Use of video games in Physical Education and self-concept development in adolescence: sex-based differences
La adolescencia es el periodo de crecimiento donde se producen mayores cambios en todas las dimensiones que componen al ser humano. A este hecho hay que sumarle el gran uso actual de las nuevas tecnologías, concretamente para este grupo de edad, los videojuegos. El objetivo principal de este estudio fue explorar la relación entre el uso de un videojuego en el ámbito de Educación Física y el desarrollo del autoconcepto en adolescentes atendiendo a las diferencias por sexos. Además, se analizó el efecto del videojuego utilizado en la práctica de la técnica individual en baloncesto. Los análisis revelaron que no hay mejoras en el autoconcepto ni en el grupo experimental ni en el grupo control, pero que sí hubo diferencias entre sexos. Tras la intervención se observó una mejora en el autoconcepto físico y emocional mayor en las chicas que en los chicos. En el caso del baloncesto, sí se produjeron mejoras en la técnica individual del baloncesto en ambos grupos como por sexo. De este modo, se puede concluir que el uso de videojuegos en la adolescencia puede influir positivamente en la mejora de la técnica individual del baloncesto y en el autoconcepto de las chicas.Adolescence is the period of growth where major changes occur in all the dimensions that make up the human being. Also, the great current use of new technologies should be considered, specifically for this age group, the video games. The main aim of this study was to explore the relationship between the use of a video game in the field of Physical Education and the development of self-concept in adolescents, taking into account differences by sex. In addition, the effect of the video game used in the practice of the individual technique in basketball was analyzed. The analyses revealed that there was no improvement in self-concept in either the experimental or the control group, but that there were differences between sexes. Girls showed a greater improvement in physical and emotional self-concept than boys. In the case of basketball, there were improvements in individual basketball technique in both groups as well as by sex. Prediction of Patient Satisfaction after Treatment of Chronic Neck Pain with Mulligan’s Mobilization
Chronic neck pain is among the most common types of musculoskeletal pain. Manual therapy has been shown to have positive effects on this type of pain, but there are not yet many predictive models for determining how best to apply manual therapy to the different subtypes of neck pain. The aim of this study is to develop a predictive learning approach to determine which basal outcome could give a prognostic value (Global Rating of Change, GRoC scale) for Mulligan’s mobilization technique and to identify the most important predictive factors for recovery in chronic neck pain subjects in four key areas: the number of treatments, time of treatment, reduction of pain, and range of motion (ROM) increase. A prospective cohort dataset of 80 participants with chronic neck pain diagnosed by their family doctor was analyzed. Logistic regression and machine learning modeling techniques (Generalized Boosted Models, Support Vector Machine, Kernel, Classsification and Decision Trees, Random Forest and Neural Networks) were each used to form a prognostic model for each of the nine outcomes obtained before and after intervention: disability—neck disability index (NDI), patient satisfaction (GRoC), quality of life (12-Item Short Form Survey, SF-12), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI II), pain catastrophizing scale (ECD), kinesiophobia-Tampa scale of kinesiophobia (TSK-11), Pain Intensity Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and cervical ROM. Pain descriptions from the subjects and pain body diagrams guided the physical examination. Choline chloride-based natural deep eutectic solvents for the extraction and stability of phenolic compounds, ascorbic acid, and antioxidant capacity from Citrus sinensis peel
Orange peel is a great source of bioactive compounds like phenolic compounds and ascorbic acid (AA), which have high antioxidant capacity. New methodologies have called attention for their extraction employing greener solvents, as natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES). There is a lack of information about the protective role and stability of bioactive compounds in NADES. This study aims to find the most suitable NADES for the extraction of bioactive compounds from orange peel. The first step was screening eight NADES, determining its antioxidant capacity (AC), AA, total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoids (TFC). The extract stability was monitored during storage for twelve days, determining phenolic compounds, AA, and AC. The results showed that choline chloride:malic acid (ChChl:MA) (TPC: 1053 mgGAE/100 g. TFC: 94.7 mg/100 g. AA: 430 mg/100 g), and choline chloride:glycerol (TPC: 903 mgGAE/100 g. TFC: 169 mg/100 g. AA:416 mg/100 g) were the most suitable NADES for the extraction of bioactive compounds. AA and phenolic compounds are more stable in ChChl:MA. Retailoring training programmes in anaesthesia and intensive care after the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak
Purpose of review
In this review, we want to collect all the adaptations that anaesthesiology training has faced because of the health crisis and social distancing measures resulting from coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19). We reviewed new teaching tools launched during the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide and particularly those implemented by the European Society of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (ESAIC) and the European Association of Cardiothoracic Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care (EACTAIC).
Recent findings
Globally, COVID-19 has interrupted health services and all aspects of training programmes. These unprecedented changes have led to teaching and trainee support innovation tools, focusing on online learning and simulation programmes. Airway management, critical care and regional anaesthesia, have been enhanced during the pandemic, while there were major obstacles in paediatrics, obstetrics and pain medicine.
