    Cardio-metabolic and socio-demographic risk factors associated with dependency in basic and instrumental activities of daily living among older Iranian adults: Bushehr elderly health program

    Background: Iran’s population is aging. Disability is a major public health problem for older adults, not only in Iran but all over the world. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between cardio-metabolic and socio-demographic risk factors and disability in people 60 years and older in Iran. Methods: The baseline (cross-sectional) data of 2426 samples from the Bushehr Elderly Health (BEH) program was included in the analysis. The participants were selected through multi-stage random sampling in Bushehr, southern Iran. Socio-demographic characteristics, as well as the history of diabetes and other chronic diseases, and smoking were measured using standardized questionnaires. Anthropometric measurements and laboratory tests were performed under standard conditions. Dependency was determined by the questionnaires of basic activities of daily living (BADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) using Barthel and Lawton scales respectively. Multiple logistic regression was used in the analysis. Results: Mean (Standard Deviation) of the participants’ age was 69.3 (6.4) years (range: 60 and 96 years), and 48.1% of the participants were men. After adjusting for potential confounders, being older, being female (OR (95%CI): 2.3 (1.9–2.9)), having a lower education level, a history of diabetes mellitus (OR: 1.4 (1.2–1.7)) and past smoking (OR: 1.3 (1.0–1.6)), and no physical activity (OR: 1.5 (1.2–1.9)) were significantly associated with dependency in IADL. Also, being older and female (OR: 2.4 (1.9–3.0)), having a lower education level, no physical activity (OR: 2.2 (1.6–2.9)) and daily intake of calories (OR: 0.99 (0.99–0.99)) were associated with dependency in BADL. Conclusion: Dependency in older adults can be prevented by increasing community literacy, improving physical activity, preventing and controlling diabetes mellitus, avoiding smoking, and reducing daily calorie intake

    Ibuprofen elimination from water and wastewater using sonication/ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide/zeolite-titanate photocatalyst system

    The present investigation was designed to remove ibuprofen from aqueous solutions and wastewater by activating hydrogen peroxide using ultrasonication (US)/ultraviolet (UV) radiation/zeolite-titanium. The physical-chemical properties of the photocatalyst were determined using BET, FTIR, XRD, FESEM, and EDX-mapping techniques. The titanium oxide crystal size and the catalyst BET were determined to be 4.97 nm and 39.88 m2/g, respectively. Tests were performed in a reactor (with a volume of 316 mL) located in an ultrasonic bath to intensify reactions. The synergistic impact of the components of the UV/US/H2O2/Photocatalyst system was explored. The maximum efficiency (99.58%) was obtained at H2O2 concentration of 0.05 mM, pH 5, UV power of 6 W, photo-catalyst dose of 1 g/L, and contact time of 100 min. The pH variable was more effective than the other parameters. Ions of NO3−, Cl−, and SO42− had a slightly negative effect on contaminant removal efficiency. The ibuprofen removal (based on COD) from urban water and hospital wastewater was attained 77.82% and 66.24%, respectively. The ibuprofen removal by the developed system followed the first-order kinetic. The results show that the system has high efficiency and reasonable costs (with treatment cost of 6.25 €/m3) for ibuprofen decontamination

    A salt resistant biosurfactant produced by moderately halotolerant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (AHV-KH10) and its application for bioremediation of diesel-contaminated sediment in saline environment

    A halotolerant bacterial strain was isolated from oily-contaminated sites of Persian Gulf, which characterized as Pseudomonas aeruginosa (AHV-KH10) by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. This strain was used for bioremediation of diesel-contaminated sediments. Biosurfactant production was initially screened by using oil displacement test and drop-collapse method, followed by measurement of surface tension (ST) of growth medium. Produced biosurfactant was a rhamnolipid type biosurfactant and lowered the ST to 33.4 mN/m at the given critical micelle concentration (CMC) of 75 mg/L. Addition of 3 CMC rhamnolipid, inoculums size of 15 mL, biodegradation in slurry phase and salinity level of 6% led totally to a diesel biodegradation rate of 70% for initial concentration of 1000 mg/kg after 35 days. The maximum diesel removal occurred at the salinity content of 6% indicating the moderately halo-tolerant characteristics of isolated strain. Evaluation of bacterial growth showed a biomass yield of 0.33 mg VSS/mg diesel in selected conditions. The field performance of Pseudomonas aeruginosa AHV-KH10 was proved through the removal of the TPH content in unwashed sediment, which varied from 2390 to 1875 mg/kg within four months

    Coexistence of aminoglycoside resistance genes in ctx-m-producing isolates of klebsiella pneumoniae in bushehr province, iran

    Background and Objectives: Increasing the rate of extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Klebsiella pneu-moniae has given rise to a major healthcare issue in clinical settings over the past few years. Treatment of these strains is hardly effective since the plasmid encoding ESBL may also carry other resistance genes including aminoglycosides. The current study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of ESBL-producing K. pneumoniae and investigate the coexistence of Cefoxitamase-Munich (bla ) with aminoglycoside-modifying enzyme (AME) genes, aac(3)IIa as well as aac(6′)Ib, in CTX-M CTX-M-producing K. pneumoniae isolated from patients in Bushehr province, Iran. Materials and Methods: A total of 212 K. pneumoniae isolates were collected and confirmed using polymerase chain re-action (PCR) of the malate dehydrogenase gene. Isolates were screened for production of ESBL. Phenotypic confirmatory test was performed using combined disk test. The genes encoding CTX-M groups and AME genes, aac(3)IIa and aac(6′)Ib, were investigated by PCR. Results: The ESBL phenotype was detected in 56 (26.4%) K. pneumoniae isolates. Moreover, 83.9% of ESBL-producing isolates carried the genes for CTX-M type β-lactamases, which were distributed into the two genetic groups of CTX-M-1 (97.8%)-and CTX-M-2 (2.1%)-related enzymes. Notably, among K. pneumoniae isolates containing the blaCTX-M gene, 68.08% of isolates harbored AME genes. In addition, the coexistence of bla with aac(3)-IIa and aac(6’)-Ib was observed in 46.8% of CTX-M-producing K. pneumoniae isolates. Conclusion: This study provides evidence of a high prevalence of AME genes in CTX-M-producing K. pneumoniae iso-lates; therefore, in the initial empirical treatment of infections caused by ESBL-KP in regions with such antibiotic resistance patterns, aminoglycoside combination therapy should be undertaken carefully.     A Review on the diagnostic approaches of COVID-19 infection; Features and limitations

