    Blood on the floor

    For four jazz soloists and large ensemble, duration 80 minutes: I) Blood on the Floor (Prologue); II) Junior Addict; III) Shout; IV) Sweet and Decay; V) Needles; VI) Elegy for Andy; VII) Cut Up; VIII) Crackdown; IX) Dispelling the Fear. This work was co-commissioned by Ensemble Modern, the South Bank Centre for the Royal Festival Hall, Kölner Philharmonie, Konzerthaus Wien and supported by the Siemens Kulturprogramm and the British Council. The completed work was first performed on 30 May 1996 by John Scofield (electric guitar), Peter Erskine (drum kit), Martin Robertson (saxophones) and Ensemble Modern conducted by Peter Rundel.     Dispelling the fears

    Double concerto for two trumpets and orchestra, duration 20 minutes, after a painting by Heather Betts. This work was commissioned by the Philharmonia Orchestra and the Eastern Orchestral Board with financial assistance from the Arts Council of England. It was first performed on 29 October 1995 by Håkan Hardenberger and John Wallace (solo trumpets) with the Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Daniel Harding at the Corn Exchange, Bedford. It has since been performed in Japan, Australia and the USA, with the most recent performance given in Munich in 2019 by soloists Philip Cobb and Gábor Tarkövi, with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Simon Rattle. This piece was premiered on 19 February 2019 by by Caitlyn Valovick-Moore (piccolo) and Keith Carrick (percussion) at Utah University School of Music as part of the Libby-Live series of concerts. Three songs as follows: I) The Singing Cat (text by Stevie Smith); II) Mourned (text from Last Words to a Dumb Friend by Thomas Hardy); III) Last Words (text from Song of Myself by Walt Whitman). This work was premiered on 2 October 2000 by Gerald Finley (baritone) and Julius Drake (piano) at the Wigmore Hall, London.
