Encapsulation of curcumin loaded chitosan nanoparticle within poly (ε-caprolactone) and gelatin fiber mat for wound healing and layered dermal reconstitution
Hybrid electrospun fiber containing bioactive molecules, which offer the ability to deliver the cells into the wound bed, will help to achieve a high therapeutic effect. In this study, an electrospun polycaperlactone (PCL) and gelatin (Gela) scaffold containing curcumin loaded chitosan nanoparticle (NCs/Cur) was used to evaluate in vivo wound healing ability of the fabricated scaffolds. The electrospun hybrid scaffold seeded with human endometrial stem cells (EnSCs) showed desirable biocompatibility with the host immune system and wound healing ability in a full-thickness excisional animal model. The constructs were characterized for structural, mechanical and biochemical properties. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed all typical absorption characteristics of PCL and Gela polymers as well as NCs and Cur. The results showed the perfect contact angle, wettability and degradability of hybrid fiber scaffolds with the good mechanical and structural characteristics including shape uniformity, pore size and porosity. The cell attachment and proliferation on the PCL/Gela/NCs/Cur was higher than PCL and PCL/Gela scaffolds. In term of the capability of hybrid scaffold and EnSCs in histological analysis, this novel tissue-engineered construct could be suggested as a skin substitute to repair injured skin and regenerative medicine application

Ozone-assisted photocatalytic degradation of gaseous toluene from waste air stream using silica-functionalized graphene oxide/ZnO coated on fiberglass: performance, intermediates, and mechanistic pathways
The present study focused on the potential of an ozone-assisted photocatalytic process using the catalyst silica-functionalized graphene oxide/ZnO coated on fiberglass (Si-GO/ZnO-FG) in the removal of toluene from waste air stream. Here, a comparative examination was performed in terms of toluene removal efficiency in the photocatalytic process (UV/Si-GO/ZnO-FG) and photocatalytic ozonation (O3/UV/Si-GO/ZnO-FG). The gaseous intermediates resulting from degradation of toluene by different processes were analyzed using GC-MS. The results of this study indicated that with the addition of ozone to the UV/Si-GO/ZnO-FG process, toluene removal increased significantly from 76.18 to 87.8%. The reason for this incremental efficiency can be explained by the fact that with the addition of ozone, the production rate and the extent of hydroxyl radical (OH•) production grow significantly; thereby, more pathways are developed for toluene degradation. The major byproducts in toluene oxidation by photocatalytic and photocatalytic ozonation processes include formic acid, acetic acid, benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, p-cresol, hydroquinone, and benzoic acid. Given the intermediates and the dominant oxidants detected in the aforementioned process, the possible toluene degradation pathway by the utilized process was suggested
Distribution and health risk assessment of organochlorine pesticides in agricultural soils of the Aghili plain, Southwest Iran
Organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) are a well-known group of persistent man-made chemicals. In the present study, 55 agricultural soil samples were collected from the Aghili plain and analyzed for 20 OCPs with the aim of determining contamination profiles, spatial distribution, influencing factors and carcinogenic risks. Among different OCPs, only aldrin, dieldrin, 4,4-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene, and 4,4-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane were detected. The other OCPs dosages were lower than the detection limit in all samples. The results of cancer risk assessment demonstrated no carcinogenic risks to an exposed population
Health risk of phthalates in water environment: Occurrence in water resources, bottled water, and tap water, and burden of disease from exposure through drinking water in tehran, Iran
Occurrence of phthalates in water resources, bottled water, and tap water, and health risk of exposure to the phthalates through drinking water in Tehran, Iran, 2018 were studied. The six phthalates with the most health and environmental concerns, including di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), butyl benzyl phthalate (BBP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DBP), diethyl phthalate (DEP), dimethyl phthalate (DMP), and di-n-octyl phthalate (DNOP) were monitored in drinking water and water resources. The average levels (±standard deviation: SD) of the total phthalates in drinking water from the water distribution system, bottled water, surface waters, and ground waters were determined to be 0.76 ± 0.19, 0.96 ± 0.10, 1.06 ± 0.23, and 0.77 ± 0.06 μg/L, respectively. The dominant compounds in the phthalates were DMP and DEHP causing a contribution to the total phthalate levels higher than 60% in all the water sources. The phthalate levels of drinking water significantly increased by contact of hot water with disposable plastic and paper cups and by sunlight exposure of bottled water (p value < 0.05). The hazard quotients (HQs) of DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DEP for all ages both sexes combined were determined to be 1.56 × 10−4, 1.01 × 10−5, 1.80 × 10−5, and 1.29 × 10−6, respectively that were much lower than the boundary value of 1.0. The disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and DALY rate (per 100,000 people) attributable to DEHP intake through drinking water for all ages both sexes combined were estimated to be 6.385 (uncertainty interval: UI 95% 1.892 to 22.133), and 0.073 (0.022–0.255), respectively. The proportion of mortality in the attributable DALYs was over 96%. The attributable DALY rate exhibited no significant difference by sex, but was considerably affected by age in a manner that the DALY rates ranged from 0.052 (0.015–0.175) in the age group 65 y plus to 0.099 (0.026–0.304) in the age group 5 to 9 y. Both the carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks of the phthalates in drinking water were considered to be very low. The results can also be of importance in terms of developing frameworks to expand the domain of burden of disease study to the other environmental risks
Significance of microalbuminuria in predicting silent myocardial ischemia in patients with type 2 diabetes using myocardial perfusion imaging
