    The role of climate change in extreme rainfall associated with Cyclone Gabrielle over Aotearoa New Zealand’s East Coast

    Aotearoa is a country with good channels for communicating forecasts of extreme rainfall. Significant warning was able to be given for Cyclone Gabrielle of expected heavy rainfall and the potential for rapidly rising rivers, which may have reduced impacts. Still, the significant damage, economic cost, and loss of life can be linked to factors such as a reliance on flood protection systems and infrastructure that are not built to withstand such extreme flood events, settlements in highly flood-prone regions, and social vulnerability factors that can reduce coping capacity such as higher rates of disability and unemployment amongst Māori communities. Land use changes that reduced soil stability, combined with deforestation and forestry slashing likely also contributed to the impacts. Future efforts to reduce vulnerability should focus on addressing shortcomings such as updating infrastructure to be built to the “new normal”, and strengthening early-warning systems for impacts, social connectedness, knowledge, skills and awareness of natural hazards which can improve risk perception and increase self-protective action based on a forecast or warning. Adaptation efforts must be inclusive of a variety of stakeholder viewpoints, especially Indigenous cultural values that may differ from Pākehā views of flood risk management

    Early childhood teachers partnering with teacher educators to connect children to taiao (the natural world) through place-based learning

    Initial cycles of an action research project brought together local early childhood (ECE) teachers, and tertiary ECE teacher educators, to explore possible uses of the Ōtātara Outdoor Learning Centre (ŌOLC), adjoining the campus at Hawke’s Bay’s Te Aho a Maui Eastern Institute of Technology (EIT), Napier, New Zealand. EIT is situated below Ōtātara Pa, a historic site that holds cultural and historical significance for local Māori, specifically Ngati Pārau Hapū and Ngati Kahungunu Iwi. Education in New Zealand is underpinned by commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi (Treaty of Waitangi), ensuring that the principles; partnership, participation and protection of kaupapa Māori are supported through bicultural curricula. Māori holistic perspectives strengthen this focus and shifting understanding that place-based learning authenticates environmental approaches to education and cultural knowledge. During the first meeting, participants walked the hillside site and shared group discussions. From these conversations, the teachers identified three main themes: establishing connections between children and the physical place, new opportunities for teacher learning and challenges to implementing spontaneous teaching and learning in this unique environment. Future cycles of the research will focus on workshops for teachers to address these themes for teachers’ working with children in the space

    Cultivating Global Health: Exploring Mindfulness Through an Organisational Psychology Lens

    The interface of public health and mindfulness as presented in Oman’s review (Mindfulness for Global Public Health: Critical Analysis and Agenda) holds great promise and reveals fertile ground for future research and interdisciplinary exploration. Oman’s framework is supported by compelling arguments, ofering a balanced critique of mindfulness that identifes genuine applications and potential. This commentary notes key ideas in Oman’s paper that carry important lessons for organisational research on mindfulness and explores how organisational psychology research and theory can contribute to this proposed integration of mindfulness into global health efforts. It begins by reviewing the close relationships between work, mindfulness, and health, identifying commonalities between mindfulness, health, and organisational research. This is followed by an illustration of organisational psychology’s potential contributions to the alignment of mindfulness and health, focused on 2 of the 14 dimensions proposed by Oman (Concern for Equity and Addresses Attentional Environments). The commentary then draws on recent research and theoretical developments in mindfulness research within the workplace context to discuss the role of resilience and challenges in measuring mindfulness. Overall, this commentary aims to provide insights for organisational research while contributing to the integration of mindfulness and public health

    Effects of face masks and tele-neuropsychological assessment on memory performance for commonly used neuropsychological tests in New Zealand

    Research has shown that using face masks within a neuropsychological assessment can negatively affect an individual's recall and recognition performance (Rodriguez, 2022; Smerdon, 2022; Truong & Weber, 2021). Similarly, previous literature states that administering neuropsychological assessment through videoconferencing software has also been found to negatively affect an individual's test performance during neuropsychological assessment (Zendel et al., 2021). These effects are thought to be explained by face masks and online assessments increasing cognitive load and, therefore, affecting working memory (Byyny, 2016; Lee et al., 2022). This study aims to extend previous literature by examining whether face masks and online home-based neuropsychological assessment affect memory test performance for cognitively healthy adults in New Zealand. The tests examined in this study are Logical Memory (WMS-IV), The Rey Auditory Verbal Learning (RAVLT), Digit Span and Letter Number Sequencing (WAIS-IV). Sixty-three participants were recruited through the University of Waikato, posters/flyers, Facebook, and researcher networks. All participants were screened for eligibility; inclusion criteria to participate were English being their primary language, no current illnesses, impairments, or medical conditions that may affect cognitive functioning (Mahon et al., 2021). Participants were placed into two groups (online or in-person). Each participant completed two test sessions in a counterbalanced order; one session was completed with the examiner wearing a face mask and one unmasked. A series of two-way repeated measures ANOVAs were conducted to investigate test performance differences between mask and location conditions. Results found no evidence to support that the use of face masks and online home-based assessment significantly affected examinee memory test performance. These findings support the feasibility of using face masks and online assessments to meet pandemic mandates

