Material based limitations on charge transport in GaAs based LEDs structures at low temperatures
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) based on gallium arsenide (GaAs) are widely used in optoelectronic applications due to their direct bandgap, high efficiency, and good radiative recombination properties. Recently, there has been increased interest in GaAs LEDs for emerging applications beyond lighting, particularly in cryogenic data transmission and thermophotonic cooling applications. This study investigates the material-based limitations on charge transport in GaAs based LED structures for low temperature applications, motivated by the potential use of GaAs in cryogenic systems such as data transmission in quantum computing. This thesis focussed on three key elements potentially affecting the charge transport: (i)electrical contacts, (ii)semiconductor material and (iii)barrier at GaAs/GaInP heterostructure. Contact resistivity was evaluated using transmission line model (TLM) methods over a range from 5 K to room temperature. The temperature dependencies of charge carrier properties of the semiconductor material and barrier height of the heterostructure were studied over a temperature range from 120 K to 350 K.
Results showed that, for the selected fabrication flow and materials, the contact resistivity and material parameters would be unlikely to prevent low temperature applications. However, an unexpected large barrier height between n- GaAs and n- GaInP, as compared to one estimated from band discontinuity, suggested that both n- and p-type interfaces could affect the efficiency of final devices at temperatures below room temperature. This is in partial contrast with original expectations and may call for finding alternative strategies to fully remove the effects of barrier at low temperature.
These findings highlight key factors affecting the performance of GaAs based LEDs under low temperature conditions and generally support their feasibility for cryogenic applications
How much upfront-embodied GHG emissions can wooden buildings save-displacement factors for wooden buildings
Wood can be a reasonable building material replacement for major greenhouse gas (GHG)-emission sources, such as concrete, steel, and masonry. Here, we conduct a detailed evaluation of the upfront-embodied GHG (UE-GHG) emissions benefits of wood compared with the other construction materials. By using lifecycle assessment (LCA) data from 92 case buildings in the literature, we provide an extensive synthesis of the displacement factor (DF) for wooden buildings. We use DF as a reference number for comparable building LCA studies to understand the GHG-emission benefits of wooden buildings. A pattern of lower UE-GHG emissions was found in our study; on average, the wooden buildings showed approximately 23% lower UE-GHG emissions than their non-wooden counterparts. Generally, low-rise (especially detached) buildings were found to have better DF values compared to mid-to-high-rise buildings. In addition, the process-specific LCA study found higher DF values for wooden buildings compared with input–output LCA studies that mostly base their calculations on average material manufacturing data. Finally, it is important to note that the DF values of different case buildings ranged from −0.15 to 0.69, which highlights the importance of careful technical considerations and efficient design of wooden buildings in order to maximize their DF benefits. We highlight the emergence of hybrid (structure) wooden buildings, especially for mid- to high-rise buildings, in recent years and emphasize the urgent need for a hybrid building definition because current practice allows the branding of low-wood-content buildings as wooden buildings.Peer reviewe

Natural Language Processing Techniques for Biographical Data Extraction
This bachelor's thesis introduces and evaluates natural language processing (NLP) techniques used for extracting biographical data from text. Biographical data refers to information related to individuals, such as family relations, lifespan, and occupation. Such data can be collected from various sources, including biographies and Wikipedia. The extracted biographical data can be stored in databases, providing an efficient way to process information for researchers in history, digital humanities, and other interested parties. This thesis examines which NLP techniques are most essential for biographical data extraction, what challenges their application entails, and how the extracted data can be utilized. Additionally, the core NLP techniques are explored in more detail. The study is conducted as a literature review, utilizing journal articles and conference papers that focus on biographical data extraction, NLP techniques for information extraction, and their integration.
Based on the literature review, the key NLP techniques used for biographical data extraction are named entity recognition (NER) and relation extraction (RE). NER identifies entities in text, such as people's names, locations, and organizations. RE extracts information about relationships between these entities, such as family relations and places of birth. Both NER and RE can be implemented using rule-based, machine learning-based, or neural network-based approaches. The most recent and accurate techniques rely on neural networks, as they are capable of recognizing complex structures in text. However, NER and RE also face various challenges, such as language ambiguity and the limited availability of training data, which are often context- and language-dependent. Therefore, the choice of NER and RE approaches should be guided by the specific requirements of the application.Tämä kandidaatintyö esittelee ja arvioi luonnollisen kielen käsittelytekniikoita (engl. natural language processing, NLP), joita käytetään biografisen datan louhintaan tekstistä.
