Apparent Diffusion Coefficient as an Early Prognostic Factor of Response to Treatment with Androgen Deprivation Therapy and Radiotherapy in Patients with Prostate Cancer
Purpose/Objective(s)
To analyzed the Apparent Diffusion Coefficient (ADC) as an early prognostic factor of response in patients with prostate cancer treated with radiotherapy (RT) and androgen deprivation therapy (ADT).
Materials/Methods
All prostate cancer patients classified as high or very high and unfavorable intermediate-risk according to NCCN criteria that received ADT and RT between 2008 and 2019 in whom an multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) was performed were included. The ADC values were calculated by mpMRI performed 6 months after RT. We assessed the differences in the mean ADC values between patients with or without progression and/or local relapse after 10 years. Receiver-operating characteristics (ROC) analysis were used to obtain ADC cut-off values to predict 10y-progression-free survival and 10y-local progression survival in these patients. Additionally, differences in ADC values between diagnosis and post-RT were assessed.
Results
We retrospectively evaluated 98 consecutive patients, 25(25.5%) patients were intermediate-risk and 73 (74.5%) patients were high-risk. The median PSA at diagnosis was 10.15ng/ml [6.93-21]. After a mean follow-up of 95.36 months (SD:30.54), 19 (19.39%) patients progressed,10y biochemical relapse-free survival was 76.5%, 10y-PFS was 75.6%, 10y-LRFS was 93.8%, 10y metastasis-free survival was 85.5%, 10y overall survival was 89.5%. The mean ADC values at diagnosis and post-RT was 0.81 ± 0.18 vs 1.30 ± 0.18 x10-3 mm2/sec, respectively (p95% between diagnosis and post-RT had a lower risk of relapses (4.76% vs.26.56%, p < 0.001).
Conclusion

The essential Jesús Huerta de Soto: an analysis of his contributions to economics and social thought
Professor Huerta de Soto’s name has achieved great recognition among Spanish-speaking Austrians in recent times. Nevertheless, his thought and conclusions remained mostly unknown to English-speaking Austrians. This article focuses on his thought and contributions over a wide career in economics, law, history, and all the social science branches. We will have the opportunity to introduce his conclusions about central banking, entrepreneurship, history of economic thought, and political philosophy. As we can see, his conclusions encompass many disciplines of social science in a clear application of the Austrian method. Análisis de los estilos de aprendizaje predominantes en estudiantes de gestión deportiva en España y su asociación con las competencias profesionales requeridas en diferentes entornos laborales
El estudio de los estilos de aprendizaje y su interrelación con las competencias en gestión deportiva aún no ha sido señalado en la literatura científica y, más concretamente, en España. El objetivo fue evaluar los estilos de aprendizaje predominantes y analizar su relación con las principales dimensiones competenciales entre los estudiantes de gestión deportiva. Se diseñó un estudio observacional y transversal. Se recabaron datos de una muestra de 52 estudiantes del primer curso del Grado en Gestión Deportiva de la Universidad Europea (19.65±1.76 años). Se emplearon dos instrumentos: CHAEA-36, sobre estilos de aprendizaje (Honey Alonso, 2005) y el cuestionario de dimensiones competenciales para la gestión deportiva (Fahrner y Schüttoff, 2020). El estilo de aprendizaje predominante fue el reflexivo. El estilo teórico tuvo una influencia sobre la capacidad de carga (β = 0.263; IC 95 %, 0.115 a 0.411; p=0.001), la resolución de conflictos (β = 0.259; IC 95 %, 0.038 a 0.48; p=0.024) y habilidades de liderazgo (β = 0.351; IC 95 %, 0.14 a 0.561; p=0.002). El estilo teórico influyó sobre competencias clave en gestión deportiva. Diseño, producción y comercialización de productos cosméticos
La actividad transdisciplinar entre los estudiantes del Grado en Farmacia y Marketing tiene como objetivo fomentar la cooperación entre distintos sectores profesionales a través de la creación de formulaciones cosméticas y el desarrollo de su programa de marketing. De este modo, se ofrece a los estudiantes de ambos grados la visión holística necesaria para su futura práctica profesional.
Esta actividad se desarrolla de manera secuencial. En este proceso, los alumnos de Farmacia proponen una serie de productos cosméticos que desean fabricar, y solicitan a los estudiantes de Marketing que desarrollen un proyecto de innovación para la comercialización de estos productos. Esto incluye realizar un análisis de mercado y diseñar una campaña de marketing para los productos elaborados, adaptándolos a los requerimientos del cliente, en este caso, estudiantes de Farmacia, atendiendo a las necesidades del público objetivo.