    The resilience of Polar Collembola to climate change

    Polar Collembola have adapted over millions of years to an environment that is changing faster than any other on earth. Globally, Collembola (springtails) are among the most abundant and widely-distributed arthropods and are key components of species-poor polar ecosystems. Understanding the resilience of polar collembola to climate change is therefore an urgent research priority. Here we explore the links between genetic diversity and physiology in shaping the resilience of polar Collembola to climate change. I have reviewed the resilience of polar Collembola considering genetic diversity, behavioural avoidance and physiological tolerances along with an examination of the potential impacts of biotic interactions. I also explored potential recovery dynamics with reference to temperate taxa and colonisation patterns of new habitat exposed by glacial retreat. This review illustrated that polar Collembola exhibit a suite of traits that have enabled their survival in extreme conditions and may serve as pre-adaptations to changing conditions. However, if resistance capacities are insufficient, complete community level recovery following disturbances is exceedingly slow, especially among Collembola that inhabit deeper microhabitats within the soil column (deeper-dwelling). Overall, it appears that deeper-dwelling species that fail to resist climate changes may not recover in ecologically realistic timescales, especially given the projected pace of climate changes. The largest spatial scale study and analysis of the genetic diversity of Collembola from the central Canadian High Arctic location of Cambridge Bay (Ikaluktuktiak) was undertaken to refine species identifications, examine levels of population diversity, and explore the role of geological processes and glacial dynamics in shaping the current Arctic collembolan fauna. I identified 68 Barcode Index Numbers (BINs, as a proxy for species diversity) representing an estimated 43 morphological species, with 29 BINs unique to Cambridge Bay. The geographic linkages between populations across the High Arctic supported hypothesised east to west dispersal patterns in accordance with prevailing ocean currents. The physiology of five of the most abundant surface-active species from the Canadian High Arctic was explored to determine how resistant local species are likely to be to rising temperatures and increasing drought pressure. Some individuals were found to exhibit remarkably high heat tolerances (>40 ℃) with only limited cold tolerance capacities (64 % had supercooling points higher than -10 ℃). Survival rates in response to a desiccation stress were also variable among individuals (range: 1.0-13.5 hrs). This indicated that Arctic Collembola may be pre-adapted to a level of climate warming. I also explored the specific relationship between two populations of the Antarctic collembolan Gomphiocephalus hodgsoni found in the largest ice-free area in continental Antarctica, McMurdo Dry Valleys. I tested whether the genetic variation found between coastal and inland individuals of G. hodgsoni corresponded with differences in physiological tolerances of hot and cold temperatures was tested. Individuals from the population nearest the warmer coastal site had higher upper thermal limits (mean CTₘₐₓ 31.3 ℃) compared to individuals from the more inland population (mean CTₘₐₓ 27.2 ℃). However, these differences in heat tolerance weren’t significant until accounting for microhabitat temperature at time of collection (site + microhabitat at time of collection, p=0.0029). Coastal individuals also had higher mean supercooling points (coastal: -14.3 ℃; inland: -22.6 ℃, p=0.011). Under climate change associated warming warm-adapted populations may have a selective advantage relative to more cold adapted individuals, leading to changes in population genetic structure, a decline in genetic diversity, and associated decline in resilience. Collectively my thesis chapters have identified that the biggest threats to the ongoing survival of polar Collembola are sustained heat stress, desiccation stress, changing biotic interactions, and the arrival and spread of invasive species. Despite this, polar Collembola exhibit considerable levels of genetic diversity and physiological tolerances that may make them pre-adapted to climate change induced environmental changes

    Evaluating the properties, fate and individual-to-ecosystem level impacts of contrasting microplastics in freshwaters

