genres used in professional settings (e.g., selling presentations, business plans, etc.), several instructional discourses regarding the pitch have come out in the form of manuals and courses offering training on “how to make a pitch more powerful”. Empirical research, however, is less common. The aim of this paper is to qualitatively review and sort out the existing empirical research on the pitch. For this, three classifying categories are proposed according to its reception (mainly by investors), the focus on discursive features, and its evolution. Finally, some critiques to the empirical research on the pitch and a description of some future trends on the field are provided. This work may be useful for professionals interested in innovation and entrepreneurship, areas in which this emerging discourse broadly circulates

Technology Management: Corporate-Startup Co-Location and How to Measure the Effects

    Get PDF
Rapid technological developments make firms favor the creation of new approaches to technology management. Startups can offer large firms access to new technologies and the emphasis on corporate-startup collaboration has therefore reached a new level. Many models exist and co-location is one of these. While co-location in the context of clusters and innovation systems has been studied in previous literature, research on corporate-startup co-location is very limited. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the broader phenomenon of business co-location and based on this review, suggest a framework and metrics to evaluate the effects of corporate-startup co-location. The paper originates from earlier conducted studies on corporate-startup collaboration models. For this paper a literature review on the broader phenomenon of business co-location is conducted. The theoretical contribution is a proposed multi-stakeholder framework and metrics for evaluating the effects of corporate-startup co-location

The purpose of this study is to understand innovation of startups operating in a niche market.  Through a review of previous research works, a conceptual model and propositions are developed, where illustration of a company case is used to exemplify this model. It reveals that a research gap exists regarding startups in a niche market with dynamic capabilities and breakthrough innovations as a source of success. This study reflects on the potential relationship between dynamic capabilities and breakthrough innovation of a startup and its subsequent effect on the performance of the startup in a niche market. It has proposed that dynamic capabilities work as a foundation for startup to develop a breakthrough innovation. It also proposed that in a niche market, both core competency and industrial network are crucial for a startup to scaleup, where breakthrough innovation works as a pathway to acquire consumer acceptance

The transfer of knowledge and technology from universities contributes to regional development and favors innovation. The objective of this paper is to propose a model for the selection of transfer strategies adapted to the contextual characteristics of Higher Education Institutions of Colombia. For this purpose, a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) was performed, by which the combination of background conditions that generate an output is identified. The performance measure was the number of invention patents granted and the empirical application considered 184 Higher Education Institutions of Colombia. The results of the study identified ten strategic configurations that suggest different alternatives to potentiate protection through transfer mechanisms and highlights “productivity” and “innovation by territorial unit” as the best predictor of patents.

Innovation Models in Food Industry: A Review of The Literature: Innovation models in food industry

    No full text
Innovation is considered as one of the main elements of a company success. In recent years, it has assumed a relevant role also in the food industry that was generally defined as a rather mature and slow-going sector. The aim of this paper is to analyse the innovation models applied to the food industry and to carry out a systematic review of the literature. In particular, we overview the most relevant innovation models and identify the main thematic areas discussed in the period from 2016 to 2020. We also provide recommendations for future research directions

Organizational Innovation and Tech Innovation Persistence

    Get PDF
In developing economies, little is invested in research and development. Therefore, it is proposed that lower-tech firms develop their absorptive capacity and be linked through market and institutional networks to achieve technological innovation persistence. This study uses a multinomial logistics model applied to a sample of Peruvian manufacturing firms, concluding that there is an impact on product and process innovation persistence. Thus, executives can emphasize organizational innovation and absorptive capacity as means to achieve product innovation in developing countries. Moreover, firms should to prioritize the relationships with the market and institutions to achieve a better good or service
