The moderating effects of speed, strength and endurance capacities on match induced neuromuscular fatigue in U-18 English premier league academy football players: A hypothesis-generating case report
Purpose: To identify new hypotheses relating to the moderating effects of speed, strength and endurance capacities on match-induced neuromuscular fatigue. Methods 14 U-18 outfield players from one EPL academy team completed countermovement jump (CMJ) and isometric adductor (IADS) and posterior chain (IPCS) strength tests one day before match day (MD) (i.e., MD-1) and on MD + 2 around 8 competitive games. Explosive strength (CMJ), reactive strength (30 cm drop jump (DJ)), speed (10 m and 30 m), maximal strength (isometric mid-thigh pull (IMTP)) and endurance (1 km Time Trial (TT)) were measured at 4 time points across the season. Relationships between the average match induced change to each NMF measure and the average of each physical capacity measure were examined using Pearson's R ( r ) (when normally distributed) or Spearman's rank ( rho ) (when not normally distributed) correlation coefficients. Results: Moderate positive relationships were observed between CMJ-JH change ( δ ) and DJ-RSI ( rho = 0.36; p = 0.16) and IMPT ( r = 0.46; p = 0.06). Small negative relationships were observed between IADS-PF δ and 10 m speed ( rho = 0.27; p = 0.29), 30 m speed ( r = 0.22; p = 0.41), CMJ-JH ( rho = 0.29; p = 0.26) and DJ-RSI ( rho = 0.36; p = 0.16), and between IPCS-PF δ and 10 m speed ( rho = 0.20; p = 0.45) and 1kmTT ( rho = 0.26; p = 0.33). Conclusions: These results generate important hypotheses relating to the potential mitigating effects that reactive strength, maximal strength and endurance capacities might exert on match induced NMF in U-18 academy football players. These relationships warrant further investigation in larger research designs spanning both older and younger player age groups (i.e., across other youth development and professional development phase players) and competition levels (i.e., elite and sub-elite players)
Organisational attachment and the academic: A collaborative autoethnographic reflection within the “newer normal” context of emergent workplace norms in UK higher education
Purpose – With hybrid working having become more commonplace and normalised within higher education in the post-Covid-19 period, this paper considers whether such trends have impacted the level of attachment that academics experience in relation to their institution. In doing so, there is scope to gain a greater understanding of academic behaviours and working practices in the post-pandemic environment, with potential implications for higher education institutions in their future staff development strategies, initiatives and interventions.
Design/methodology/approach – A collaborative auto-ethnographic approach was adopted to examine the lived experiences of four academics reflecting on their personal career journeys and related fluctuations, over time, in feelings of attachment towards their institution.
Findings – Despite personal contextual differences, the changing ‘newer normal’ context of the post-pandemic period has contributed to each academic experiencing changing levels of attachment and foci in their roles.
Research implications – Coupled with the declining nature of academic citizenship and a shifting psychological contract, increasing levels of disconnect and dysfunctionality within higher education institutions in the post-pandemic period can lead to a relative decline in sense of staff belonging and engagement, which should be of concern to institutional management.
Originality – This study provides an original reflection on the changing features of attachment in higher education, indicating that the connectedness of academic staff goes beyond their connection to the institution, also being grounded within individual relationships that are increasingly subject to change and strain within the emergent post-pandemic hybrid working context

Place-responsive Pedagogy in Outdoor Learning
This chapter introduces the reader to place-responsive pedagogy within outdoor learning (OL). Place is conceptualised around ideas of connection, supporting readers to reconsider and deepen understanding around this term. A socio-cultural perspective of place intensifies the notion of place-responsive pedagogy and supports teachers’ planning for outdoor experiences. Readers are invited to reflect on their own experiences of place in order to position themselves within a place-responsive pedagogical philosophy
Inclusive and Holistic Practice in Place-responsive Outdoor Learning
This chapter aims to promote inclusion in outdoor learning (OL) through practice that empowers agency, access and participation. Embracing learning as a cultural process, inclusion in OL recognises and supports diversity through pedagogical design that responds to people and places. Meaningful processes of co-construction provide insight into how OL can embrace individual interests and identities, inform expectations and support anticipatory planning within critical, holistic and adaptive practice. The chapter places particular focus on including children and young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and/or disabilities through pedagogy that celebrates and understands difference. I introduce ‘critical adaptive pedagogy’ and other practical tools to suggest how barriers can be anticipated, identified and addressed to plan inclusive OL environments and experiences. This involves a continuous cycle of co-construction, anticipation, planning, response and critical thinking. The chapter exemplifies a holistic and inclusive approach that can be applied to any context and every individual, to ensure that all learners can access and participate in meaningful, challenging OL opportunities
Single-Channel EEG Classification for Motor Tasks via Bayesian-Optimized Lightweight 1D CNN
Electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring enables the capture of brain activity and provides insights into motor tasks with applications in rehabilitation, prosthetic control, and Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI). Traditional classification approaches often rely on complex architectures, limiting usability in resource-constrained settings. This study introduces a 1-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network (1D CNN) optimised using Gaussian-based Bayesian optimisation for classifying single-channel EEG signals. While existing models are deep, requiring extensive pre-and post-processing, the proposed model achieves a trade-off between computational efficiency and classification accuracy. Trained exclusively on a private dataset of 27 individuals performing motor tasks, the model achieved a promising accuracy of 81.82%, demonstrating its potential for practical deployment. The proposed model also outperformed complex pre-trained architectures such as VGG-16 and GoogLeNet by achieving significantly fewer parameters and lower computational demand, making it particularly suitable for resource-limited environments. “We just make do” The use, comfort and functionality of personal protective equipment in the UK mounted police
Police officers wear personal protective equipment (PPE) to reduce their risk of injury while on duty. Despite the unique policing activity of riding a horse, little is known about the PPE used by mounted officers. The aim of this research was to assess the use, comfort, and functionality of mounted police PPE. Twenty officers from three UK Mounted Sections were recruited. Semi-structured interviews and range of movement assessments were conducted. Interview data was analysed using reflexive thematic analysis. Three main themes were generated: Functional requirements, Issues, and Areas for improvement. Much of the PPE worn by mounted officers is not designed for the risks associated with horse riding. There was a sense that officers “make do” with their current PPE provision, but increased protection from falls and mounted specific public order protection were identified as particular areas for improvement