    Microplastic particles (MPs) are fragments, fibres and other shapes derived from plastic polymers in the size range of 1–5 000 μm. Concern about the environmental impacts of MPs and their implications for human wellbeing has never been higher. Unfortunately, growth in the empirical understanding of the dynamics and impacts of MPs lags behind. This hinders the capacity of scientists, managers and policymakers to address public concerns about the true level of risk posed by MPs, and to develop effective management, policy and governance strategies for eliminating or reducing those risks. Research on the behaviour and impacts of MPs in freshwater ecosystems is especially deficient, despite their vulnerability to inputs of plastic waste (e.g. via storm water and other terrestrial runoff), and their capacity to act as key transport pathways through the landscape. This represents a substantial black box in our understanding of the dynamics of MPs from inland to the ocean. In seven research activities (5 mesocosm experiments, 1 field study and 1 literature review) we addressed two broad research questions :a) Initial fate and environmental interactions of MP particles in streams, including biofilm formation and sorption of chemical stressors b) Ecological impacts of MPs on resource consumption, growth and survival of organisms, and on key ecosystem processes. Among our key results addressing the initial fate and biofilm formation of MP particles, we found that (i) biofilm formation generally made denser particles more buoyant and caused more buoyant particles to sink faster, (ii) biofilms on polystyrene MPs supported more cyanobacteria than other polymers, and (iii) aquatic macrophytes increase MP retention by up to 94 %. Among our key results addressing the ecological impacts of MPs, we found that almost all MP shapes and polymers studied had one or more effects on stream microbial organisms and associated ecosystem processes (e.g. microbial respiration, detritus breakdown), and/or on the life history of a model macroinvertebrate detritivore. We also provide evidence that effects of MPs on microbial organisms can propagate up food-chains to affect consumer growth and fat storage. Some MP impacts were similar to those of naturally occurring organic and inorganic particles, whilst others represented a risk over and above that associated with natural particles. The number of MP impacts detected in our experiments provides sufficient basis for “moving beyond the precautionary principle” when motivating a need for monitoring and management – there is now sufficient evidence that MPs alter key aspects of the functioning of stream benthic food webs to motivate a need for action. Based on our results, we further provide a series of recommendations for monitoring, policy and management targeting MPs, and for future research

    Aspects of the root ecology of Neotyphodium endophytes in Lolium perenne

    Three different strains of the biotrophic endosymbiont, Neotyphodium, in perennial ryegrass were compared with endophyte-free ryegrass (Nil) for their effects on root herbivory, soil biota, root growth, root morphology and alkaloid and nutrient content in pot trials. Ryegrass infected with the endophyte strain, AR37, which produces janthitrem alkaloids, was toxic to a root aphid, Aploneura lentisci. Relative to Nil plants, ryegrass with Wild-type endophyte (producing the alkaloids peramine, ergovaline and lolitrem B) showed occasional resistance to A. lentisci whereas ryegrass with AR1 (producing peramine only) was highly susceptible. A high variability in root aphid populations among individual AR1 plants was related to plant genotype or a plant genotype/endophyte interaction. Differential effects of endophyte on A. lentisci were maintained under nutrient stress. Neither AR37 nor AR22 (a strain similar to AR1) in ryegrass affected feeding or survival of root-feeding larvae of the scarab Costelytra zealandica. Endophyte infection had no discernible adverse effects on populations of Collembola, oribatid mites or dorylaimid nematodes. Higher root aphid populations were associated with higher populations of Collembola and lower populations of nematodes. Rate of mycorrhizal colonisation of ryegrass infected with AR37 and Wild-type was slower than in AR1 and Nil but then proceeded rapidly to the extent that they became more heavily infected than AR1. After 2 years, infection of roots of AR1-infected plants was less than on AR37, Wild-type and Nil plants. Alkaloid content of roots was very low relative to that of leaf sheaths. Two janthitrem fractions were consistently found in roots of AR37 plants and may be the cause of toxicity to root aphid. Ergovaline and lolitrem B were only found in roots under certain conditions and adverse effects of Wild-type infection on A. lentisci could not be attributed conclusively to the presence of either alkaloid. Manipulation of herbivory by insecticide showed that root and foliar growth of AR1 and Nil plants were reduced by A. lentisci and also by an unidentified pseudococcid species infesting tillers. Root/shoot ratios were occasionally reduced in the presence of both species and in the presence of A. lentisci alone suggesting plant allocation to foliar growth in response to damage by these insects. Not all effects of endophyte infection were mediated by herbivory. AR1-infected ryegrass had a higher specific root length than Nil plants with AR37 and Wild-type intermediate between these. Insecticide treatment increased specific root length in all plants but relative differences between endophyte treatments remained the same. AR37 differed from other endophyte treatments in having a lower investment in root growth and increasing root nitrogen concentrations during summer followed by a relatively larger investment in root growth in autumn and early winter. Protection from herbivory meant that actual root biomass of AR37 plants was not less than in other treatments. Endophyte-infected plants had higher concentrations of potassium and phosphorus than Nil plants in roots but not in leaf blades. Nitrogen concentrations in roots were inversely related to root biomass resulting in AR1-infected plants having the highest concentrations of nitrogen due to the adverse effects of A. lentisci on root growth. The higher nutrient content of AR1-infected ryegrass compared with Nil may increase its susceptibility to A. lentisci. It is concluded that Neotyphodium infection has multiple but highly strain-specific effects on root ecology of perennial rye grass