Los resultados obtenidos en las encuestas de satisfacción demuestran cómo la actividad resulta beneficiosa para el aprendizaje de los estudiantes de ambas titulaciones, ya que fomenta la comunicación y colaboración entre profesionales de sectores muy diferentes. Asimismo, también se aprecia cómo esta actividad permite estimular la creatividad de los alumnos para explorar nuevos espacios tanto a nivel tecnológico como de mercado.Sin financiaciónSPI 2022UE
Contact sex offenders with adult and minor victims: Psychopathological and criminological differences
Background
Effective classification of individuals who commit sexual offences is important for their assessment, treatment, and risk management. Victim age has often been used as a distinguishing factor between perpetrators.
Objective
This study aimed to analyse the distinctive psychopathological and criminological characteristics of contact sexual offenders with adult and minor victims.
Participants and setting
The study involved 97 adult males who were serving a prison sentence in Spain for at least one contact sexual offence against an adult or a minor.
Methods
Researchers gathered data on criminological variables concerning the offender, victim, and modus operandi from prison records and interviews. Participants completed the Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventory-III (MCMI-III) in a second session, and between-group differences were analysed.
Results
Sex offenders with minor victims (SOMV) had significantly lower scores than sex offenders with adult victims (SOAV) on the Antisocial (r = −0.283, p = .005) and Sadistic (r = −0.209, p = .04) personality subscales, and on the Alcohol (r = −0.426, p < .001) and Drug dependence (r = −0.332, p = .001) syndrome subscales. SOAV were also more likely to use violence and/or intimidation, use a weapon, offend against female victims, offend against an intimate partner, commit their offences in public places, serve other ongoing prison sentences, and report a history of alcohol and substance abuse. SOMV were older and more likely to offend against family members.
Conclusions

Survival after allogeneic transplantation according to pretransplant minimal residual disease and conditioning intensity in patients with acute myeloid leukemia
Background: The measurement of minimal residual disease (MRD) by multiparametric flow cytometry (MFC) before hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a powerful prognostic factor. The interaction of pretransplant MRD and the conditioning intensity has not yet been clarified.
Objective: The aim of this study is to analyze the transplant outcomes of patients with AML who underwent HSCT in complete remission (CR), comparing patients with positive MRD (MRD+) and negative MRD (MRD−) before HSCT, and the interaction between conditioning intensity and pre-HSCT MRD.
Study design: We retrospectively analyzed the transplant outcomes of 118 patients with AML who underwent HSCT in CR in a single institution, comparing patients with MRD+ and MRD− before HSCT using a cutoff of 0.1% on MFC, and the interaction between conditioning intensity and pre-HSCT MRD.
Results: Patients with MRD+ before HSCT had a significantly worse 2-year (2y) event-free survival (EFS) (56.5% vs. 32.0%, p = 0.018) than MRD− patients, due to a higher cumulative incidence of relapse (CIR) at 2 years (49.0% vs. 18.0%, p = 0.002), with no differences in transplant-related mortality (TRM) (2y-TRM, 19.0% and 25.0%, respectively, p = 0.588). In the analysis stratified by conditioning intensity, in patients who received MAC, those with MRD− before HSCT had better EFS (p = 0.009) and overall survival (OS) (p = 0.070) due to lower CIR (p = 0.004) than MRD+ patients. On the other hand, the survival was similar in reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) patients regardless of the MRD status.
