Influence of the use of social media on patients changing dental practice: a web-based questionnaire study

    No full text
Background Recent years have seen an increase in the use of social media, by the healthcare sector, including dentistry. Indeed, social media may now be important communication tools for dental practices and patients. This work analyzes the influence of patient (male and female) use of dental practice social media on their decision to change practice. The results also provide insight into the factors patients considered important when choosing a dental practice. Methods This study was approved by the Ethics Committee of the Universidad Europea de Madrid (No. CIPI/22.022). Using a web-based questionnaire, a cross-sectional study was undertaken involving a Spanish population that made use of dental services. The questionnaire consisted of four parts covering provision of informed consent, the collection of sociodemographic data, patient use of dental practice social media, and the factors considered important when changing dental practice. Results All participants gave their informed consent regarding inclusion. No compensation was provided for participation. 588 people responded to the questionnaire, of whom 503 were eligible for inclusion. Most respondents were female (312/503; 62%). Most (151/503; 30%) last changed dental practice during the previous 2–5 years. 208/503 (41.4%) indicated that they had visited dental practice social media. 118/503 (23.5%) indicated that they had made use of such the last time they changed dental practice; 102 of these 118 (85.6%) reported their experience to have influenced their decision to change. Respondents who had changed practice in the last 5 years had interacted with dental practice social media more than those who changed over 11 years ago (p < .05), and those who changed practice in the present/past year were more influenced by these media (p < .05). The factor considered most important was 'Facilities and technology'. No gender-based differences were seen for any measured variable (p < .05). Conclusions Different factors affect the selection of a new dental practice, but respondents who changed practice in the last few years were more likely to have made use of dental practice social media, which, for some, influenced their final decision to change. Dental practices might do well to consider using social media as communication and marketing tools.Sin financiación2.9 Q2 JCR 20220.741 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

Disease-Modifying Effects of Vincamine Supplementation in Drosophila and Human Cell Models of Parkinson's Disease Based on DJ-1 Deficiency

    No full text
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is an incurable neurodegenerative disorder caused by the selective loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta. Current therapies are only symptomatic and are not able to stop or delay its progression. In order to search for new and more effective therapies, our group carried out a high-throughput screening assay, identifying several candidate compounds that are able to improve locomotor ability in DJ-1β mutant flies (a Drosophila model of familial PD) and reduce oxidative stress (OS)-induced lethality in DJ-1-deficient SH-SY5Y human cells. One of them was vincamine (VIN), a natural alkaloid obtained from the leaves of Vinca minor. Our results showed that VIN is able to suppress PD-related phenotypes in both Drosophila and human cell PD models. Specifically, VIN reduced OS levels in PD model flies. Besides, VIN diminished OS-induced lethality by decreasing apoptosis, increased mitochondrial viability, and reduced OS levels in DJ-1-deficient human cells. In addition, our results show that VIN might be exerting its beneficial role, at least partially, by the inhibition of voltage-gated sodium channels. Therefore, we propose that these channels might be a promising target in the search for new compounds to treat PD and that VIN represents a potential therapeutic treatment for the disease.Sin financiación5.0 Q2 JCR 20221.045 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2021UE

On the reform of the embezzlement offense in 2022

    No full text
The purpose of this article is the study of the reform carried out by Law 14/2022 regarding the crime of embezzlement, examining in what sense the factual assumptions of the criminal type have been modified, as well as the aggravated and attenuated types, and the meaning of the fields of custodial sentences, fines where appropriate and disqualifications. Knowing that some of the types have been recovered from previous versions of the Penal Code, we want to know which versions are involved and to what extent they have been recovered in their entirety or if they present some type of change and, where appropriate, in what sense . Additionally, reference has been made in certain media to the new requirement of the profit motive in embezzlement when, in truth, this is not a new requirement since it has been in force since 1995 until the 2015 reform, which is why the question of In what sense should it be interpreted, for which old (prior to the loss of validity) and modern jurisprudence (after the 2022 reform examined) are used. Likewise, we want to know to what extent current community legislation is complied with and violated.Sin financiaciónNo data JCR 2022No data SJR 20220,14 C2 IDR 2021UE

