    Automatic detection of lexical borrowings

    No full text
This thesis presents a comprehensive study of lexical borrowings in Czech, combining resource development with computational experiments on automatic loanword detection, extended to four additional languages. The first part of the thesis focuses on enriching the Czech derivational lexical resource DeriNet 2.2 with structured etymological informa- tion. To this end, the Czech Etymological Dictionary was processed using an automatic extraction method developed as part of this work, resulting in the Czech Etymological Lexicon 1.0. The information from this lexicon was integrated into DeriNet 2.3, creating a unique resource that links etymological and derivational information. The thesis also provides an original analysis of the distributional and morphological differences between native and borrowed Czech words. The final part of the thesis investigates automatic loanword detection through a series of classification experiments on the Czech, German, Polish, Russian, and Swedish datasets. The results show that linguistic features, such as the size of the derivational tree and the part-of-speech category, can enhance model performance. The best results were achieved on Polish data, with an F1 score of 0.92

On the moral limits to market. Case of commercial surrogacy

    No full text
The thesis focuses on the current debate on the moral limits of markets. The first part is devoted to the approach represented by Debra Satz. This author holds the opinion that markets should have moral limits but doubts that they harm some goods in the way that Elizabeth Anderson or Michael Sandel believe. In this context, Satz criticizes Anderson for essentialism. The student analyses the reasons why Satz rejects Anderson's criticism of commercial surrogacy. He then shows howAnderson's position can be defended. The second part of the thesis argues with Jason Brennan and Peter Jaworsky, who reject the idea that there are any moral limits of markets. Their claim-that markets do not introduce anything bad where something bad was not there before-is criticized. The student assesses how Anderson, a supporter of moral limits of markets, could be defended against Brennan's and Jaworsky's arguments. The entire thesis is thus, to a certain extent, a defence of Anderson. It builds on her theory, according to which markets are governed by their own norms, which are fundamentally different from the norms that govern non-market spheres of individual and societal life

The Heroine's Journey in the Binti trilogy by Nnedi Okorafor

In this thesis, I apply the stages of the archetype described in The Heroine's Journey (1990) to a journey of a contemporary YA literary heroine in the Africanfuturistic trilogy Binti (2015 - 2019) by Nigerian-American author Nnedi Okorafor. This bachelor thesis also aims to examine if a model written over thirty years ago is still relevant in contemporary literature. The Heroine's Journey theory was formulated by a Jungian psychoanalyst, Maureen Murdock, for the purposes of therapy to help women in their quest to search for happiness and fulfilment in a society built on masculine values. Similarly to its "predecessor", The Hero's Journey by Joseph Campbell, in which women appear only in relation to men, The Heroine's Journey also draws on mythology in addition to fairy tales, ancient symbols and Jungian archetypes. In the theoretical part of my thesis, I describe Murdock's theory, provide background for Okorafor's work and its motifs, and then proceed with the analysis of the literary text in the practical part. The results of my analysis conclude that while Murdock's framework and Binti share some of their main themes, mostly regarding the identity development of the main protagonist, the framework's restrictive nature keeps it from being universally applicable. Moreover, the strict division of..

The ESG Phenomenon in the Financial Sector and Its Perception by Czech Generation Z

    No full text
This diploma thesis focuses on the ESG phenomenon in the financial sector and its perception in the Czech environment. The aim of the thesis is to examine how Czech Generation Z consumers approach ESG issues in relation to financial institutions and how their attitudes differ based on selected sociodemographic characteristics, specifically gender and income. The thesis is based on the premise that the concept of ESG and its interpretations have evolved from being perceived as the domain of a relatively narrow group of professionals to becoming a broad issue that is also relevant to consumers and their changing expectations regarding the role of business in the 21st century. The theoretical section first addresses this shift, with the author reflecting on the fact that the concept of ESG has, from the outset, been characterised by considerable semantic ambiguity. Furthermore, this section discusses the reasons for implementing ESG principles in companies, including the European Union's legislative framework, presents practical examples of how ESG principles are implemented in financial institutions, and offers a summary of existing knowledge on consumer perceptions of ESG. The research section of the thesis uses a combination of quantitative (questionnaire survey) and qualitative research..

    Object boundary

In my thesis, I will focus on the topic of spatial creation. I will describe how creation in space affects its surroundings and what challenges may arise during its formation. I will concentrate on various forms of utilizing selected materials in public spaces and the possibilities they offer in installations. A significant part will be the examination of the materials used, their unconventional forms, and properties. In the practical section, I will create a graphic series of impressions of selected materials on a flat medium, where I will observe their visual structural differences, thus transferring spatial material into flat creation. Then, I will design and create my own construction set using the selected materials, with which I will make a model of an object for use in public space. In the didactic part, I will build upon the creation in the practical section and translate it into a didactic project. I will use my own authorial construction set for this purpose
