Improved gradient scaling for score-driven filters with an application to stock market volatility

    No full text
Score-driven filters are updated by the scaled gradient of the log-likelihood (LL). The gradient is with respect to a dynamic parameter and the scaling parameter is 1, or the information quantity or its square root in the literature. The information quantity is minus the expected value of the Hessian of the LL with respect to a dynamic parameter, i.e. the Hessianis smoothed using a probability-weighted average for each period. We suggest an alternative approach and scale the gradients using novel Hessian-driven filters, i.e. Hessian smoothing is performed over time. The method can be used for score-driven models in general. We illustrate it for Beta-t-EGARCH (exponential generalized autoregressive conditional heteroscedasticity). Weuse Standard & Poor's 500 (S&P 500) data. We show empirical results for in-sample statistical performance from 2015 to 2025, and out-of-sample forecasting performance from 2021 to 2025. We find for the S&P 500 that the Hessian-driven scaling is superior to the existing scaling methods for Beta-t-EGARCH. We find similar results for a Monte Carlo simulation experimentwhere misspecified Beta-t-EGARCH models with constant and Hessian-driven gradient scaling are estimated for returns generated by a Markov-switching (MS) Beta-t-EGARCH. Hessianbased gradient scaling captures regime-switching dynamics better than constant gradient scaling

Decentralized privacy-concerned assignment of ambulances in special emergencies

    No full text
This paper addresses the assignment of patients to ambulances in the case of inaccessibility to a central deciding entity, so patients have to be assigned through a dynamic decentralized coordination of ambulances. The suggested solution consists of BDI agents acting as ambulances and directly negotiating patient assignments with their ambulance peers. Since the privacy of health information is specially protected by law, negotiating ambulances that may be not the ones finally moving such patients to the hospital do not have access to this sensible health information. Simulations of agents show how this privacy-aware solution is compared with an alternative where all health information is shared. In this way, a measure of how much efficiency cost implies the use of the limited privacy protection is estimated. This work was funded by public research projects of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (CACTUS), reference PID2020-118249RB-C22 and Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitivity (MINECO), reference TEC2017-88048-C2-2-R, finally PID 2020-116855RB-I00 and AUDEMAK2020.

    Get PDF

    Get PDF

    Dynamic effects of persistent shocks

We provide evidence that many narrative shocks used by prominent literature display some persistence. We show that the two leading methods to estimate impulse responses to an independently identified shock (local projections and distributed lag models) treat persistence differently, hence identifying different objects. We propose corrections to re-establish the equivalence between local projections and distributed lag models, providing applied researchers with methods and guidance to estimate their desired object of interest. We apply these methods to well-known empirical work and find that how persistence is treated has a sizable impact on the estimates of dynamic effects.Gonzalo gratefully acknowledges financial support from the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación through grants PID2019-104960GB-IO0, TED2021-129784B-IO0, AEl/10.13039/501100011033-CEX2021-001181-M

Review of Shock-Turbulence Interaction with a Focus on Hypersonic Flow

    No full text
Hypersonic flight involves a variety of complex flow phenomena that directly impact the aerothermodynamic loading of high-speed vehicles. The turbulence encountered during a typical flight trajectory influences and interacts with the shock waves on and around the surface of a vehicle and its propulsion system, affecting both aerodynamic and power plant performance. These interactions can be studied by isolating a turbulent flow convected through a normal shock, commonly referred to as the canonical shock-turbulence interaction (STI) problem. Scale-resolving computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and linear interaction analysis (LIA) have been crucial in studying this problem and formulating scaling laws that explain the observed behavior. In this work, an extensive review of the theoretical (LIA) and numerical (CFD) work on the canonical STI is presented. The majority of the work conducted to date has focused on calorically perfect gases with constant heat capacities. However, in hypersonic flows, chemical and thermal non-equilibrium effects may alter the nature of the interaction. As a result, relevant LIA and CFD studies addressing high-enthalpy phenomena are also succinctly discussed.CH and ACL work has been partially supported by projects PID2022-139082NB-C51 and TED2021- 129446B-C41 funded by MCIN/AEI. Switching the leverage switch

    Get PDF
This paper introduces a new asymmetric stochastic volatility model designed to capture how both the sign and magnitude of past shocks influence future volatility. The proposed Leverage Propagation Stochastic Volatility (LPSV) model extends traditional formulations by allowing the feedback mechanism to evolve over time, offering a more persistent and realistic representation of leverage effects than standard asymmetric stochastic volatility models. Based on the intuition that the impact of negative shocks on volatility unfolds gradually, rather than instantaneously, the model encodes this ``leverage propagation'' directly in its structure. Under Gaussian assumptions, we establish stationarity conditions and derive closed-form expressions for variance, kurtosis, and a novel leverage propagation function that quantifies delayed transmission of asymmetry. A Monte Carlo study confirms the robustness of Bayesian inference via Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC), even under heavy-tailed shocks. In empirical applications, the LPSV model captures volatility clustering and asymmetric persistence more effectively than competing alternatives, using daily financial returns from the German DAX and U.S. S&P 500. Moreover, the model captures prolonged volatility responses to non-financial shocks -illustrated through PM2.5 air pollution data from Madrid during Saharan dust events, demonstrating its broader relevance for environmental volatility modelling. These findings highlight the versatility of the model to trace the dynamics of delayed volatility sensitive to sign in different domains where understanding the persistence of risk is crucial.J.M. Rosenbrock's theorem on system matrices over elementary divisor domains

