'Lost expression': the curse of the urtext

    No full text
The establishment of Urtexts has been one of the great achievements of twentieth century musicology. But maybe their influence on performance has not been entirely positive: we have forgotten the quiver of expressive techniques used at the turn-of-the century (and beyond) from singers and instrumentalists which made these texts ‘expressive’ – of the performers and of the music. Going ‘above the text’ seems to have been forgotten. Maybe a ‘back to the future’ viewpoint on what we know of the detailed techniques of recorded performances from the early years of the twentieth century might inject a new spirit into interpretations of the twenty-first century. This presentation will be illustrated with copious musical examples

    Flux

    No full text
For ensemble (bass clarinet, cello, flute, piano, piccolo, and violin), duration 12 minutes. Flux was first published by BMIC New Voices and remains part of their collection. It was commissioned by New Music Players and premiered by them on 1 November 2006 at The Warehouse, London. Flux was also broadcast on BBC Radio 3 on 3 May 2008. Composer's programme note: "Flux is a fluid work with constantly changing shapes surfaces and energy. Although the physical character of the music varies widely, the raw material all stems from the same source that includes particular cells to fuse surfaces together. The work is an exploration of the sensation of physical movement in music, role-play and resonance both real and illusionary. A single line initiates enforces and resonates a series of dynamic, textural, harmonic, timbral, rhythmic and melodic structures that move in time and space with varying speeds. The line moves through and across the shapes, sliding between foreground and background.
