Commentary on ‘The perception and cognition of time in Balinese music’ by Andrew Clay McGraw
We review the paper by Andrew Clay McGraw, noting that it represents an interesting and valuable contribution to the study of music in cognition in its informed exploration of non-western musical perceptions. We raise a number of concerns about the methods used, and make suggestions as to how the issues that were empirically addressed in the paper might have been tackled in ways that would have enhanced the interpretability of its findings
Students at a UK conservatoire of music: working towards a ‘diverse employment portfolio’?
The role of chamber music in learning to perform: a case study
This paper draws on findings from the Learning to Perform project, a three-year longitudinal investigation of musical learning at a UK conservatoire. In particular, focus is placed on the role that chamber music can play in the development of musical expertise. While the conservatoire centres its curriculum on one-to-one instrumental lessons, it also offers tuition and assessment for chamber music. In this paper, we propose that chamber music may be one way in which students can “expand” their learning as well as nurturing skills that may promote their careers. We focus on the development of one wind quintet, concentrating on in-depth understanding of the opportunities or constraints that it affords learning. Using interview data, triangulated by questionnaires and observation, we track the quintet’s successes and disappointments, and the impact that the experience had on the learners involved.
The quintet emerges as a space in which students can challenge and be challenged, where they can learn deeply and where they can develop skills within and beyond music. Following a decision to be assessed as part of their degree, the group coherence begins to diminish, so that the quintet eventually disperses. We suggest that these findings have emergent implications both in terms of musical expertise and conservatoire curricula. ******* PLEASE NOTE: This article is available open access at the Official URL given below. ******

Primary music education: the misrepresentation of the ideals of curricula in research
The author starts from a historical viewpoint to suggest that, at primary level, we have tended to perpetuate a nineteenth-century notion of music education. This is evident in the selection and organisation of musical content in curriculum documents, the scope of the teacher–pupil transaction implicit in these and the assumptions about music education which underpin research on practice conducted at official policy level. In light of the introduction of the 1999 Revised Primary School Curriculum, with its change in emphasis, she notes that it is timely to reconsider the situation. Central to this is the need to challenge the notion of music as a set of delineated skills, to explore the relationship between the primary teacher and music, and to move towards a notion of research which acknowledges the richness of multiple interpretations teachers bring to the curriculum
Creating a musical world in the classroom: application of a Bourdieuan approach towards understanding teacher practice
Whilst a rationale for the content and organisation of knowledge in a standardised curriculum may be clearly articulated at official policy level, factors may come to bear on a teacher operating at a local level which may work against the successful implementation of the curriculum on the ground. Drawing on a Bourdieuan notion of cultural field, ‘habitus’ and cultural capital to examine commonality and difference in teacher practice in an Irish primary school context, the paper reports on a study which highlights the role played by formative experiences in shaping the responses of primary teachers to performance and music literacy
