A Theology of Failure:Žižek against Christian Innocence

    No full text
Everyone agrees that theology has failed; but the question of how to understand and respond to this failure is complex and contested. Against both the radical orthodox attempt to return to a time before the theology’s failure and the deconstructive theological attempt to open theology up to the hope of a future beyond failure, Rose proposes an account of Christian identity as constituted by, not despite, failure. Understanding failure as central to theology opens up new possibilities for confronting Christianity’s violent and kyriarchal history and abandoning the attempt to discover a pure Christ outside of the grotesque materiality of the church. The Christian mystical tradition begins with Dionysius the Areopagite’s uncomfortable but productive conjunction of Christian theology and Neoplatonism. The tensions generated by this are central to Dionysius’s legacy, visible not only in subsequent theological thought but also in much twentieth century continental philosophy as it seeks to disentangle itself from its Christian ancestry. A Theology of Failure shows how the work of Slavoj Žižek represents an attempt to repeat the original move of Christian mystical theology, bringing together the themes of language, desire, and transcendence not with Neoplatonism but with a materialist account of the world. Tracing these themes through the work of Dionysius and Derrida and through contemporary debates about the gift, violence, and revolution, this book offers a critical theological engagement with Žižek's account of social and political transformation, showing how Žižek's work makes possible a materialist reading of apophatic theology and Christian identity

Talented but Disruptive:An Exploration of Problematic Players in Sports Teams

    Get PDF
This study aimed to enhance the understanding of problematic players, who have been identified as highly talented but negative influences in team sport. Using semi-structured interviews, 15 players and coaches’ experiences of problematic players were explored. Results were divided into features, causes of behavior, impacts, and managerial considerations surrounding problematic players. Findings revealed problematic players share characteristics with narcissists. From an applied perspective, the negative impacts from these players are recognized, such as negative role modeling and lower team morale. Managerial considerations for these players are discussed, which could be beneficial for coaches working with problematic players and their negativity. Lay Summary: We explored coach and player experiences of individuals who are highly talented yet problematic. Such players can now be understood further, in terms of behaviors such as blame shifting, and their impacts such as negative role modeling and creating team divides. Creating stronger coach–player relationships were suggested for effective collaboration.</p

High-intensity interval training and moderate-intensity continuous training in adults with Crohn’s disease: a pilot randomised controlled trial

    Get PDF
Background: This study assessed the feasibility and acceptability of two common types of exercise training - high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) - in adults with Crohn's disease (CD). Methods: In this mixed-methods pilot trial, participants with quiescent or mildly-active CD were randomly assigned 1:1:1 to HIIT, MICT or usual care control, and followed up for 6 months. The HIIT and MICT groups were offered three exercise sessions per week for the first 12 weeks. Feasibility outcomes included rates of recruitment, retention, outcome completion, and exercise attendance. Data were collected on cardiorespiratory fitness (e.g., peak oxygen uptake), disease activity, fatigue, quality of life, adverse events, and intervention acceptability (via interviews). Results: Over 17 months, 53 patients were assessed for eligibility and 36 (68%) were randomised (47% male; mean age 36.9 [SD 11.2] years); 13 to HIIT, 12 to MICT, and 11 to control. The exercise session attendance rate was 62% for HIIT (288/465) and 75% for MICT (320/429), with 62% of HIIT participants (8/13) and 67% of MICT participants (8/12) completing at least 24 of 36 sessions. One participant was lost to follow-up. Outcome completion rates ranged from 89 to 97%. The mean increase in peak oxygen uptake, relative to control, was greater following HIIT than MICT (2.4 vs. 0.7 mL/kg/min). There were three non-serious exercise-related adverse events, and two exercise participants experienced disease relapse during follow-up. Conclusions: The findings support the feasibility and acceptability of the exercise programmes and trial procedures. A definitive trial is warranted. Physical exercise remains a potentially useful adjunct therapy in CD. [ID: ISRCTN13021107].</p

Data Science in the Business Environment: Skills Analytics for Curriculum Development

