Troubled light
For orchestra, duration 21 minutes. Commissioned by the BBC and premiered at the BBC Proms on 25 July 2008 by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales conducted by Thierry Fischer. The piece has five movements: 1. the fell of dark, 2. rudhira, 3. Ellsworth, 4. Huye luna, luna, luna, 5. Mehr Licht.

For solo cello, duration 15 minutes. This work was commissioned by Birmingham Contemporary Music Group and first performed on 24 November 2003 by Ulrich Heinen at the Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival. Walking with the river's roar (1991, rev. 2006)
Concerto for viola and orchestra, duration 20 minutes. This piece was commissioned by the BBC for the BBC Proms and premiered there on 21 July 1992 by Nobuko Imai (viola) and the BBC Philharmonic conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier. Originally completed in 1991, it was revised in 2006
Kites
For chamber ensemble: flute (doubling piccolo), oboe (doubling cor anglais), clarinet in A, bassoon, horn in F, two violins, viola, cello, and double bass, duration 15 minutes.
This work was commissioned by the London Sinfonietta and first performed on 13 April 1983 at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, conducted by Antony Pay. It has since been performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Aventa, and Vancouver Symphony Orchestra.

This piece was commissioned for Simon Bainbridge's 50th birthday concert, and the first performance was given on 27 September 2002 by Endymion at St John's Smith Square

For two Bb clarinets (2nd doubling bass), piano and percussion, duration 10 minutes.
This piece was commissioned by the Oxford Contemporary Music Festival and given its first performance on 25 October 1997 by the OFCM Ensemble conducted by Stefan Asbury at the Jaqueline Du Pre Concert Hall
