Exploring Geochemical Signatures of Ancient Settlements: A Case Study of an Ancient Tell in Israel

    No full text
Ancient tels offer exceptional opportunities for the scientific study of soil properties. Tel Burna, a multi-period site in the Shephelah region of central Israel, serves as a case study for assessing how anthropogenic and natural post-depositional processes have affected the archaeological record. This thesis aims to identify destruction layers and stratigraphic interpretations using portable optically stimulated luminescence (pOSL) and geochemical analyses (pXRF). Elemental distributions (P, Ca, K, Mn) alongside pOSL can improve the resolution of the interpretation of archaeological strata. Even when clearly visible stratification is absent, chemical enrichment patterns indicate the presence of fire destruction horizons in Iron Age deposits. While elevated concentrations of Ca correspond to the presence of plastered floors composed of calcium carbonates, high K values present in the stratigraphic profile mark the presence of mudbrick structures, which can possibly be associated with wall collapse. Moreover, spatial geochemical patterns show that erosion might have selectively removed some strata. This exposed older layers in certain areas, while preserving occupational deposits (Ca and P) in the northern sector of Area G. By integrating these methods, detecting formation processes of the site and..

    No full text
The topic of this thesis is the relationship between smartphone addiction and the quality of attention in children aged 11-12 years. The aim of the research was to investigate whether there is a correlation between higher levels of smartphone dependence (as measured by the SAS-SV questionnaire) and levels of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity and learning problems (as measured by the Conners 3-S(Z) questionnaire). The theoretical section introduces the smartphone, social media and digital games. In the second section, digital addictions, in particular smartphone addiction, are described. Furthermore, the thesis presents the prevalence of smartphone use among children from toddler age to late adolescence. Finally, the thesis describes the effect of the smartphone on attention. As a result of the research, moderate correlations are found between smartphone dependence rates and rates of inattention, hyperactivity/impulsivity, and learning problems. Additional correlations were found between smartphone dependence and lower age of first smartphone receipt, higher time spent on smartphone per day, and frequency of digital gaming. The thesis concludes that there is an association between smartphone addiction rates and the quality of attention in children aged 11- 12. The results confirm the importance..

From Babur to Present-day Biryani: The story of Indian Gastronomy

    No full text
The bachelor thesis aims to present the development of Indian gastronomy during the Mughal Empire and its influence on today's North Indian cuisine. The course of the assimilation of two different cultures, local Hindu and Central Asian Muslim, will be described through the example of gastronomy. This fusion gave rise to the cuisine also known as Mughalai, which is often considered by foreigners as the main or even the only Indian cuisine. The Mughal period saw the importation of hitherto unknown ingredients and the thesis will therefore also examine the causes of this importation, its composition and the implications it had for court gastronomy. The theoretical part of the thesis will introduce the theory of cultural exchange as a cause of the development of nations, the process of interaction and enrichment of local cultures. The theory of cultural exchange will be demonstrated through the transformation of a particular dish (biryani) from the 16th century to the present. In the last part of the thesis, iconic dishes of the period that have become part of modern Indian gastronomy known all over the world will be briefly introduced

Every Meadow Grows a Different Flower - The Influence of Spatial Features on the Nature of Characters in Nineteenth-Century Novels: Pride and Prejudice, Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre

Every Meadow Grows a Different Flower Ivana Varcholová, 1AAA Abstract This thesis examines the role of space and place in shaping character and narrative in three seminal nineteenth-century novels: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë. Far from serving as passive backdrops, the environments in these works function as dynamic agents that reflect, influence, and often transform the characters who inhabit them. Drawing on theoretical perspectives such as Gaston Bachelard's The Poetics of Space, the study investigates how spatial elements-interiors, landscapes, estates, and transitions between them-symbolise internal states, social structures, and emotional development. Each chapter focuses on the nuanced relationship between character and environment. In Pride and Prejudice, contrasting estates like Longbourn and Pemberley illustrate Elizabeth Bennet's personal growth and shifting values. Wuthering Heights uses the tension between the wild Heights and the orderly Grange to underscore ideological and emotional conflict. Meanwhile, in Jane Eyre, each spatial transition marks a stage in Jane's psychological journey, with places like Lowood and Thornfield serving as both trials and catalysts for self-realisation. The thesis also explores the..

Professional Social Counselling for Informal Caregivers from the Perspective of Social Workers

    No full text
This bachelor thesis focuses on the issue of informal care for older adults and the role of social workers in the area of professional social counselling provided to informal caregivers in the Prague and Central Bohemian regions. The aim of the thesis is to examine how social workers engage with this target group and to identify the specific characteristics of the support they provide. Attention is given both to the individual approach of social workers and to organizational and systemic factors that influence the nature of counselling. The practical part of the thesis was carried out using a qualitative method, specifically through semi-structured interviews with seven social workers employed in organizations providing social counselling to caregivers. The data analysis focused on four main thematic areas: the forms and content of counselling, barriers and supportive factors influencing work with caregivers, and the differences between basic and professional social counselling. The findings indicate that professional social counselling serves as an important form of support for informal caregivers, with its specific form shaped by a range of factors - from the legislative framework and organizational conditions to the approach of individual social workers

This bachelor's thesis deals with the phenomenon of poetry reading as an autonomous artistic medium in the contemporary Czech context. The poetry reading is analyzed here as a parallel form to the printed or digital version of poems, which offers an extension of reception by audiovisual elements and is comparable to performance art in its event-based nature. The thesis focuses on the definition of the term, its typology and contributions of the discipline. The four elements that figure in the performances are described, with references to the events that have taken place and to contemporary poets. Finally, three events are analyzed through selected aspects. The aim of the thesis is to highlight the uniqueness of this medium, the need for critical and theoretical reflection on it, and its position in the literary world

Pluralia tantum in Spanish and Czech

    No full text
This bachelor's thesis deals with plural nouns (pluralia tantum) in Spanish and Czech, especially their occurrence in comparable contexts. The topic is interesting because of the frequent ambiguity in English, the differences in plural formation, and the fact that some pluralia tantum exist in both languages but others do not. These differences can cause difficulties in teaching, translation and linguistic analysis. This thesis aims to compare the most common pluralia tantum in both languages and to see how many of them have a direct counterpart. The theoretical part is devoted to the grammatical phenomenon of pluralia tantum, the formation of plurals and their specifics in Czech and Spanish. The practical part uses corpus analysis, dictionaries (e.g. Lingea, RAE) and other tools to determine the meaning, frequency and translation of selected words. The results show that the greatest agreement exists for specific terms, especially in the area of Tools and equipment. In contrast, there is less agreement for abstract, cultural or agency terms. The findings may be useful in translation, foreign language teaching (whether Czech or Spanish) or in the development of teaching materials. In the future, it would be advisable to extend the research to other corpora and languages, thus providing a more..