    Get PDF
Data science is an interdisciplinary field of methods, processes, algorithms and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data. University of Winchester Business School, UK is developing an undergraduate degree programme in Data Science which brings together student-centred and business-driven approaches: positioning the course for the interests of students and requirements of employers. The new programme follows the expectations of relevant subject benchmark statements and is built on activities which focus on different aspects of data science, drawing on some existing modules as a base. It integrates key themes in information management, data mining, machine learning and business intelligence. This paper presents the ongoing development of the Data Science programme through the key aspects in its conception and design. Understanding the employment market while defining specific skills sets associated with potential graduates is always important for courses in higher education. The Skills Framework for the Information Age (SFIA) has been adopted and a novel mapping proposed for the interpretation of employability skills related to data science. These are then linked to an adapted process model as well as the specialist modules across academic levels

Diaspora and ambidextrous management of tourism in post-colonial, post-conflict and post-disaster destinations

    Get PDF
This exploratory study aims at identifying diaspora tourism practices and at exploring its benefit in Haiti, a Carribbean island. In so doing, this research work fills both theoretical and practical gaps through the conceptualisation and operationalisation of diasporic tourism in the Caribbean. The methodological approach is mainly based on secondary data, though primary data collected from two culinary events organised by a Haitian chef from the diaspora were also considered. The findings show that diasporic tourism generate significant benefits to underperforming destinations and is considered to be more beneficial that international tourism; diaspora tourism is not seasonal; diasporans not only visit main tourist areas but also visit secondary regional sites; they consume local products and services and therefore directly support the local businesses. The members of the diaspora are seen as ambassadors of their culture and hence contribute in the marketing of the destinations. The findings also show that the future of PCCDDs tourism may be sustained using an ambidextrous management approach and in the process, it becomes a reference for developing tourism economies in under-performing destinations

    ‘Mixed Middlings’:Irish Jewish Intersections

    Get PDF
This article explores recent literature which reflects on the intersections and interstices between Jewishness and Irishness. The discussion focuses in particular on two novels: Maurice White’s Keep Breathing Out (2013) and Ruth Gilligan’s Nine Folds Make a Paper Swan (2016). Drawing from Foucault’s theory of heterotopian, ‘other’ spaces, the article explores representations of the Promised Land, the Fifth Province and the asylum in these texts, contending that the asylum, which is seemingly marginal, is in fact central to constructing and defining an idea of Irish Jewishness

Understanding what influences people's attitudes towards individuals with dementia

    Get PDF
Stigmatisation of people with dementia is a problem that affects people's quality of life. This is an increasing problem due to the growing numbers of people diagnosed with dementia as indicated by dementia being the leading cause of death in the UK (Starr, 2017). Identifying the causes behind negative perceptions should help remove, or reduce, stigma. This study investigated how a person’s age, familiarity, knowledge, or fear, of dementia influenced their attitudes towards people with dementia. Findings from 130 participants aged 18-64 years old showed that fear of dementia had a significant negative correlation with attitudes towards people with dementia. However, age, familiarity and knowledge, did not have a significant effect on participant’s attitudes. Overall, regression analysis indicated that these predictor variables only explained 6% of variance in attitudes toward people with dementia. This indicates that interventions focused on reducing fear of dementia may have a positive effect on public attitudes towards people with dementia, but clearly there are more complex explanations that need to be sought to explain the current levels of stigma seen

Hexing the discipline:against the reproduction of continental philosophy of religion

    No full text
There has been a generalised anxiety concerning the future of continental philosophy of religion as a discipline, with a number of books, articles, conferences, and presentations taking up this theme. This anxiety exists because as a discipline continental philosophy of religion lacks a clear claim to an identity. This article analyses the anxiety concerning the future of continental philosophy of religion as an anxiety of reproduction. By locating the philosopher’s anxiety within a wider anxiety of reproduction we begin to understand this anxiety through the queer anti-social critique of Lee Edelman. This anxiety is traced through three processes of reproduction: intellectual reproduction, disciplinary reproduction, and institutional reproduction. The article goes on to sketch out a position against the reproduction of continental philosophy of religion by taking on and celebrating the discipline’s improper nature. Appealing neither to secular reason nor to established traditions, we draw on the Malleus Maleficarum (as read through queer theory and non-philosophy) to craft various models for thought. Here we find abortion prized over the future of the race, miscegenation over blood purity, and impotence and infertility over the sovereign power of the father. These models are explored both in terms of their historical context and as providing a different image of the work that can be carried out in the discipline of continental philosophy of religion. The article concludes by suggesting other perverse lines of relation that may be opened up when one gives up on the reproduction of the discipline