    No full text
The Western diet is a modern dietary pattern characterized by high intakes of pre-packaged foods, refined grains, red meat, processed meat, high-sugar drinks, candy, sweets, fried foods, conventionally raised animal products, high-fat dairy products, and high-fructose products. The present review aims to describe the effect of the Western pattern diet on the metabolism, inflammation, and antioxidant status; the impact on gut microbiota and mitochondrial fitness; the effect of on cardiovascular health, mental health, and cancer; and the sanitary cost of the Western diet. To achieve this goal, a consensus critical review was conducted using primary sources, such as scientific articles, and secondary sources, including bibliographic indexes, databases, and web pages. Scopus, Embase, Science Direct, Sports Discuss, ResearchGate, and the Web of Science were used to complete the assignment. MeSH-compliant keywords such “Western diet”, “inflammation”, “metabolic health”, “metabolic fitness”, “heart disease”, “cancer”, “oxidative stress”, “mental health”, and “metabolism” were used. The following exclusion criteria were applied: (i) studies with inappropriate or irrelevant topics, not germane to the review’s primary focus; (ii) Ph.D. dissertations, proceedings of conferences, and unpublished studies. This information will allow for a better comprehension of this nutritional behavior and its effect on an individual’s metabolism and health, as well as the impact on national sanitary systems. Finally, practical applications derived from this information are made.Sin financiación5.9 Q1 JCR 20221.291 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2021UE

Fostering scientific research in students of technical degrees: an assessment and continuation

    No full text
During the academic course 2021/2022, the authors performed a challenge-based learning (CBL) with 79 students of 1st year of technical degrees: Data Science, Physics and Industrial Engineering. This CBL lasted the whole academic year and the students worked in groups of threes to develop this challenge. Their final productions were: a scientific paper (in semester 1) and a scientific poster (in semester 2). Both contributions were orally presented; the paper was screencasted and presented in a video, while the poster was presented in situ in the classroom. Moreover, both works were evaluated by the professor and co-evaluated by the rest of the classmates. Once the academic year 2021/2022 was over, the authors were able to gather very interesting information about the perception and satisfaction of this challenge. The most relevant items were: more than 60% of the students enjoyed doing this CBL; more than 75% claimed to be proud of the results achieved; more than 90% of the students would like to work on more CBLs like this during the Degree; and finally, more than 60% consider seriously to develop a phD in the future. These good results have encouraged the authors to continue this line in future courses by elaborating a common thread with the professors of 2nd course. For example: students of 2nd year of Physics will perform a CBL based on scientific research for comparing Newtonian Mechanics to Lagrangian Mechanics. And other similar CBLs based on scientific research will be tackled by the other groups of students. Finally, the authors will track the whole set of competences to be developed and improved through all the academic year 2022/2023; in order to check whether the goals have been reached.Sin financiaciónNo data 2022UE

Interdependence in Coastal Tourist Territories between Marine Litter and Immediate Tourist Zoning Density: Methodological Approach for Urban Sustainable Development

    No full text
The coastal strip, characterized by the urbanization of coastal tourist territories (CTTs), has expanded over decades through civil engineering, altering the shoreline dynamics and creating artificial beaches crucial for tourism. To examine the relationship between extensive land use in CTTs for tourism and residences and the presence of marine litter, a specific parametric study was conducted along the coast of Tenerife, the largest island in the Canary Islands. Due to Tenerife’s geographical location and exposure to the descending Gulf Stream flow, the coastal waters in the selected zone experience waste impact at both local and global scales. However, the presence of marine litter deposited by ocean currents is at a micro level and falls outside the scope of this report. This study parameterised urban reality in study areas, and the presence of macro waste has been parameterised using standardised units of measurement. This enables the establishment of source measurements that will contribute to preventative measures against this type of coastal pollution. The interdependence between tourist zoning, civil seafront engineering works along the seafront, and marine litter presence in inaccessible and visible areas for tourists requires a methodology to better understand waste origin and loading areas. This knowledge is crucial for an effective local monitoring system. A quantitative overlay reading methodology has been designed in the urban setting through calculations of urban densities, while examining the waste in these areas’ immediate infralittoral flooring through the use of visual underwater extraction. Anticipating the type and quantity of waste in each area will allow for the implementation of effective awareness, promoting action for preventative and corrective measures at the urban level. The results show a direct dependence between urban density and the presence of waste, as well as an equation that makes it possible to anticipate the amount of waste according to urban density and its relational vector. There is no discontinuity between them, as each area is affected by others to the extent that they establish the parametric continuity conditions determining each field. Therefore, it is possible to relate them beyond a one-on-one relationship. This approach fosters sustainable tourism development, reducing pressure on the sea and enhancing the utilisation of tourism revenues in measures to address waste-related challenges and promotes sustainable tourism development in Europe’s coastal regions.2021/UEM053.9 Q2 JCR 20220.647 Q2 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

    No full text
The article makes a comparative study of the application of international law by the high courts of Argentina and Spain, regarding the models of transitional justice adopted in each case. In doing so, it adopts the theoretical and methodological approaches from Foreign Relations Law and Comparative International Law, explained in general terms in the second part. The article suggests that the degree of application of international law by the high courts of Argentina and Spain, when deciding on the possibility of criminal prosecution of crimes against humanity, is directly related to various aspects of the domestic law of each State.Sin financiación0.1 Q* JCR 20220.101 Q4 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

    Turismo, flujos migratorios y lengua

    No full text