Conclusions: Patients with MRD+ before HSCT have worse outcomes than MRD− patients. In patients who received MAC, MRD− patients have better EFS and OS due to lower CIR than MRD+ patients, probably because they represent a more chemo-sensitive group. A potential therapeutic strategy based on acute oxidative stress induction for wild-type NRF2/KEAP1 lung squamous cell carcinoma
Extensive efforts have been conducted in the search for new targetable drivers of lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC); to date, however, candidates remain mostly unsuccessful. One of the oncogenic pathways frequently found to be active in LUSC is NFE2L2 (NRF2 transcription factor), the levels of which are regulated by KEAP1. Mutations in NFE2L2 or KEAP1 trigger NRF2 activation, an essential protector against reactive oxygen species (ROS). We hypothesized that the frequency of NRF2 activation in LUSC (∼35 %) may reflect a sensitivity of LUSC to ROS. Results from this study reveal that whereas tumors containing active forms of NRF2 were protected, ROS induction in wild-type NFE2L2/KEAP1 LUSC cells triggered ferroptosis. The mechanism of ROS action in normal-NRF2 LUSC cells involved transient NRF2 activation, miR-126-3p/miR-126-5p upregulation, and reduction of p85β and SETD5 levels. SETD5 levels reduction triggered pentose pathway gene levels increase to toxic values. Simultaneous depletion of p85βPI3K and SETD5 triggered LUSC cell death, while p85βPI3K and SETD5 overexpression rescued survival of ROS-treated normal-NRF2 LUSC cells. This shows that the cascade involving NRF2 > miR-126-3p, miR-126-5p > p85βPI3K and SETD5 is responsible for ROS-induced cell death in normal-NRF2 LUSC. Ecological design for urban regeneration in industrial metropolitan areas: the Santa Cruz refinery case
Ecological design is crucial in shaping contemporary, resilient, and livable cities. The Santa Cruz de Tenerife Refinery, a prominent landmark in the Mid-Atlantic, serves as an exemplary case study for understanding advanced metropolitan processes and integrating trans-scalar, transdisciplinary, and nature-based solutions (NBS) practices into urban contexts. This article explores the challenges of transforming obsolete industrial areas, including the refinery’s decommissioning process, its port, and industrial heritage value, and their relationship with the sea, into vibrant urban cores. It examines innovative strategies for land use, decontamination, and urban resilience, which are vital for fostering adaptability and recovery from natural and anthropogenic disasters. The use of Audiovisual Distraction tools in the Dental setting for pediatric subjects with special Healthcare needs: A review and proposal for a multi-session model for behavioral management
Background: A Special Health Care Need (SHCN) is characterized by any type of physical, mental, sensorial, cognitive, emotional, or developmental condition that requires medical treatment, specialized services, or healthcare interventions. These conditions can negatively impact oral health as SHCN children can hardly cooperate or communicate and experience higher levels of dental fear/anxiety, which interfere with regular appointments. The present narrative review aims to analyze the use of audiovisual (AV) tools in dental setting for the management of SHCN children during dental treatment and to evaluate their effectiveness in anxiety/behavior control from the child, dentist, and care-giver perspectives. This analysis leads to the proposal of a new multi-session model for the behavioral management of SHCN pediatric subjects. Methods: An electronic search on the MEDLINE/Pubmed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases was carried out and through this analysis, a new model was proposed, the “UNISA-Virtual Stepwise Distraction model”, a multi-session workflow combining traditional behavior management and the progressive introduction of AV media to familiarize the SHCN child with dental setting and manage behavior. Results: AV tools helped in most cases to manage SHCN behavior and decreased stress in both the dentist and child during dental treatments. Care-givers also welcomed AV distractors, reporting positive feedback in using them during future treatments. Conclusions: The present narrative review found increasing evidence of the use of AV media for SHCN pediatric subjects as distraction tools during dental treatment. Unlocking value from waste: a comparative study of orange peel extraction methods using choline chloride-based natural deep eutectic solvents
Green chemistry is a fundamental aspect of the food industry in the extraction of bioactive compounds from plant byproducts, through the utilization of sustainable methodologies, such as ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE), enhancing food safety. Conventional solvents are being replaced by green alternatives, including natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES), which are nontoxic and biodegradable. The objective of this study is to compare UAE with heating-stirring (HS) methods for the extraction of bioactive compounds from orange peels using NADES. The antioxidant capacity (AC) of the extracts will be compared by three methods [oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), DPPH, and ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP)], also the phenolic profile will be studied, and the stability of the extracted compounds will also be assessed. The AC results demonstrated that UAE yielded higher than HS with ChChl/Fruc and ChChl/LA. The FRAP revealed differences among NADES, with ChChl/LP/MA exhibiting the highest. ORAC method identified ChChl/LP/MA and ChChl/LA as the most efficient. The UAE showed higher extraction yield compared to HS, particularly for caffeic acid and hesperidin, where ChChl/Fruc and ChChl/LA where the best NADES. Concerning stability, HS yielded a more stable AC than UAE, except ChChl/Fruc. UAE demonstrated superior stability for phenolic compounds in ChChl/LP/MA and ChChl/Gly, whereas HS showed greater efficacy for ChChl/LA. In conclusion, the selection of extraction methods and solvents has a impact on the yield, stability, and AC of bioactive compounds.
