Tarkastelu keskittyy erityisesti rakennuksen julkisivuun, jonka kautta kiertotalouden periaatteet konkretisoituvat. The Construction sector consumes a lot of virgin raw materials and produces a significant share of Finland’s carbon dioxide emissions, accounting for around one third of the total. Following circular economy principles and using reused materials are practical ways to reduce the environmental impact of construction. The aim of this master’s thesis was to examine how circular design principles, particularly material reuse, affect architecture, the design process, and the final outcome. The thesis is based on a design competition organized in 2022 by Aalto University and the City of Helsinki, which aimed to develop a scalable warehouse building concept using reused materials. We won first prize in the competition together with Markus Saarela with our proposal LIPPA. The concept was put into practice through the City of Helsinki’s Closing Loops pilot project. The resulting maintenance and storage building was completed in Mustikkamaa in the summer of 2025. The thesis is divided into three parts. The first part introduces the concept of the circular economy in the context of the construction industry and explores its background and significance. It also discusses circular design principles through a literature review and case studies and addresses the role of anticipatory and material-driven design in situations where material availability is uncertain. Furthermore, it examines how the design process is shaped by the available materials and how reused materials can enrich architecture from aesthetic and cultural heritage perspectives. The second part focuses on the Closing Loops design competition held in 2022, examining how circular design principles influenced the proposed solutions and material choices. This section particularly investigates the role of reusable materials in architectural design and how they guided and shaped the design process. The third part focuses on the completed storage and maintenance building in Mustikkamaa, which was finished in the summer of 2025. It examines, how the LIPPA concept created during the competition was carried out in practice, and how well the original design goals were kept despite the limits set by the implementation phase. The examination focuses specifically on the building’s facade, where the principles of the circular economy are most clearly expressed. The study showed that the circular economy isn’t just about practical solutions; it also calls for a shift in how we design and think. The design process requires flexibility, the ability to deal with uncertainty, and a mindset that sees material limitations as creative opportunities and starting points for design. The concept’s design and implementation progressed step by step based on material availability. The design process was not linear but developed through a dialogue between the concept and the available resources. The practical design work confirmed the circular economy principles highlighted in the literature review, especially the importance of flexibility and material-driven design. The Mustikkamaa pilot project demonstrated that circular economy design principles were not a limiting factor but could serve as a basis for new perspectives and insights into what architecture can be when designed using reused materials. Using reused materials had a clear impact on the building’s architecture. It challenged traditional ideas about how buildings should look and what materials should look like, and it allowed for a new kind of relationship with the built environment, where materials tell their own stories and time is visible.Attachment notes Description: Diplomityön kansikuva Attachments: master_Saarela_Johanna_2025_cover.jp

Digitaalisilla kartoilla interaktiivisuuden merkitys on erittäin korostunut.

Vibration Analysis of Faulty Electric Motor in the Frequency Domain

    No full text
Electric induction motors (IM) are widely used in various industries and are prone to faults such as shaft misalignment. Detecting these faults is important to minimize downtime and to save costs. This study investigates the use of spectral centroid (SC) as a tool for detecting misalignment faults. Vibration data were collected and compared between a healthy IM, an IM with 0.5 mm of parallel misalignment, and an IM with 1 mm of parallel misalignment in all three axes of movement (X, Y, Z). A DC-generator was used as a load for the IM and data was collected under four different load conditions. The results showed a trend of SC being larger for the vibration of the misaligned IM in the X and Y directions and under lighter loads in the Z direction. However, under higher loads, the differences in SC between healthy and misaligned IMs became smaller in all directions of data. In the Z direction, for larger loads, the SC for the healthy motor surpassed that of the misaligned IMs. In addition, a statistical analysiswas performed on the vibration signals, where measures such as skewness, kurtosis, mean, median, and standard deviation were calculated. This statistical analysis showed that the standard deviation differed between the motors. A 0.5 mm misalignment had a standard deviation that was between 10% and 20% greater than the intact motor, and a 1 mm misalignment had up to twice the standard deviation of the intact motor. Other statistical methods did not show large deviations between the intact and misaligned motors. These findings suggest that SC has the potential to be an indicator of motors with misalignment faults, but in addition some limits, such as SC being orientation dependent. To create more robustness for the method, further research is necessary to validate the results, as the data set used in this study was limited.