Summary
The COVID-19 pandemic has altered profoundly the functioning of health systems worldwide. Anaesthesiologists and trainees have fought on the front lines of the battle against COVID-19. As a result, training in anaesthesiology during the last 2 years has focused on managing patients in intensive care. New training programmes have been designed to continue teaching residents of this speciality, focusing on e-learning and advanced simulation. Psychological predictors of risky driving: The role of age, gender, personality traits (Zuckerman’s and Gray’s models), and decision-making styles
The present study was planned to study the relationships between age, personality (according to Zuckerman’s and Gray’s psychobiological models) and decision-making styles in relation to risky driving behaviors. The participants were habitual drivers, 538 (54.3%) men and 453 (45.7%) women, with a mean age around 45 years and mainly of middle socioeconomic status. The results indicate that the youngest men and women reported more Lapses, Ordinary violations, and Aggressive violations than the oldest men and women. Women reported more Lapses (d = −0.40), and men more Ordinary (d = 0.33) and Aggressive violations (d = 0.28) when driving. Linear and non-linear analysis clearly support the role of both personality traits and decision-making styles in risky driving behaviors. Aggressiveness, Sensitivity to Reward, Sensation Seeking played the main role from personality traits, and Spontaneous and Rational decision-making style also accounted for some variance regarding risky driving behaviors. This pattern was broadly replicated in both genders. Dramatic increase of suicidality in children and adolescents after COVID-19 pandemic start: A two-year longitudinal study
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the mental health of the youngest, worsening their emotional well-being. The demand for care in psychiatric emergencies may indirectly reflect the mental health state of children and adolescents and the emotional consequences of the pandemic. Moreover, suicidality can be considered a marker of severity in this population group.
Therefore, we have aimed to longitudinally describe the number of children and adolescents attended in the psychiatry emergency department due to suicidal ideation or attempts and, to explore differences in suicidality according to gender and age. A retrospective study was carried out in the University Hospital of San Juan, Alicante, Spain, from January 01, 2018 to December 31, 2021. A total of 138 participants under 18 years requesting psychiatric care due to suicidal ideation or attempts were included. The sample was composed by 35% of males and the mean age was 14.8 years old (SD = 2.2).
The number of cases per year range from 10 in 2018 to 88 in 2021. Attendances were significantly higher between 2021 and the three previous years. Besides, the number of attentions registered in the last 9 months of 2021 equals those that occurred in the entire previous period. Most of the cases were girls and middle adolescents.
Suicide ideation or attempts have skyrocketed in children and adolescents. This alarming increase presents a one-year lag peak from the COVID-19 outbreak and continues until the end of 2021. In Response to a Punctual Stress Male and Female Tyrosine Hydroxylase Haploinsufficient Mice Show a Deteriorated Behavior, Immunity, and Redox State
An inadequate stress response is associated with impaired neuroimmunoendocrine communication, increasing morbidity and mortality. Since catecholamines (CA) constitute one of the acute stress response pathways, female mice with an haploinsufficiency of the tyrosine hydroxylase gene (TH-HZ), the main limiting enzyme in CA synthesis, show low CA amounts, exhibiting an impairment of homeostatic systems. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a punctual stress in TH-HZ mice, determining the differences with wild-type (WT) mice and those due to sex by restraint with a clamp for 10 min. After restraint, a behavioral battery was performed, and several immune functions, redox state parameters, and CA amounts were evaluated in peritoneal leukocytes. Results show that this punctual stress impaired WT behavior and improved female WT immunity and oxidative stress, whereas in TH-HZ mice, all parameters were impaired. In addition, different responses to stress due to sex were observed, with males having a worse response. In conclusion, this study confirms that a correct CA synthesis is necessary to deal with stress, and that when a positive stress (eustress) occurs, individuals may improve their immune function and oxidative state. Relationship between Repeated Sprint Ability, Countermovement Jump and Thermography in Elite Football Players
Football is a very demanding sport which requires players to exert maximum effort, producing fatigue and eventually injuries. Thermography can be used to detect fatigue and prevent its consequences through thermal asymmetries in the bilateral body areas; however, its adequacy for elite footballers has not been widely studied. Therefore, the objective of the present investigation was to determine the suitability of thermography to detect fatigue in male football players. For this reason, twenty participants were gathered into a pair of subgroups (low [ 0.05) were found in any of the RSA test variables between low and high thermal asymmetry groups for thighs and calves. On the other hand, the low thermal asymmetry hamstring group reported a smaller percentage difference in sprints for the first sprint (%Diff) and a larger percentage difference in sprints two and three with respect to the best sprint (%Best). For CMJs, the low thermal asymmetry hamstring group reported significantly higher values post-RSA test, indicating better performance. Accordingly, thermography can provide information about performance in CMJ and RSA tests through hamstring asymmetries over 0.2 °C.
