Correlating creative qualifications, occupations and industries:Adding a third dimension to the creative trident
The first sub-project of the Beyond the Census project builds a new and innovative version of the QUT Creative Trident model, adding creative qualifications to form a three-dimensional Trident III. This will, for the first time in Australian academic research, provide a creative and cultural industry coding of the Australian Standard Classification of Education to accompany the creative and cultural codings of the Australian and New Zealand Standard industrial and occupation classification standards (ANZSIC and ANZSCO) developed by Cunningham and Higgs (2007). By applying the influential ‘dynamic mapping’ method (Bakhshi et al. 2013) to creative skills—that is, identifying qualifications as creative or cultural based on the skills they develop—this sub-project identifies the prevalence of creative qualifications across the Australian workforce. Here we test the hypothesis that creative and cultural qualifications are held by a wider range of workers and are valued across a much wider range of industries than previously thought, identifying career pathways for creative graduates (Brook et al. 2020). This part of our inquiry has implications for the current Australian Labor government’s review of the previous Conservative government’s major reforms to university funding which priced media and communication degrees in the most expensive band of qualifications on the grounds they did not reflect labour market needs

Exploring Electroencephalography-Based Affective Analysis and Detection of Parkinson’s Disease
While Parkinson’s disease (PD) is typically characterized by motor disorder, there is also evidence of diminished emotion perception in PD patients. This study examines the utility of electroencephalography (EEG) signals to understand emotional differences between PD and healthy controls (HCs), and for automated PD detection. Employing traditional machine learning and deep learning methods on multiple EEG descriptors, we explore (a) dimensional and categorical emotion recognition and (b) PD versus HC classification from multiple descriptors characterizing emotional EEG signals. Our results reveal that PD patients comprehend arousal better than valence and, among emotion categories, fear, disgust, and surprise less accurately, and sadness most accurately. Mislabeling analyses confirm confounds among opposite-valence emotions for PD data. Emotional EEG responses also achieve near-perfect PD versus HC recognition. Cumulatively, our study demonstrates that (a) examining implicit responses alone enables (i) discovery of valence-related impairments in PD patients and (ii) differentiation of PD from HC and that (b) emotional EEG analysis is an ecologically valid, effective, practical, and sustainable tool for PD diagnosis vis-à-vis self-reports, expert assessments, and resting-state analysis.</p
GEMAS:Phosphorus in European agricultural soil - sources versus sinks at the continental-scale - the geological perspective
Phosphorus (P) is one of the essential elements for life on Earth. As a major nutrient it is needed for healthy growth both in plants and living organisms. Although the abundance of P in the Earth's upper continental crust is relatively high (655 mg/kg), many soil types are poor in available phosphorus. The main natural factors controlling the availability of P in soil are pH, mineralogy, and formation of insoluble complexes with Al and Fe under acidic, and with Ca and Mg under alkaline soil conditions. Superimposed weathering processes and climate contribute strongly to P mobility and availability. Additionally, a large fraction of total soil P is in organic forms, which are not directly available to plants. Phosphorus is a major component in fertilisers and thus a significant source of anthropogenic P in soil and water. In the agricultural soil samples that were collected during the Geochemical Mapping of Agricultural and grazing land Soil (GEMAS) project, the total P concentrations (XRF, median 786 m/kg) are only slightly higher than those extracted by hot aqua regia (AR, median 653 mg/kg), while the median concentration in the weak MMI® cold extraction is as low as 4.1 mg/kg. The AR results show very low P concentrations over the coarse-grained sandy sediments of the last glaciation in central and northern Europe and in calcareous soil. The southern limit of the last glaciation is visible as a concentration break on the geochemical maps. In general, north-eastern and north-western Europe are marked by high P values, probably related to cold and humid climate and enrichment in humus-rich coastal soil. The spatial distribution of P at the continental-scale is dominated by geogenic and climatic factors, and the anthropogenic influence is difficult to assess and quantify.</p
Yamuna Harshavardhana, VIDYĀ: Re-rootingthe Beautiful Tree. The Core Meaning and Purposeof Education.
Yamuna Harshavardhana’s book, VIDYĀ: Re-rooting the Beautiful Tree, aims to provide a comparison of the traditional education system in India and the one introduced by the colonial masters and unfortunately continued by the post-independence leaders. For this purpose, she draws on the pre-colonial system as depicted in the book entitled The Beautiful Tree by Dharampal. The book is organized in four sections consisting of a total of eleven chapters. The first section describes the meaning of education. She contends that the primary aim of education is to help realize the full potential of an individual. This she argues is possible only when education is grounded in dharma. She asserts that India is the cradle of systematic education. In second section, she asks many searching and interesting questions and provides deeper insights into the pre-colonial education system in India and compares it with the colonial system. In section three, she establishes a connection between dharma and the education system. Section four focusses on the transformation required in the extant system to rid it of the serious lacunae she finds in the colonial system thrust on India. The aim of the colonial system she claims was to produce a class of servile “educated” Indians who would remain loyal to colonial power
Reliability assessment of the 'field audit for children's active transport routes to school' (FACTS) tool
BACKGROUND: Children's active travel to school is associated with physical activity and thus health. Safe Routes to School (SR2S) programs identify 'safe routes' to promote children's active travel to school. No field audit tool exists specifically to assess the microscale built environment of these 'safe routes' within Australia. This study describes the reliability assessment of the Field Audit for Children's Active Transport to School (FACTS) tool.METHODS: The FACTS tool was developed using a multi-step process, including a literature search, expert opinion, and pilot testing. For the reliability assessment, two trained auditors collected data at eight schools over three weeks in April 2021. For inter-rater reliability, auditors conducted audits on the 'safe routes' for the same six schools. For intra-rater reliability, auditors conducted repeat measures on the 'safe routes' for four schools each (eight schools total), including three different schools each from the six used for inter-rater reliability and one additional school. Item-by-item reliability was assessed using Cohen's Kappa, Cohen's Weighted Kappa, and percentage agreement. The reliability of calculated domain scores was assessed using intraclass correlation coefficients.RESULTS: For inter-rater reliability, 31 of the 45 (68.9%) items had moderate to almost perfect agreement, seven items (15.6%) had below moderate agreement, and a Kappa statistic could not be calculated for seven items (15.6%) due to constant values. For intra-rater reliability, 37 of the 45 (82.2%) items had moderate to almost perfect agreement, two items (4.4%) had below moderate agreement, and a Kappa statistic could not be calculated for six items (13.3%) due to constant values. For inter- and intra-rater reliability of the segment domain scores, three of the four domains had substantial to almost perfect agreement. For inter- and intra-rater reliability of the crossing domain scores, all four domains had moderate to almost perfect agreement. For inter- and intra-rater reliability of the segment, crossing, route, and school scores, all had substantial to perfect agreement.CONCLUSIONS: The FACTS tool can reliably characterise the microscale built environment of promoted 'safe routes' for their use within SR2S programs, and should be considered for use in future SR2S programs within the suburban Australian context.</p
Trump’s win means we’ve narrowly avoided war
There is little doubt that the US is the mightiest military power in human history. At a time when Australia’s ability to defend itself is at its lowest in one hundred years, we need the US, as our major ally, to retain its superpower status as a deterrent against foreign aggression. With Trump’s return to the White House, we can rest easy that our enemies will think twice before acting. He will restore morale to the West and give other Western governments and opportunity to restore their faith in Western ideals