Objectives: In light of increased risk of cardiovascular events and the poor prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients and also with respect to the importance of early diagnosis of CAD in this status, the study was aimed to assess the importance of microalbuminuria in predicting silent myocardial ischemia (SMI) in patients with type 2 diabetes using myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI). Methods: This study included 120 patients with diabetes type 2, but without previously known CAD or any cardiac symptoms that were stratified into two groups based on presence/absence of microalbuminuria. All participants underwent CAD evaluation using gated myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (MPS) imaging. Other clinical and laboratory indices were also recorded. Results: Studied population consisted of 84 males (70%) and 36 females (30%), totally 120 patients with mean age of 58.61±9.90). In total, asymptomatic ischemia was detected in 78 (65%) of the included diabetic patients. Stress induced ischemia was found in 56 patients (87.5%) of albumin+ (Alb) group and in 22 patients (39.3%) of Alb-group. The frequency of stress induced ischemia was 10.81 times higher in the patients with microalbuminuria compared to Alb-ones [p0.05). Conclusion: The current study showed that abnormal MPI findings are significantly more common in diabetic patients with microalbuminuria. With respect to low cost and availability of urine Alb detection tests, it might be as a biomarker for prediction of SMI in diabetic population. © 2019 by Turkish Society of Nuclear Medicine Molecular Imaging and Radionuclide Therapy published by Galenos Yayınevi
Determinants of effective nurse-patient communication based on the health action process approach in Yazd hospitals
Nurse-patient communication is one of the most important care relationships that affects the treatment process. The health action process approach (HAPA) has been used to explain a number of behaviors. However, this approach has not been used to explain nurse-patient communication. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate effective nurse-patient communication using this approach. In this cross-sectional study, 300 nurses from public hospitals in the center of Iran were enrolled in the study. A researcher-developed questionnaire was used to measure the HAPA constructs. The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation coefficient and one-way analysis of variance with least significant difference (LSD) post hoc tests in SPSS as well as structural equation modeling using AMOUS software. In the motivation phase, risk perception, outcome expectancies and task self-efficacy predicted 19% of variance in intention to communicate effectively. In the volitional phase, planning and action self-efficacy predicted 22% of variance in effective communication. The scores of HAPA constructs were different depending on the levels of effective communication. The model can serve as a reference framework to promote effective nurse-patient communication
Health literacy, awareness and self-efficacy among cardiovascular patients visiting medical centers of Shahr-e Kord
Introduction: Considering the importance of self-efficacy and since inadequate health literacy can be a serious barrier to the participation and ultimately affect the health of patients. The present research aimed to study the health literacy of cardiovascular patients and its relationship with awareness and self-efficacy. Methods: This research was a descriptive and cross-sectional study which was conducted on 138 cardiovascular patients visiting medical centers of Shahr-e Kord in 2016. The participants were selected using simple random sampling. To assess the health literacy of the participants, TOFHLA was used. The self-efficacy standard questionnaire was applied to measure the self-efficacy of participants. The obtained data were statistically analyzed using descriptive and analytical tests in SPSS-18. Participation in the present study was voluntary. Results: The mean age of participants was equal to 48.59±19.05. Based on the results, 64, 13 and 61 patients had an inadequate, marginal, and adequate level of health literacy, respectively. The mean score of awareness was 68.14±21.68 and the mean score of self-efficacy was obtained 37.90±32.65. There is a direct and significant relationship between awareness, self-efficacy, and health literacy (p=0.000), and awareness is a suitable predictor of health literacy. Conclusion: it is necessary to measure the health literacy and the relevant skills in patients before providing information to them in medical centers. Then, commensurate with their level of information, training programs should be planned to empower patients and increase their self-efficacy, so that they can achieve correct health information
Induction of apoptosis by extract of persian gulf marine mollusk, turbo coronatus through the ROS-mediated mitochondrial targeting on human epithelial ovarian cancer cells
Despite recent improvements in treatment, ovarian cancer is still the leading cause of death from gynaecological malignancies. Today, marine mollusks are considered as natural source of new biologically and pharmacologically active compounds by scientists and the pharmaceutical industries. The aim of this study is to investigate the selective apoptotic effects of Turbo coronatus crude extract fractions on human epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) cells and mitochondria. The cells and mitochondria were isolated from cancerous and non-cancerous ovarian tissues and exposed to IC 50 concentration of F1 fraction for evaluation of mitochondrial and cellular parameters. Our results showed that F1 fraction of T. coronatus crude extract significantly induced toxic effects only in the cancerous ovarian mitochondria, including increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, mitochondrial membrane depolarization, mitochondrial swelling, and cytochrome c release.Flow-cytometry analysis demonstrated that F1 fraction of T. coronatus progressively induced apoptosis and necrosis only on EOC but not non-cancerous cells. Cancer stem cells as a therapeutic target in bladder cancer
Bladder cancer is one of the most prevalent genitourinary cancers responsible for about 150,000 deaths per year worldwide. Currently, several treatments, such as endoscopic and open surgery, appended by local or systemic immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy are used to treat this malignancy. However, the differences in treatment outcome among patients suffering from bladder cancer are considered as one of the important challenges. In recent years, cancer stem cells, representing a population of undifferentiated cells with stem-cell like properties, have been eyed as a major culprit for the high recurrence rate in superficial papillary bladder cancer. Cancer stem cells have been reported to be resistant to conventional treatments, such as chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy, which induce selective pressure on tumoral populations resulting in selection and growth of the resistant cells. Therefore, targeting the therapeutic aspects of cancer stem cells in bladder cancer may be promising. In this study, we briefly discuss the biology of bladder cancer and then address the possible relationship between molecular biology of bladder cancer and cancer stem cells. Subsequently, the mechanisms of resistance applied by cancer stem cells against the conventional therapeutic tools, especially chemotherapy, are discussed. Moreover, by emphasizing the biomarkers described for cancer stem cells in bladder cancer, we have provided, described, and proposed targets on cancer stem cells for therapeutic interventions and, finally, reviewed some immunotargeting strategies against bladder cancer stem cells