Managing Technical Debt in Information Systems to Optimize Performance

    No full text
Technical debt in information systems represents the long-term consequences of adopting inefficient solutions for short-term gains. This thesis examines its causes, manifestations, and management practices through a literature review and an expert interview. The findings indicate that technical debt commonly arises from design trade-offs, outdated architectures, limited documentation, and short-term delivery pressures. These factors collectively reduce maintainability, restrict scalability, impair system performance, and generate tangible operational inefficiencies. Effective management of technical debt in information systems requires systematic documentation, prioritization of high-debt areas, and continuous developer education, complemented by emerging tools such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to support debt detection and modernization planning. The scope of this research is limited to information system management

L-Xylulose Reductase A and B from Aspergillus niger Have Distinct Biochemical Properties and Expression Profiles

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2025 The Author(s). Published by S. Karger AG, Basel.Introduction: D-Xylose and L-arabinose are major components of plant biomass and as such also important carbon sources for most fungi and attractive compounds for biotechnology. Most fungi use the pentose catabolic pathway to convert these sugars through several redox reactions. One of the steps in this pathway is the conversion of L-xylulose to xylitol, catalyzed by L-xylulose reductase (LXR). Genetic studies in Aspergillus niger revealed the involvement of two LXR-encoding genes, lxrA and lxrB.  Methods: LxrA and LxrB were heterologously produced and then purified. We analyzed their substrate specificities and enzyme kinetics and compared this to the expression profiles of the corresponding genes. We also explored the possibility of additional enzymes with LXR activity in A. niger and the conservation of LXR-encoding genes in other fungi.  Results: LxrA and LxrB showed significant differences in substrate specificity and kinetics. Evaluation of these genes and their homologs from A. niger and selected other fungi revealed high diversity at the level of number of homologs per species, phylogenetic relationship and expression profiles, suggesting species-specific adaptations in fungal sugar metabolism.  Conclusion: This study not only provides more detailed insights into an ecologically and biotechnologically important fungal metabolic pathway, but also demonstrates the high diversity of sugar metabolism in fungi. This is especially relevant when knowledge from one species is transferred to another, e.g., for the engineering of fungal cell factories.Peer reviewe

The Evolution of Computing Education Research: A Meta-Analytic Perspective

    No full text
Computing education research (CER) has gradually built its own identity as a research field. A part of this process has been the publication of a growing number of meta-studies which have explored the CER literature to identify the state of the art and trends in terms of active research topics, the nature of publications, use of different research methods, and the use and development of theoretical frameworks in papers published in different conferences and journals. In this chapter, we explore these meta-studies to build a picture of the way in which research in the field has developed. We identify trends over years, and discuss the implications of these findings for the future of the field.Peer reviewe

Design science research in operations management: is there a single type?

    No full text
Publisher Copyright: © 2024 Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Although many authors claimed that Design Science Research (DSR) could bring new insights to Operations Management (OM), this research method is still little used in OM studies. Aiming to present the main characteristics of DSR studies in the OM field, this study starts by conducting a systematic literature review of DSR studies published between 2013 and 2022. We identify that although DSR studies have increased in quantity and quality during this period, they remain concentrated in a few journals, authors and countries. DSR remains still under development in OM, and with a significant influence of the case study research method. Furthermore, we also propose that there is not just one type of DSR in OM, but two. The first type is practitioner-focused and highlights the empirical contributions and the results. The second is academy-focused and emphasises the methodology development and the understanding of how the results were generated. As those two types aim for different audiences, we believe that they will coexist in the future.Peer reviewe
