    Lexical-semantic support of verbal short-term memory under phonological demand: Evidence for persistent imageability effects in immediate serial recall under rapid presentation and in dyslexic adults.

    Verbal short-term memory (vSTM) draws on both phonological and lexical-semantic systems. This study examined whether vSTM support from semantic properties—specifically word imageability— varies with phonological ability and whether it endures rapid encoding conditions. Two auditory immediate serial recall (ISR) experiments tested recall for high- and low-imageability word lists in adults with and without developmental dyslexia. In Experiment 1, word imageability effects in standard presentation ISR were robust and equivalent across groups, despite the context of lower nonword recall in dyslexic participants. Experiment 2 used speeded presentation to limit rehearsal and reduce strategic encoding. Imageability effects were still observed, and a moderate association emerged between imageability benefit and nonword recall, which had not been observed with standard rate presentation. However, there remained no group-level differences in word recall. These findings indicate that imageability supports vSTM performance across individuals and task conditions. They do not provide strong evidence for compensatory mechanisms but rather highlight the general stability of semantic support in verbal memory across conditions

    The major focus of the study is to review existing literature, conceptualize and map future various research avenues in line Circular Economy (CE) and Sustainable Supply Chain Management (SSCM). This paper explores important issues in sustainable supply chain management for transitioning to a circular economy. It employs systematic literature review methodology to explore potential gaps in existing literature. The results show an exponential growth in this domain and collaboration among authors throughout the world. It offers important social, practical and theoretical contributions to evolving literature critical for all economies, where addressing resource scarcity and environmental issues are already of significant concern in relation to economic development. Furthermore, the study shows that circular economy (CE) improves resource efficiency through circulating biological and technical in a regenerative and restorative cycles. Originally, the study unearthed innovative emerging trends, development of new frameworks, impact assessment, identification of challenges and opportunities, cross disciplinary insights with significant advancement of knowledge in line with sustainable supply chain management due to the interconnected nature of the global economy. Transitioning to a circular economy has caused circular thinking with integration to supply chain and its surrounding natural and industrial ecosystems

    The Moderating Effect of Match External Load on Neuromuscular Performance in U-18 English Premier League Academy Football Players: A Principal Component Regression Approach.

J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2025-We examined the moderating effect of match external load measures on neuromuscular performance in U-18 English Premier League (EPL) football players. Seventeen male outfield players completed countermovement jump (CMJ) and isometric hip adductor (IADS) and posterior chain strength tests 1 day before (MD-1) and 2 days after (MD+2) 8 competitive games. Total, high-speed running, high metabolic load, explosive and Zone6 distances, and the total number of accelerations and decelerations were recorded using global positioning system and microelectrical mechanical sensor devices. Standardized changes to neuromuscular performance measures (CMJ jump height and IADS and isometric posterior chain strength peak force) were summated to create a total score of neuromuscular performance. Principal component (PC) analysis and a linear mixed-effects regression model examined the relationships between external load and neuromuscular performance changes with significance set to p < 0.050. Two PCs explained 93% of the variance in external load variables. PC1 had an equal contribution from all external load metrics and was therefore considered representative of total match volume. PC2 was primarily composed from Zone6 and high-speed running distance and was therefore considered representative of high-speed running and sprint volume. Standardized neuromuscular performance reduced by 0.85 from MD-1 to MD+2. PC1 (mean: 0.0 ± 2.4, range: -5.9 to 4.8) had a significant negative relationship with neuromuscular performance ( β = -0.23, p = 0.044) and IADS peak force ( β = -0.15, p = 0.007), but no other components exerted significant effects ( p ≥ 0.121). Match volume exerts a negative linear effect on neuromuscular performance and IADS peak force in U-18 EPL academy football players.     Ritual and the Trans Body in the Church of England

    According to Victor Turner (2008 [1969]), rituals can shift people from one identity to another, often resolving liminal states and dispelling ambiguities. Ritualised words and actions may also generate ontologies (Bell, 1992) that fit into regulatory systems of taboo and sanctification (Rappaport, 1999). In this article, we argue that ritual in the Church of England is used to both affirm and police trans identities. The Church’s recent process to approve the guidance accompanying renewal of baptismal vows as a liturgy of welcome for trans people, and the accompanying backlash, highlights the role of liturgy and ritual for trans belonging in the Church and the ways power over liturgical words and praxis is overtly wielded. The marriage rite has established ontological meaning for trans bodies on condition they support heterosexuality. Yet there is a subversive access to meaning-making in both these ritual contexts. As part of a research project exploring chaplaincy support of trans and non-binary people, we interviewed several trans people of faith, including two prominent priests in the Church of England. The lived experiences shared with us reveal the ways in which trans bodies have become sites onto which anxieties about gender are projected. Church-sanctioned ritual can provide an unambiguous ontological gendered identity, but there are questions raised about how expansive gender categories need to be, a discussion raised by Katharine Jenkins’ (2016) in a critical discussion on feminist ameliorative inclusion. The Church’s ritual life seeks to underpin heteronormative binaries, ensuring that trans bodies are used to reproduce fixed meanings around sexuality, sex, and gender. We explore the extent to which, whilst ritual might support inclusion, the Church’s ritualised meaning-making lands heavily on the bodies of trans people, through a process that places abstract theological and doctrinal objections onto individual embodiment. We argue that the focus on trans bodies operates within the affective economy (Ahmed, 2004) and requires emotional labour from trans people in negotiating the meaning-making of rituals and the opprobrium this attracts from groups within the Church of England

    A Multi-Sample Examination of the Relationship Between Athlete Burnout and Sport Performance

