The 2030 power sector transition in Spain: Too little storage for so many planned solar photovoltaics?

    No full text
This work deals with the 2030 power transition in Spain following the pledges with the European Union targets of reaching climate neutrality, or net zero emissions, by 2050. Within this context, we analyze in this work the plan established by the Spanish government under the umbrella of the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan which fixes very specific objectives for the evolution of the electricity power mix for the period 2020–2050. In the case of photovoltaics, it would imply to multiply by almost a factor of four its 2020 value, reaching near 40 GW in 2030. Being photovoltaics a variable, non-dispatchable renewable energy, to take full advantage of it, it would be needed a large amount of storage capacity and backup power with very fast ramping responses. Otherwise, we would have to curtail part of the incoming solar photovoltaic energy. Based on historical data and making use of duck curves, we have also shown that the large growth of PV (2020–2030) will require needs of storage capacity and/or backup reaching values of 5 GW per hour during 4 h during the afternoon–evening. According to the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan, our results show that this plan has not yet properly foreseen these requirements and some curtailment may be needed.Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities, Spain (RTI2018-100983-B-I00).15.9 Q1 JCR 20223.232 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

Relationship of Motor Impairment with Cognitive and Emotional Alterations in Patients with Multiple Sclerosis

    No full text
Introduction: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease that, despite mainly affecting women, is more severe in men and causes motor, cognitive and emotional alterations. The objective of this study was to determine the possible relationship between motor, cognitive and emotional alterations. Materials and methods: This is a descriptive, observational and cross-sectional study, with 67 patients with MS (20 men and 47 women), who were given the following questionnaires: Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Two-Minute Walk Test (2MWT), Berg Balance Scale, Beck's Depression Inventory (BDI-II), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) and Prefrontal Symptoms Inventory (PSI) to analyze their cognitive level, body mass index (BMI) and percentage of muscle mass. In addition, regression analysis was conducted to study the relationship among variables. Results: No significant differences were found between men and women in any of the variables. Regarding the relationship between parameters, the regression analysis was statistically significant, showing an effect of age on the walking and balance performance (β ≅ -0.4, p < 0.05); in addition, there was a relationship between 2MWT and STAI A/S, indicating that both older age and a high anxiety state could impact walking performance. On the other hand, prefrontal symptoms showed moderate relationships with both anxiety and depression (β ≅ 0.6, p < 0.05); thus, high levels of anxiety and depression could increase prefrontal alterations. Conclusions: There is a relationship between motor and emotional variables. Specifically, state anxiety is related to walking resistance. No relationship was found between depression and cognitive alteration and balance or walking ability. Only age has an effect in these relationships.Catholic University Foundation San Vicente Mártir (2018-203-001)No data JCR 20220.828 Q2 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

A Four-Year Survey of Hemoparasites from Nocturnal Raptors (Strigiformes) Confirms a Relation between Leucocytozoon and Low Hematocrit and Body Condition Scores of Parasitized Birds

    No full text
Parasitism is one of the most common life strategies on Earth, where the host and the parasite establish a successful relationship and continually adapt to each other. Most of the studies on wild birds show that those with hemoparasites are usually asymptomatic due to this host–parasite coevolution, so blood parasites are often detected as incidental laboratory findings. Most of these studies have been performed mainly in passerines and migratory species, but nocturnal raptors seem to be more exposed to blood parasite vectors than other avian species due to their behavior and distribution. Blood samples were collected from 134 individuals during a four-year period to assess the occurrence of blood parasites and parasitemia in different species of nocturnal raptors and their effect on hematological parameters. Thirty-five percent (95% CI: 27.5–43.5%) of individuals included in the study tested positive for at least one hemoparasite genus, and 11.2% showed coinfection. Leucocytozoon was the genus most frequently detected (32.1%), followed by Haemoproteus (11.2%), Trypanosoma and Plasmodium (2.2% each). The Eurasian eagle-owl (Bubo bubo) was the species with the highest prevalence (94.7%). Moderate anemia and an increase in leukocyte counts were detected in the positive birds. Moreover, the positive animals showed a poor body condition score.Ministerio de Transición Ecológica y Reto Demográfico (MITECO)2.4 Q1 JCR 20220.524 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

All I missed in the therapeutic relationship: The lived experience narrative of a mental health nurse receiving mental healthcare

    No full text
Introduction The therapeutic relationship is not always functional in clinical practice due to various factors, such as lack of time, lack of job motivation, exhaustion and rejection towards the person cared for. Aim The aim of this study is to illustrate to professionals the needs of the persons they care for and how they see the world. Method The aim was achieved through the development of a lived experience narrative. Results This lived experience narrative describes the experience of a mental health nurse since her first psychotic symptoms and her perceptions of the therapeutic relationship with mental health staff in her trajectory from the first psychiatric appointment until her last contact with the community mental health services. Discussion This narrative suggests that mental health professionals are sometimes far from discovering what service users are feeling and their precise needs. This highlights the need to humanize mental healthcare.Sin financiación2.7 Q1 JCR 20220.712 Q2 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