Recycling of plastic-coated cartons in hydropulping using pretreatments
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The AuthorsPlastic-coated cartons and multilayer packaging pose significant challenges in recycling due to prolonged pulping times, high energy consumption, and fiber loss. Efficient fiber-plastic separation enables both fiber reuse and plastic recycling, contributing to sustainability goals. This study evaluates the combined effects of hydraulic pressure and perforation as pretreatments to enhance pulping efficiency, reduce energy consumption, and optimize separation. Hydraulic pressure at 0.2 bar achieved 75 % swelling in 10 min and reduced pulping time by 33–67 % across high- and low-consistency pulpers. Perforation enabled swelling of entire cartons without shredding, improving swelling by 30–60 % and reducing pulping time by 25–50 % depending on the pulper type. Together, these pretreatments could cut energy consumption by up to 50 %, translating to annual savings of approximately 1 GWh for factories processing 100 kt of pulp. These findings demonstrate the scalability and economic potential of pretreatments for more sustainable carton recycling.Peer reviewe
Sustainability reporting practices in listed real estate companies: Compliance with corporate sustainability reporting directive in Finland and Sweden
Sustainability reporting has become a regulatory requirement for businesses, including the real estate sector, which is responsible for a large share of carbon emissions and energy consumption. The European Union introduced the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) to standardize reporting practices. The transition from the previous Non-Financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) to the CSRD has expanded reporting obligations and introduced structured European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS).
This study aims to examine how listed real estate companies in Finland and Sweden comply with CSRD’s requirements by analysing current reporting practices and identifying gaps in alignment with the ESRS. The study employs qualitative content analysis to evaluate sustainability reports from ten listed real estate companies in Finland and Sweden. The analysis follows the ESRS framework focusing on the mandatory disclosure requirements.
The findings of this study indicate that the analyzed Finnish and Swedish listed real estate companies are not in full compliance with the mandatory reporting requirements set forth by the CSRD and ESRS. Key challenges identified in the analysis include materiality assessment and value chain reporting, where disclosure levels remain particularly low. Governance and stakeholder engagement emerged as relatively stronger areas of reporting, although notable gaps still persist. The study also suggests a correlation between company size and the comprehensiveness of sustainability disclosures, with larger companies generally providing more extensive information. However, report comparability remains a critical concern: even among companies using the same reporting frameworks, significant differences in the content and depth of disclosures were observed.
This study contributes to the emerging literature on the CSRD and ESRS by offering an empirical assessment of sustainability reporting practices in the real estate sector In Finland and Sweden. It also provides practical insights for companies preparing for CSRD compliance
Non-hydrolytic modification of cellulose
Cellulose, one of Earth's most abundant biopolymers, plays a crucial role in developing eco-friendly materials. However, traditional cellulose production methods rely on hydrolysis, that involves hazardous chemicals and uses excess amounts of water. Non-hydrolytic protein-based processes offer a greener alternative devoid of harmful chemicals and wastewater, although chal-lenges such as cost and efficiency remain.
This thesis reviews non-hydrolytic enzymatic and protein-based modifications of cellulose, focusing on approaches like TEMPO/Laccase/O2 (TLO) -systems, lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMOs), and expansins. Furthermore, their parameters, applications in advanced biomaterials and limitations are explored. Most interestingly, these applications include materials used for non-toxic scaffolds for tissue engineering and production of anti-microbial, high tensile nanopapers for the medical industry. Despite providing comparable results compared to current methods at a laboratory scale, challenges remain in terms of economic feasibility, enzyme degradation, and the lack of reliable industrial quantification methods. Additionally for expansins, which significantly enhance cellulose accessibility and enzymatic efficiency, research is lacking. Therefore, the full extent of their application remains uncertain.
However, this thesis outlines methods such as carbonyl-selective labeling for LPMOs and using selective affinities of different substrates to fully utilize produced nanofibers which showcases the potential for overcoming or at least remedying these limitations. Further research into non-hydrolytic protein-based processes and novel analytical techniques could drive advancements in the large-scale production of sustainable cellulose-based biomaterials. This thesis argues for this continued investigation and development of non-hydrolytic cellulose modification as a pathway toward greener material science and sustainable industry transformation.
