Is it really over when it is over? physical, mental and emotional health status of long‐term breast cancer survivors compared to healthy matched controls
This study aimed to assess pain, fitness condition, physical activity (PA) level, comorbidities, cancer-related fatigue (CRF), mood state and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in long-term breast cancer survivors (LTBCS) compared to women without cancer history, matched by age, weight, height, and educational level.Methods
A cross-sectional study conducted in Granada between April 2018 and July 2023 involved 80 LTBCS and 80 matched controls. Pain, fitness condition, PA level, comorbidities, CRF, mood state, and HRQoL were evaluated ≥ 5 years post-diagnosis using validated instruments.Results
LTBCS, compared to the controls, reported significantly higher levels of “pain intensity and interference”, CRF (in all domains and > 40% exhibited moderate-to-severe fatigue levels), “sadness-depression”, “anxiety”, “anger/hostility”, and “symptom scales” (All: P = .000 to .027). Moreover, 66.25% of LTBCS not only did not reach recommended PA levels (P = .035), but also presented significantly lower levels of “general physical fitness”, “muscular strength”, “happiness”, “functioning scales” (except “emotional functioning”), and “global health status” (All: P = .000 to .048).Conclusion
LTBCS still suffer from physical (pain, fitness condition, and CRF), both mental and emotional (sadness-depression, anxiety and anger/hostility) long-term side effects as well as multiple HRQoL issues (including lower levels of physical functioning and higher levels of symptoms). Responsiveness of monopodal postural stability tests in recreational athletes
Stabilometry, the modified Star Excursion Balance Test (mSEBT) or the Emery balance test (EBT) are reported in the literature to reflect changes after an intervention in monopodal postural stability. Even so, the responsiveness of those tests has not been evaluated after an instability training programme or analysed using multiple statistical indicators of responsiveness. The main aim of this study was to analyse the responsiveness of the stabilometry, mSEBT or EBT. Methods: Thirty healthy recreational athletes performed a 4-week programme with three weekly sessions of instability training of the dominant lower limb and were evaluated using stabilometry, mSEBT, and EBT tests. Responsiveness was quantified based on internal and external responsiveness. Results: EBT and all parameters in mSEBT for the dominant lower limb showed large internal responsiveness (SRM > 0.8). Furthermore, mSEBT values for the non-dominant lower limb (except anterior displacement) also experienced significant changes with an associated large internal responsiveness. None of the stabilometry platform parameters showed a significant change after the intervention. The ability of the EBT to discriminate between the dominant and non-dominant lower limb (i.e., trained vs untrained, respectively) was generally acceptable (AUCs = 0.708). However, none of the parameters of the mSEBT test showed an acceptable AUC. Misconduct among Spanish grassroots soccer players: evidence for their management
Identifying antisocial behaviour among child and youth players is crucial for managing and fostering a safe, supportive, and enjoyable sport. This study aimed to describe and analyse the disciplinary sanctions received by players in Spanish grassroots soccer competitions (6-18 years old). Referee records from 275,844 games across 1,401 league competitions during five subsequent seasons were examined using ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc test. A total of 53,031 sanctions were documented, primarily mild (93.33%). The most common mild sanctions resulted from card accumulation (41.8%), double warning (24.5%), violent or dangerous play (6.5%), and contemptuous and inconsiderate attitudes towards referees (5.5%). Assaults (3.3%) and insults and serious offences (2.7%) received serious sanctions from referees. Severe sanctions (0.004%) were anecdotal. Furthermore, we found significantly (p < .05) more sanctions in 11-a-side soccer than in 8-a-side, in boys versus girls’ categories, and U18 and U15 boys’ groups compared to younger age categories.The strategies adopted for improving sportsmanship should especially target players in the U18 and U15 male categories and those who are repeat offenders. A case study on pharmaceutical residues and antimicrobial resistance genes in Costa Rican rivers: A possible route of contamination for feline and other species
In this investigation, the presence of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals in Costa Rican surface waters, specifically in regions near feline habitats, was examined. The study revealed that 47% of the water samples contained detectable traces of at least one antibiotic. Ciprofloxacin and norfloxacin were the most frequently detected compounds, each with a detection rate of 27%. Other antibiotics, such as erythromycin, roxithromycin, and trimethoprim, were also found but at lower frequencies, around 14%. Notably, all antibiotic concentrations remained below 10 ng/L, with ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and erythromycin showing the highest concentrations. Furthermore, the investigation revealed the presence of non-antibiotic pharmaceutical residues in the water samples, typically at concentrations below 64 ng/L. Tramadol was the most frequently detected compound, present in 18% of the samples. The highest concentrations were observed for acetaminophen and tramadol, measuring 64 and 10 ng/L, respectively. Comparing these findings with studies conducted in treated wastewater and urban rivers, it became evident that the concentrations of antibiotics and pharmaceuticals were notably lower in this study. While previous research reported higher values, the limited number of studies conducted in protected areas raises concerns about the potential environmental impact on biodiversity.