Representing death. Between theatre and ritual in the Spanish funeral parlour

    No full text
Faced with growing discontent towards the funerary architecture of our time - in Spain, the mortuarycrematorium - as a host for the farewell and celebration of death, we wonder in this article, what exactly is wrong with these buildings, and what features of their architecture affect our perception of the funeral rite? The work is based on the sociological conception of the rite as theatre, and the analysis of 325 funeral parlours with crematorium ovens in Spain. We understand different parts of the building as scenes to the ritual -introduction, middle, and end-. In doing so, we detected recurrent features and tried to expose how the play -the celebration of death- and its actors -the mourners- are affected by trivial design choices. With an empathetic approach, the analysis is intended to help those facing the design of a funeral parlor in the future. Although the cemetery has been the subject of scholarly attention, nothing has been said about the mortuarycrematorium in Spain from a design point of view. We believe it is pertinent to study these anonymous and industrial buildings as a first step towards reflecting on their architecture and our relationship with death and its rites.Sin FinanciaciónNo data JCR 2023; No data SJR 2023; 0,02 C4 IDR 202

Regulating Response Speed Promotes Associative Learning

    No full text
Casadevante et al. (Curr Psychol 42: 4272–4285, 2023) used an objective test and found that regulation of response speed was related to better performance in a category learning task. The present study aims at analysing whether the relation between regulation of response speed and learning exists in an associative learning task. We developed ad hoc the Treasure Forest, an objective test consisting of a computerized associative learning task. We conducted a frst study with 86 university students to assess the relation between spontaneous response speed and learning. Results showed that participants who acted slowly learned more than their mates who acted faster (t (83) = 8.898, p < .001, η2 = .672). Moreover, some students who began the task acting too fast to learn decreased their response speed by the second half of the task and simultaneously their learning index improved (t (11) = 2.325, p < .05, d = .721). Hence, self-regulating the response speed was linked to associative learning. We conducted a second study to analyse the infuence of an external speed regulation on learning. The intervention group (N = 99) was prevented from clicking more than one click per second while the control group (N = 85) acted without restrictions. The intervention group achieved a higher learning index than the control group, who acted faster (t (160) = 4.828, p < .001, η2 =.117). Hence, regulating response speed promoted associative learning. We concluded that regulating response speed promoted associative learning, and we hypothesized that training self-regulation of response speed may improve learning and academic performance. Besides, we highlight the utility of employing objective test for analysing self-regulation.Sin financiación4.3 Q2 JCR 20221.463 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE

Quantitative Diet, Body Composition and Sprint Performance in Female Professional Beach Handball Players

    No full text
Women’s elite sports have experienced an exponential increase in the last decade, as has beach handball (BH). The high demands of this sport mean that athletes need to be in superior physical condition, so nutrition and body composition are determining factors in their sporting performance. For this reason, the aim of this study was to analyze, compare and correlate the most relevant variables of food intake (quantitative), body composition (focus on the bone mass characteristics) and sprint performance in female professional BH players. Thirty-three women from the National Spanish Team participated in this study. Dietary assessment, anthropometric measurements and sprint tests were performed. In general, the players had a low carbohydrate intake and adequate protein intake, with no significant differences depending on the category and playing position. For senior players, positive correlations were found between protein intake and bone mass (r = 0.584, p = 0.022), polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and muscle mass (r = 0.387, p = 0.026) and finally between fat mass and animal protein intake (r = 0.569, p = 0.027). Body composition was similar in both categories; however, goalkeepers had the highest fat (22.6 ± 3.86%, 16.2 ± 4.84 kg) component (vs. wings: 17.4 ± 3.53%, p = 0.031/vs. specialists: 11.1 ± 1.91 kg, p = 0.034), and senior players had higher muscle mass (kilograms). It is worth noting the finding that players with a greater trochanter height had significantly lower sprint times (p = 0.014 and p = 0.048 for 5 and 10 m, respectively). Certain bone characteristics, such as iliospinale height, biacromial and bimalleolar diameters, mesosternal perimeter and biceps skinfold, differ depending on the position. In addition, the greater speed of the senior players may be due to the greater specialization, number of training sessions performed and specific bone characteristics, such as trochanter height. In this regard, the data provided in this study will assist with establishing criteria for the selection of talent for this sporting discipline.Sin financiación5.9 Q1 JCR 20221.291 Q1 SJR 2022No data IDR 2022UE