    Detection of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in early stage is indispensible for outcome improvement and interruption of transmission chain. Clear understanding of the nature of the diagnostic tests for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and their challenges, collecting the most diagnostically valuable specimen at the right time from the right anatomic site, and interpretation of their findings is important. This review scrutinizes current challenges and interpretation of reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR), as the reference method, loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP), antibody and antigen detection, typical lung imaging characteristics and prominent abnormal changes in laboratory findings of patients with proven COVID-19, and describes how the results may vary over time. Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and sputum specimens demonstrate the highest positive rates (93% and 72 %, respectively) in molecular diagnosis of COVID-19. Alternatively, repeated RT-PCR assays can be performed; as over time, it is an increase in the likelihood of the SARS-CoV-2 being present in the nasopharynx. Combining clinical evidence with results of chest computed tomography (CT) and RT-PCR can minimize the risk of diagnostic errors. Elevated levels of interleukin 6 (IL‐6) and D-dimer are thought to be closely associated with the occurrence of severe COVID‐19 in adults, and their combined detection can serve as early factors predicting the severity of COVID‐19. Moreover, elevated acute phase proteins are associated with a poor outcome in COVID-19. Serological diagnosis also is an important tool to understand the extent of COVID-19 in the community, and to identify individuals, who are immune.     Despite extensive studies on type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), there is no definitive cure, drug, or prevention. Therefore, for developing new therapeutics, proper study models of T2DM is necessary to conduct further preclinical researches. Diabetes has been induced in animals using chemical, genetic, hormonal, antibody, viral, and surgical methods or a combination of them. Beside different approaches of diabetes induction, different animal species have been suggested. Although more than 85% of articles have proposed rat (genus Rattus) as the proper model for diabetes induction, zebrafish (Danio rerio) models of diabetes are being used more frequently in diabetes related studies. In this systematic review, we compare different aspects of available methods of inducing hyperglycemia referred as T2DM in zebrafish by utilizing a scoring system. Evaluating 26 approved models of T2DM in zebrafish, this scoring system may help researchers to compare different T2DM zebrafish models and select the best one regarding their own research theme. Eventually, glyoxalase1 (glo1−/−) knockout model of hyperglycemia achieved the highest score. In addition to assessment of hyperglycemic induction methods in zebrafish, eight most commonly proposed diabetic induction approval methods are suggested to help researchers confirm their subsequent proposed models

    Relationship between internet addiction and identity styles in bushehr university of medical sciences students

    Aims Internet addiction is excessive use of the Internet (daily more than three hours). This is social and psychological damage with severe consequences for young people, especially college students. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Internet addiction and identity styles in Bushehr University of Medical Sciences students. Instrument & Methods The present research is a descriptive correlational study. The statistical population was all students of Bushehr University of Medical Sciences. The sample included 277 students studying at Bushehr University of Medical Sciences who were selected using simple random sampling. The data were collected using demographic characteristics, the Berzonsky Identity Style Inventory, and Yang’s Internet addiction questionnaire. For analyzing data, statistical Pearson correlation, ANOVA, t-test were used by SPSS 23 statistical software. Findings The result showed that 90.2 percent of students were non-addicted, and 9.8 percent are addicted to the Internet. The average information identity is 40.29±6.65, and the avoidance identity is 27.89±6.21. The correlation between normative identity style (-0.30) and information (-.0.26) with Internet addiction in a negative direction is statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion The present study’s findings confirm the relationship between informational and normative identity styles and Internet addiction. According to the results of this study, it is necessary to develop programs such as training the Internet’s correct use at universities and filling students’ leisure time.     Opium use and the risk of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

    Scant evidence exists to support the association of opium use with head and neck cancer, limited to the larynx and oral cavity. In a multicenter case-control study—Iran Opium and Cancer study, we recruited 633 cases of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) (254 lip and oral cavity, 54 pharynx, 327 larynx and 28 other subsites within the head and neck) and 3065 frequency-matched controls from April 2016 to April 2019. Odds ratios (ORs) for opium use and 95% confidence intervals (95% CIs) were obtained using mixed-effects logistic regression because of heterogeneity among centers. The adjusted OR (95% CI) for regular opium use was 3.76 (2.96-4.79) for all HNSCC combined. Strong dose-response effects were observed by frequency or amount of use, and duration of use. Regular opium uses significantly increased the risk of HNSCC of the pharynx, larynx and other subsites within the head and neck with OR (95% CI) of 2.90 (1.40-6.02), 6.55 (4.69-9.13) and 5.95 (2.41-14.71), respectively. The observed associations were significant even among never tobacco smokers (including cigarette and water-pipe smoking). Moreover, by the multiplicative interaction scale, the effect of opium use could be varied by cigarette smoking on HNSCC, 8.16 (6.20-10.74). For the first time, the current study showed opium users have an increased risk of several anatomic subsites of HNSCC
