For clarinet and piano, duration 8 minutes. This piece was commissioned by BBC Radio 3 for Radio 3 New Generation Artist Mark Simpson. It was first performed on 10 July 2013 at the Pittville Pump Room, Cheltenham, by Mark Simpson (clarinet) and Alex Wilson (piano)

For oboe (soloist) plus piccolo, horn, trumpet in Bb, harp and bass, duration 7 minutes.
This work was written for Endymion's 'Sound Census' project, in celebration of their 30th birthday, and was premiered at King's Place, London on 3 June 2009
Brief candles
For solo clarinet in Bb, duration 5 minutes. This work was premiered on 26 October 2004 by José Luis Estellés at the Auditorio del Conservatorio Superior de Música de la Coruña. The piece comprises eight miniatures:

A book of colours
For solo piano, duration 21 minutes 30 seconds.
The five pieces which comprise 'A book of colours' were written between 1988 and 1993.

5. the thing that makes ashes.

Sparrow night
For solo oboe and chamber ensemble, duration 17 minutes. The ensemble consists of flute (doubling piccolo), clarinet in Bb (doubling Eb clarinet and bass clarinet), horn in F, piano, violin, viola, cello, and double bass. The title stems from a Chekov story cited by Raymond Carver in his final book of poetry, where terrible nights with thunder, rain, and wind are called by some people 'sparrow nights.'