    Get PDF
Rosenbrock's theorem on polynomial system matrices is a classical result in linear systems theory that relates the SmithMcMillan form of a rational matrix Gwith the Smith form of an irreducible polynomial system matrix Pgiving rise to Gand the Smith form of a submatrix of P. This theorem has been essential in the development of algorithms for computing the poles and zeros of a rational matrix via linearizations and generalized eigenvalue algorithms. In this paper, we extend Rosenbrock's theorem to system matrices Pwith entries in an arbitrary elementary divisor domain Rand matrices Gwith entries in the field of fractions of R. These are the most general rings where the involved Smith-McMillan and Smith forms both exist and, so, where the problem makes sense. Moreover, we analyze in detail what happens when the system matrix is not irreducible. Finally, we explore how Rosenbrock's theorem can be extended when the system matrix Pitself has entries in the field of fractions of the elementary divisor domain.

    Get PDF
This doctoral thesis examines the relationship between art, artistic creation, and critical education within the context of late capitalism. Beginning with a reflection on the viability of critical education in an environment that systematically hinders it, this work seeks to identify strategies to overcome this situation. To this end, it develops a reflection on how to understand art and artistic creation as forms of critical pedagogy that promote practices of intellectual and social emancipation. For this purpose, we analyze the weakening of critical thinking in current education, where methodocentrism prioritizes technique over instruction, promoting individualism and delegitimizing objective knowledge as a catalyst for emancipation. We, therefore, identify two pedagogical responses: adaptation to «uncertainty» (Garcés, 2020), represented by the «pseudocritical» or «false alternative» pedagogical models (Pérez Rueda, 2022), or confrontation through a «sociocritical» pedagogy that seeks to foster a critical consciousness extensible to artistic practice. In this context, the thesis analyzes «pseudocritical» pedagogies and their use of art and artistic creation, highlighting that, despite their social and transformative interest, their non directive and anti-authoritarian principles (Pérez Rueda, 2022) replicate some of the problems found in disciplinary education, such as the reproduction of epistemic and social inequalities. By prioritizing the individual and subjective expression of the student, free «experimentation» devoid of content, and the exaltation of the figure of the «art-educator»—which undermines the role of the traditional teacher—these pedagogies delegate the critical capacity and formation of students to a form of voluntarism or spontaneity education. With the aim of establishing a theoretical framework for critical pedagogy in artistic creation, this research analyzes the perspectives of Bourdieu and Rancière in relation to intellectual and social emancipation. While the importance that Rancière assigns to emancipation through «dissensus» is recognized, it is necessary to debate the extent to which his proposal underestimates the role of these inequalities when addressing an emancipatory approach devoid of the acquisition of critical consciousness. In this sense, Bourdieu's contributions on «habitus» are indispensable for pointing out the limitations of Rancière's model. Once this problem has been considered, the research focuses on addressing Rancière's critique of the «pedagogical model» and the «archi-éthique» paradigm as presuppositions of political art. With this purpose, we seek to identify forms of politicity inherent in both models criticized by Rancière, so that they are compatible with a perspective proper to critical pedagogies. To this end, we rescue the concept of «distancing effect» present in Brechtian theater and, on the other hand, the practices of Augusto Boal's «Theater of the Oppressed». This analysis reveals, respectively, forms of acquiring critical consciousness in the «pedagogical model»—close to Bourdieu—and forms of «disidentification» through «dissensus» in «archi-éthique» paradigm—close to Rancière—. However, as we have been pointing out, it is necessary to consider the limitations of Rancière's emancipatory model, also in the field of art. To this end, we carry out a case study of the theatrical work Five Easy Pieces by playwright Milo Rau, whose staging allows us to observe how the «disidentification» of children operates with respect to the hegemonic idea of childhood devoid of critical consciousness. In this work, focused on a specific case of child abuse, the children reproduce the testimonies of the adults by imitating their gestures and words. However, there is no clear awareness of the content of what they express, a question that Milo Rau emphasizes with the purpose of involving the public in the manipulative game of abuse. The research culminates with the presentation of Proyecto Grimm, an artistic proposal developed within the framework of this research that seeks to integrate both Rancière's «dissensual» approach, based on «disidentification», and Bourdieu's emancipatory perspective, based on awareness. Proyecto Grimm allowed us to reflect on childhood censorship with children, taking as a starting point the first stories of the Brothers Grimm. Through the analysis of the successive adaptations, modifications, and corrections of these stories, we generated a dramaturgy where processes of «disidentification» were produced from the conscious children's play and the intersection with the musical composition by Carlos de Castellarnau, based on the aesthetics of the grotesque. Proyecto Grimm aims to offer new ways of thinking about models of artistic creation related to critical pedagogiesPrograma de Doctorado en Humanidades por la Universidad Carlos III de MadridPresidente: Fernando Broncano Rodríguez.- Secretario: Miquel Àngel Essomba Gelabert.- Vocal: Cristina Delgado Garcí