    Navigating the evaluation space between schools and ERO in a transformative system

    This thesis aims to provide the reader with an example of the knowledge, practice and structures needed to effect change within the New Zealand education system in moving transformatively toward equity and excellence. This research is centred within the government organisation of the Education Review Office (ERO) which has recently changed its approach to evaluation in response to a review of the Tomorrows School’s education policy and education provision in New Zealand. In this study, evaluators who have participated in the Poutama Pounamu Blended Learning (PPBL) speak to their experiences of culturally responsive evaluation in partnership with school leaders. PPBL challenges participants to understand the role of culturally responsive practices in system transformation. Recent government policy and strategies aimed at promoting equity within education are linked and connected within the context of the research. This thesis provides one example of how a government organisation has enacted a power sharing and partnership approach intended to give effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi. The voices within the research narrate their experience of change within this government organisation and the wider education system

    Indigenous fertility in Aotearoa New Zealand: How does ethnic identity affect birth spacing and timing?

    The survival of Indigenous peoples in the CANZUS states of Canada, Australia, Aotearoa New Zealand, and the United States is nothing short of remarkable. Not only have Indigenous peoples thwarted colonial tropes of the vanishing native but, for decades, Indigenous population growth rates have significantly outpaced those of the dominant settler populations. The future survival of Indigenous peoples fundamentally rests on continued natural increase, and understanding the causes and consequences of fertility behaviour is critical. While total fertility rates for Indigenous women in CANZUS countries are relatively low, childbearing tends to be concentrated at younger ages in contrast to the dominant white populations. The fertility transitions of both settler and Indigenous populations in the CANZUS states are well documented, however, a significant gap remains: how cultural factors shape contemporary Indigenous fertility behaviours. Using Aotearoa as a case study, we explore the relationship between Māori cultural identity, birth timing, and the duration of birth intervals. We use the 1995 New Zealand Women: Family, Employment and Education survey data to further test the impact of cultural identity on birth transition rates using the piecewise exponential model and Kaplan-Meier estimates. We find that women who identify Mainly Māori (exclusively or primarily) are at greater risk of bearing much earlier to first birth but not necessarily subsequent births. However, because of the earlier start, Māori have a longer reproductive window to bear more children, and at higher birth orders still bear earlier than non-Māori. The empirical evidence strengthens our case to suggest that cultural orientation has some influence on Indigenous fertility and contributes to the development of Indigenous-centred theories of fertility and demography more broadly

    Whose responsibility is it to talk with children and young people about intersex/differences in sex development? Young people’s, caregivers’ and health professionals’ perspectives

    Introduction: Over the past two decades, there has been a shift from concealing diagnoses of sex development from impacted people to the broad principle of age-appropriate disclosure. This change is consistent with children’s rights and with general shifts towards giving children medical information and involving patients in medical decision-making. The present paper examines how health professionals, young people and caregivers with experience in this area talk about the process of telling children about a diagnosis relating to sex development. The focus is on (i) who is given the role of talking with children and young people about their medical condition and care in the context of a diagnosis relating to sex development and (ii) what strategies seem to work, and what dilemmas are encountered, in engaging children and young people in talk about their condition and healthcare. Method: Qualitative semi-structured interviews were carried out with 32 health professionals, 28 caregivers and 12 young persons recruited in the UK and Sweden, and thematic analysis was undertaken. Results: The analysis identifies strategies and dilemmas in communication and a widespread assumption that it is caregivers’ responsibility to talk with children/young people about the diagnosis. This assumption creates difficulties for all three parties. This paper raises concern about children/young people who, despite a more patient-centred care ethos, are nevertheless growing up with limited opportunities to learn to talk about intersex or differences in sex development with confidence
