Beyond the Scalpel: Assessing ChatGPT's potential as an auxiliary intelligent virtual assistant in oral surgery
AI has revolutionized the way we interact with technology. Noteworthy advances in AI algorithms and large language models (LLM) have led to the development of natural generative language (NGL) systems such as ChatGPT. Although these LLM can simulate human conversations and generate content in real time, they face challenges related to the topicality and accuracy of the information they generate. This study aimed to assess whether ChatGPT-4 could provide accurate and reliable answers to general dentists in the field of oral surgery, and thus explore its potential as an intelligent virtual assistant in clinical decision making in oral surgery.
Thirty questions related to oral surgery were posed to ChatGPT4, each question repeated 30 times. Subsequently, a total of 900 responses were obtained. Two surgeons graded the answers according to the guidelines of the Spanish Society of Oral Surgery, using a three-point Likert scale (correct, partially correct/incomplete, and incorrect). Disagreements were arbitrated by an experienced oral surgeon, who provided the final grade Accuracy was found to be 71.7%, and consistency of the experts' grading across iterations, ranged from moderate to almost perfect.
ChatGPT-4, with its potential capabilities, will inevitably be integrated into dental disciplines, including oral surgery. In the future, it could be considered as an auxiliary intelligent virtual assistant, though it would never replace oral surgery experts. Proper training and verified information by experts will remain vital to the implementation of the technology. The Effects of Suspension Training on Dynamic, Static Balance, and Stability: An Interventional Study
Background and Objectives: While suspension training devices are increasingly gaining popularity, there is limited evidence on their effects on balance, and no comprehensive assessment has been conducted. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of a 9-session suspension training program on dynamic and static balance, stability, and functional performance. Materials and Methods: A total of forty-eight healthy adults, aged between 18 and 30, participated in a 9-session suspension training program. The program included exercises targeting upper and lower body muscles as well as core muscles. Balance was comprehensively assessed using various dynamic balance tests, including the Y Balance Test (YBT) as the primary outcome, single-leg Emery test, and sideways jumping test. Static balance was evaluated through the monopedal and bipedal Romberg tests. Changes from baseline were analyzed using a one-way ANOVA test. Results: Thirty-nine participants (mean age: 21.8 years) completed the intervention. The intervention resulted in significant improvements in YBT, jumping sideways, Emery, and 30s-SST scores (p 0.05). Conclusions: Suspension training is a safe and feasible method for improving dynamic balance and functional performance in healthy, untrained young adults. The Challenge of Developing and Assessing Transversal Competences in Higher Education Engineering Courses
Current higher education is based on a competence development approach including generic competences for the integral development of students. Degrees have been designed based on this paradigm centered on lifelong learning, self-regulated learning strategies and active methodologies in which the student is the core of the formative process, aiming at contributing to develop the key competence learning to learn. In the present paper, strategies for generic competences development and evaluation are discussed in the context of engineering and technical courses and degrees. Challenges in competence assessment as well as alignment of formative assessment, methodologies and learning outcomes are discussed based on a series of experiences. Experience evidence that competence development requires designing activities oriented
towards competence development, in which learning outcomes and assessment procedures are clearly defined. The alignment of these three elements is the key for competence development since succeeding in a course by achieving the defined learning outcomes implies succeeding in the acquisition of the generic competences planned. Perspectiva de la expresión sonora en los sistemas de representación espacial de audio inmersivo para videojuegos
La presente investigación se encuentra focalizada en el estudio de la tecnología de audio y la evolución de los sistemas de representación espacial de sonido multicanal utilizada en la industria de los videojuegos en la actualidad. Desde una perspectiva técnica partiendo originariamente de los sistemas clásicos estereofónicos hasta los presentes sistemas inmersivos basados en la localización espacial de objetos acústicos, se determina cómo estos integran las nuevas tecnologías de producción de audio en videoconsolas y títulos. Genéricamente los sistemas surround de representación de sonido multicanal sólo son eficaces en el tramo horizontal, en lo relativo a la localización posicional de fuentes, esto genera unas evidentes limitaciones que coartan la experiencia comunicativa así como dificultan las