    Athlete burnout potentially has negative consequences for sport performance. However, to the best of our knowledge, empirical studies have yet to examine the relationship between athlete burnout and objective sport performance. Consequently, we aimed to provide a first such examination. To do so, we recruited three samples. We used Sample 1 (n = 106: track and field athletes) to examine the predictive utility of athlete burnout on a single performance, Sample 2 (n = 181: swimmers) to examine whether the findings from Sample 1 can be replicated in a different sport, and Sample 3 (n = 169: track and field athletes) to examine the predictive utility of athlete burnout on peak performance in a three-month period. Finally, having captured three samples each assessing the athlete burnout-performance relationship, we also sought to quantify the combined effect across these samples using a relatively new analytical technique – mini meta-analysis. Results of correlational and regression analyses showed that in at least two of the three samples total burnout, reduced sense of accomplishment, and sport devaluation each negatively predicted performance, whereas emotional and physical exhaustion was unrelated to performance. When we combined the samples, mini meta-analysis showed that total burnout, reduced sense of accomplishment, and sport devaluation each displayed a small-to-medium negative and significant meta-correlation with performance. The findings suggest that certain athlete burnout symptoms may indeed have negative consequences for sport performance, and that this is the case when considering a single performance and peak performance over time

    Sulfur vacancy-rich ultrathin NiCo2Sx nanosheet arrays as a high-performance electrocatalytic reduction catalyst for nitrate to dinitrogen

    Nitrate (NO3−) electrocatalytic reduction is one of the most promising technologies for solving NO3− pollution in natural water. Nonprecious electrocatalysts with satisfactory cost and stable catalytic performance is essential to NO3− electrocatalytic reduction. Herein, a sulfur vacancy-rich ultrathin NiCo2Sx nanosheet arrays supported on a nickel foam electrode (denoted as U-NiCo2Sx/NF) is synthesized via simply a one-step constant current deposition strategy. The obtained U-NiCo2Sx/NF displays unique ultrathin sulfide nanosheet arrays, providing abundant infiltration space for NO3− transport, rich catalytic active site and enhanced structure stability. As such, the U-NiCo2Sx/NF exhibits outstanding NO3− electrocatalytic reduction performance with a high NO3− removal rate of 90.60 ± 0.16 % at the conduction of 50 mg L−1 initial NO3− concentration (in terms of NO3−-N), 120 min reaction time and 1.0 mA cm−2 working current density. Meanwhile, the N2 is the main final NO3− reduction product with a high N2 selectivity of 98.48 ± 0.29 %. In addition, the U-NiCo2Sx/NF presents excellent chloride ion tolerance (≤5000 mg L−1) and electrochemical stability (20 electrolysis times). The cyclic voltammetry, i-t chronoamperometric and Tafel test further demonstrate the preeminent NO3− electrocatalytic reduction activity of U-NiCo2Sx/NF. This work may enlighten a simple paradigm to design stable and effective nonprecious electrocatalyst for NO3− electrocatalytic reduction

    How are unrepresented defendants treated in the magistrates' courts?

    This article examines how unrepresented defendants are treated in the magistrates’ courts, in England and Wales. The findings are based on a small-scale study where 20 court actors were interviewed and a range of hearings were observed. It is argued that although there are examples of good practice, where court staff do treat unrepresented defendants well and assist them to participate in the process, more needs to be done in relation to this. Currently, factors such as efficiency concerns are being prioritised over defendant engagement. This makes it more difficult for unrepresented defendants to participate in the process, which undermines their due process, liberal democratic and human rights

    Humanistic Therapy for Young People: Client-Perceived Helpful Aspects, Hindering Aspects, and Processes of Change

    Abstract This qualitative study aimed to establish aspects of humanistic therapy that young people (13–16 years old) perceived as helpful and hindering, and to test a novel method for identifying perceived processes of change. A “medium q” thematic analysis was conducted followed by a coding-based “process of change analysis.” Participants were 50 young people in London schools who experienced moderate or severe emotional symptoms and had participated in up to 10 sessions of a school-based humanistic intervention. Participants were predominantly female and ethnically heterogeneous. Therapist qualities most often perceived as helpful were affiliative in nature. Unhelpful therapist activities were silences and a lack of input. Young people described feeling free to talk and open up. Helpful outcomes included feeling unburdened, gaining insight, and improving relationships. “Getting things off their chest,” “Advice and guidance,” “Modeling relationships,” and “insights to behavior change” were identified as specific processes of change in over 50% of young people. Approximately one-third felt hindered by a lack of therapist input, silences, or not feeling able to open up or trust. These findings indicate the potential value of an active, “process guiding” stance in humanistic therapy. Our process of change analysis has potential for identifying perceived change mechanisms in therapy.     Are rare earth stocks efficient? Novel insights using asymmetric MF-DFA

    This study investigates the weak-form efficiency and asymmetric multifractal scaling behavior of rare earth stock indices in the global, U.S. and Chinese markets during the trade war and the COVID-19 period. We examine the scaling behavior across overall, upward (bullish), and downward (bearish) market states from 2013 to 2021, employing an asymmetric multifractal detrended fluctuation analysis approach. Our findings indicate asymmetric multifractality in U.S. rare earth stock prices, caused by fat tails and long-range correlations. Weak-form price inefficiency and asymmetry in U.S. rare earth stock prices are prominent during market downturns, such as the trade war and COVID-19 periods. Chinese rare earth stocks demonstrate greater efficiency than U.S. and global stocks; thus, the latter markets provide arbitrage opportunities during upward and downward trends