LPMO:jen osalta teollisuuteen soveltuvien kvantifiointimenetelmien puute on suurin pullonkaula niiden soveltamisessa. Tämän lisäksi selluloosan rakenteen avoimuuden lisäämiseen ja entsymaattisen muokkauksen tehokkuuden parantamiseen liitettyjen ekspansiinien osalta tutkimus on rajallista. Vaikka alustavat tutkimustuloksen osittavat lupausta, niiden vaikutusmekanismit sekä yhteisvaikutuksen etenkin ei-hydrolyytisten entsyymien kanssa vaativat syvempää selvitystä. Tämän vuoksi niiden soveltamisen koko laajuus on toistaiseksi epävarmaa.
Tässä kandidaatintyössä esitellään kuitenkin menetelmiä, kuten karbonyyliselektiivistä leimausta LPMO:ille ja eri substraattien selektiivisten affiniteettien käyttämistä tuotettujen nanokuitujen täysimääräiseen hyödyntämiseen. Nämä menetelmät osoittavat potentiaalia näiden rajoitusten päihittämisessä tai ainakin lieventämisessä. Ei-hydrolyyttisten proteiinipohjaisten prosessien ja uusien analyyttisten tekniikoiden lisätutkimus voisi edistää kestävien selluloosapohjaisten biomateriaalien laajamittaista tuotantoa. Tämä kandidaatintyö puoltaa ei-hydrolyyttisen selluloosan muuntamisen jatkuvaa tutkimusta ja kehittämistä polkuna kohti vihreämpää materiaalitiedettä ja kestävää teollisuuden muutosta, erityisesti biopohjaisten tuotteiden näkökulmasta
Conditional Rasters: Sääntöpohjaisen suunnittelun vaikutus muokatun nonogrammitehtäväkirjan suunnittelussa
My production is a modified exercise book, in which the practices of conditional design are utilized. Nonograms are Japanese puzzles, in which grid squares are shaded in by analyzing numerical clues. I enjoy solving nonograms myself, and I am interested in their raster-like appearance. My production was created through a combination of a hobby of mine and unconventional design tools.
Conditional Design is a term coined by the Dutch studio Studio Moniker. The design tool centers on following strict ruleset, collaboration, and system-thinking. The end result of conditional design exercises are unknown. In this production, I utilize the practices of conditional design, and the production is inspired by these practices.
The production is a small publication, that includes 4 different nonogram exercises. Two nonograms are are solved by combining see-through paper and by using different colors. There's also a possibility to shade in the squares in different ways. Such as in conditional design, the game gives the player a chance for shared authorship on the end result.
The objective of the thesis is to present a visual communication tool that could be used in different fields. This production was successful, since I experimented with new design tools while making it. The project does not follow the practices of conditional design completely, and so the reason for the production was to showcase how to use a design tool in a modified way. My own goal is for other designers to utilize different tools to make their practice more diverse, and to improve on their visual communication skills.Produktioni on muunneltu nonogrammitehtäväkirja, jossa on hyödynnetty sääntöpohjaisen suunnittelun menetelmiä.
Breaking the Programming Language Barrier: Multilingual Prompting to Empower Non-Native English Learners
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).Non-native English speakers (NNES) face multiple barriers to learning programming. These barriers can be obvious, such as the fact that programming language syntax and instruction are often in English, or more subtle, such as being afraid to ask for help in a classroom full of native English speakers. However, these barriers are frustrating because many NNES students know more about programming than they can articulate in English. Advances in generative AI (GenAI) have the potential to break down these barriers because state of the art models can support interactions in multiple languages. Moreover, recent work has shown that GenAI can be highly accurate at code generation and explanation. In this paper, we provide the first exploration of NNES students prompting in their native languages (Arabic, Chinese, and Portuguese) to generate code to solve programming problems. Our results show that students are able to successfully use their native language to solve programming problems, but not without some difficulty specifying programming terminology and concepts. We discuss the challenges they faced, the implications for practice in the short term, and how this might transform computing education globally in the long term.Peer reviewe