interacciones plenas durante un proceso de juego. Durante la última década los sistemas de representación sonora espacial han avanzado hasta lo que en la actualidad, se conoce como audio inmersivo. Se incorporan dos variables básicas en la mejora de la experiencia sonora y la inmersión auditiva, el tratamiento de los sonidos como objetos y los beds. Los objetos son recursos sonoros aislados que pueden posicionarse por medio de coordenadas vectoriales en cualquiera de los altavoces del sistema, disponiéndose en capas o layers horizontales a diferentes alturas desde el punto de vista auditivo del oyente. A través del estudio de la implementación técnica se aprecia necesario identificar los factores auditivos determinantes en la escucha, que caracterizan el paisaje sonoro en un videojuego modificando en consecuencia la experiencia del jugador. Utilizando una metodología científica exploratoria basada en el análisis descriptivo, se utiliza la revisión doctrinal de los conceptos propios de los sistemas de representación espacial de sonido, estableciendo una correlación efectiva con la evolución tecnológica de las diversas soluciones estudiadas. Integrated laboratory classes to learn physiology in a psychology degree: impact on student learning and experience
Physiology is a fundamental discipline to be studied in most Health Science
studies including Psychology. Physiology content is perceived by students as
rather difficult, who may lack vision on how to relate it with their professional
training. Therefore, identifying novel active and more engaging pedagogical
strategies for teaching physiology to psychology students may help to fill this
gap. In this pilot study, we used the PBL methodology developed around
a clinical case to evaluate psychology students’ experience and learning in
two laboratory classes modalities. The aim of this study was to compare the
undergraduates’ preference for laboratory classes taught either independently
(cohort 1, n = 87 students) or integrated into the PBL-oriented clinical case
(cohort 2, n = 92 students) for which laboratory classes were transformed into
Integrated Laboratory Classes (ILCs). The students’ academic performance was
also evaluated to look for quantitative differences between cohorts. We found
similar overall academic scores for the Physiology course between cohorts.
Interestingly, when we compared the academic scores obtained in the theoretical
content from each cohort, we found a significant improvement (p < 0.05) in
cohort 2 where the students achieved better results as compared to cohort
1. A subset of students was asked to fill a questionnaire assessment on their
experience and found that 78.9% of them preferred integrated laboratory classes
over laboratory classes alone. They consistently reported a better understanding
of the theoretical content and the value they gave to ILCs for learning. In
conclusion, our pilot study suggests that integrating laboratory classes into
PBL-oriented clinical contexts help to retain core physiology contents and it
can be considered as an engaging learning activity worth implementing in

Effectiveness of physical exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation interventions for preventing and treating intensive care unit-acquired weakness: A systematic review of randomized controlled trial
Objective: Intensive care unit-acquired weakness is a frequent problem that develops as a secondary disorder while patients are suffering from life-threatening conditions. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of physical exercise or neuromuscular electrical stimulation interventions on (i) preventing loss of muscle mass and weakness in critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units; (ii) recovering patients discharged from the intensive care unit with acquired weakness.
Methods: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials was carried out, with studies identified in PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science. The studies included assessed muscle mass and muscle strength, and performed a time × group analysis of effects. The risk of bias assessment was performed using the Revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials.
Results: Six trials with low risk of bias examined muscle mass, muscle strength, and functionality in 182 adult patients. In critically ill patients admitted to intensive care units, both neuromuscular electrical stimulation and bed/chair cycling for five to ten days prevented significant muscle loss. neuromuscular electrical stimulation in lower and upper limbs resulted in a significant reduction in the length of the hospitalization. In addition, cycle ergometer increased muscle strength and functionality. In patients discharged from the intensive care unit with acquired weakness, both neuromuscular electrical stimulation and physical exercise interventions increased muscle strength, but only physical exercise increased functionality.
Conclusions: Physical exercise and neuromuscular electrical stimulation interventions prevent excessive muscle mass loss in critically ill patients admitted to the intensive care unit and increase muscle strength in patients discharged from the intensive care unit with acquired weakness.