In summary, these results emphasize the importance of monitoring pharmaceutical residues and antimicrobial resistance genes ARGs in vulnerable ecosystems, especially those in close proximity to feline habitats in Costa Rica. Additionally, the study delved into the detection of (ARGs). All tested water samples were positive for at least one ARG, with the blaTEM gene being the most prevalent at 82%, followed by tetS at 64% and qnrB at 23%. Moreover, this research shed light on the complexity of evaluating ARGs in environmental samples, as their presence does not necessarily indicate their expression. Apnoeic oxygenation during paediatric tracheal intubation: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background: Supplemental oxygen administration by apnoeic oxygenation during laryngoscopy for tracheal intubation is intended to prolong safe apnoea time, reduce the risk of hypoxaemia, and increase the success rate of first-attempt tracheal intubation under general anaesthesia. This systematic review examined the efficacy and effectiveness of apnoeic oxygenation during tracheal intubation in children.
Methods: This systematic review and meta-analysis included randomised controlled trials and non-randomised studies in paediatric patients requiring tracheal intubation, evaluating apnoeic oxygenation by any method compared with patients without apnoeic oxygenation. Searched databases were MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane Library, CINAHL, ClinicalTrials.gov, International Clinical Trials Registry Platform (ICTRP), Scopus, and Web of Science from inception to March 22, 2023. Data extraction and risk of bias assessment followed the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) recommendation.
Results: After initial selection of 40 708 articles, 15 studies summarising 9802 children were included (10 randomised controlled trials, four pre-post studies, one prospective observational study) published between 1988 and 2023. Eight randomised controlled trials were included for meta-analysis (n=1070 children; 803 from operating theatres, 267 from neonatal intensive care units). Apnoeic oxygenation increased intubation first-pass success with no physiological instability (risk ratio [RR] 1.27, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.03-1.57, P=0.04, I2=0), higher oxygen saturation during intubation (mean difference 3.6%, 95% CI 0.8-6.5%, P=0.02, I2=63%), and decreased incidence of hypoxaemia (RR 0.24, 95% CI 0.17-0.33, P<0.01, I2=51%) compared with no supplementary oxygen administration.
Conclusion: This systematic review with meta-analysis confirms that apnoeic oxygenation during tracheal intubation of children significantly increases first-pass intubation success rate. Exploring the Implications of Inter-Limb Asymmetries on Sprint, Agility, and Jump Performance in Young Highly-Trained Basketball Athletes: Is There a Relevant Threshold?
Background and Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the magnitude of vertical jump
inter-limb asymmetries among young highly-trained basketball athletes and to analyze its impact
on sport performance, specifically in sprints, agility, and vertical jumps. Materials and Methods: A
unilateral countermovement jump (CMJ) was employed to determine Inter-limb Index Asymmetry
(IAI) in 320 participants aged from 14 to 18 years, from the Valencia Basket youth academy. IAI was
categorized into three groups: 0–9.9%, 10–14.9%, and >15%. The relationship between IAI and performance
variables was analyzed through correlation studies (Pearson or Spearman’s). The influence
of IAI magnitude was assessed using ANOVA or Kruskal–Wallis analysis, with leg dominance as
a covariable. SPSS Statistics version 26 was used for analysis. Results: Among all the participants,
the mean IAI was 10.6%. Correlation studies revealed non-significant values (p < 0.05) between
IAI and sport performance variables. The three IAI magnitude groups did not show statistically
significant differences in sprint, agility, and jump outcomes. Leg dominance did not seem to influence
performance outcomes, except for unilateral CMJ. Conclusions: The results obtained challenge the
assumption that an IAI above 10% negatively affects sprint, agility, or jump performance in young
basketball athletes. Notably, the magnitude of IAI did not influence sport performance parameters,
suggesting that the 10–15% threshold from previous studies may not be applicable to this population.
The study emphasizes the need to understand lower-limb asymmetries in the context of specific sport

Molecular dynamics study of paraffin/polyethylene blends as phase change materials for energy efficiency in buildings
The greenhouse gas emissions and global energy consumption associated with construction materials can be greatly reduced by incorporating phase change materials into buildings. These materials can absorb and release energy during a phase transition, thus reducing the energy consumption while achieving human thermal comfort. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to study the miscibility of both linear and branched polyethylene with two types of paraffin (octadecane and hexatriacontane) at two different temperatures. The results showed that blending was better at high temperatures for both polymers, and branched polyethylene was more miscible with both paraffins than linear polyethylene was. Hexatriacontane exhibited better blending characteristics. From the molecular dynamics results, we concluded that linear polyethylene/paraffin blends were more suitable as phase change materials in buildings than branched polyethylene/paraffin blends, as they were miscible at high temperatures but separated into two phases at ambient temperature. The optimal blends were subsequently incorporated into a cement model to study their influence on the mechanical properties of this construction material. Cannabinoids for Acute Pain Management: Approaches and Rationale
Purpose of the Review: Acute pain management remains a challenge and postoperative pain is often undermanaged despite many available treatment options, also including cannabinoids. Recent Findings: In the light of the opioid epidemic, there has been growing interest in alternative care bundles for pain management, including cannabinoids as potential treatment to decrease opioid prescribing. Despite the lack of solid evidence on the efficacy of cannabinoids, their use among patients with pain, including those using opioids, is currently increasing. This use is supported by data suggesting that cannabinoids could potentially contribute to a better pain management and to a reduction in opioid doses while maintaining effective analgesia with minimum side effects. Summary The scientific basis for supporting the use of cannabis is extensive, although it does not necessarily translate into relevant clinical outcomes. The use of cannabinoids in acute pain did not always consistently show statistically significant results in improving acute pain.
