    Long days induce adaptive secondary dormancy in seed of the Mediterranean plant Aethionema arabicum

    Secondary dormancy is an adaptive trait that increases reproductive success by aligning seed germination with permissive conditions for seedling establishment. Aethionema arabicum is an annual plant and member of the Brassicaceae that grows in environments characterized by hot and dry summers. Aethionema arabicum seeds may germinate in early spring when seedling establishment is permissible. We demonstrate that long-day light regimes induce secondary dormancy in seed of Aethionema arabicum (CYP accession) repressing germination in summer when seedling establishment is riskier. Characterization of mutants screened for defective secondary dormancy demonstrated that RGL2 mediates repression of genes involved in GA signalling. Exposure to high temperature alleviates secondary dormancy, restoring germination potential. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that long-day-induced secondary dormancy and its alleviation by high temperatures, may be part of an adaptive response limiting germination to conditions permissive for seedling establishment in spring and autumn

    Nonparametric e-tests of symmetry

    The notion of an e-value has been recently proposed as a possible alternative to critical regions and p-values in statistical hypothesis testing. In this paper we consider testing the nonparametric hypothesis of symmetry, introduce analogues for e-values of three popular nonparametric tests, define an analogue for e-values of Pitman's asymptotic relative efficiency, and apply it to the three nonparametric tests. We discuss limitations of our simple definition of asymptotic relative efficiency and list directions of further research

    The Widrow-Hoff LMS (or ‘Adaline’) algorithm developedoriginally in 1960 is fundamental to the operation of countlesssignal processing machine learning systems in use eventoday. Bernard Widrow and Ted Hoff famously developedan Adaline machine demonstrator using basic analog offthe shelf components to show how a ‘perceptron’ couldbe trained manually [1]. This paper details the design anddevelopment of a fully digital Adaline Least-Mean-Squarealgorithm demonstrator. The simplistic design presented hereis completely open-source with all code, bill of materialsand 3D casing models available at this Github Repository fordownload and reproduction. The demonstrator enables quickvisualisation of the training and testing of a simple perceptronalgorithm running on the inexpensive Arduino platform. Thetotal costs of the device is estimated to be less than $60 andcould be used in classrooms and colleges the world-over todemonstrate the seminal work of Widrow and Hoff [2] to awide audience
