    LeadinCare:A Qualitative Informed Digital Training Platform Development to Increase Physicians’ Soft Communication Skills After COVID-19

    The post-COVID-19 pandemic era has placed new demands on physicians. One of these demands is the need to use targeted knowledge and soft communication skills, to address the psychosocial problems (e.g. vaccine hesitancy, fears) of individuals with Chronic Physical Illnesses (CPIs). Focusing on training physicians in targeted soft communication skills can help health care systems to address psychosocial-type problems. Yet, such training programs are rarely implemented, effectively.This study aimed to (a) understand physicians’ implementation challenges when using soft communication skills during the COVID-19 pandemic; (b) identify beliefs, barriers, and facilitators that can influence physicians’ behaviours to use soft communication skills; and (c) inform the content of the LeadinCare; a new digital training platform, designed to improve physicians’ soft communication skills, by leveraging the TDF Theoretical Domain Framework (TDF).We conducted 14 in-depth semi-structured interviews with physicians in Greece, supporting non-COVID-19 cases with CPIs. We analyzed their data using inductive and deductive approaches.Physicians highlighted time, inability to see patients in person, absence of space for non-COVID-19 cases, and poor organizational procedures as barriers to using soft communication skills. Five TDF domains (beliefs) were identified as the most salient to inform the LeadinCare platform: (1) practical and well-organized knowledge; (2) skills that support patients and their relatives; (3) physicians’ beliefs about capabilities to use the skills; (4) beliefs about consequences of using the skills (job satisfaction); and (5) the use of digital, interactive, and on-demand platforms (environmental context & resources). We mapped the domains in six narrative-based practices that informed the content of the LeadinCare.Physicians need skills that go beyond talking and towards cultivating resilience and flexibility

    With hand on heart:A cardiac Rubber Hand Illusion

    Body illusions such as the Rubber Hand Illusion (RHI) have highlighted how multisensory integration underpins the sense of one’s own body. Much of this research has focused on senses arising from outside the body (e.g. vision and touch), but sensations from within the body may also play a role. In a pre-registered study, participants completed a cardiac variation of the RHI, where taps to the finger occurred in or out of time with the heartbeat. We replicated the RHI effect, showing that synchronous but not asynchronous taps to the real and rubber hand increased sensations of embodiment over the rubber hand and caused a shift in the perceived hand location. However, there were no significant influences of cardiac timing on embodiment, nor did it interact with visuo-tactile synchrony. An exploratory analysis found a three-way interaction between synchrony, cardiac timing and interoceptive accuracy as measured by a heartbeat counting task, such that greater interoceptive accuracy was associated with lower embodiment ratings in the systole condition compared to diastole, but only during synchronous stimulation. Although our novel methodology successfully replicated the RHI, our findings suggest that the cooccurence of vision and touch with cardiac signals may make little contribution to the sense of one’s body

    Creation and validation of the Online Self-Disclosure via Educational Platforms Scale

    Globally, higher education (HE) institutions now implement some element of hybrid learning, heightened since the COVID-19 pandemic and temporary shift to online learning. To communicate, online self-disclosure (revealing information about the self) is required. The majority of HE students are aged between 18-24 years, which is considered the developmentally sensitive period of ‘emerging adulthood’. Having only ever known a digitally-connected world, emerging adults self-disclose differently to other generations when communicating via an online environment. Whilst communicating online with HE staff, students may self-disclose in a way that misaligns with the expectations of staff; this may result in miscommunication or over-disclosure (revealing inappropriate information to a misjudged audience). Over-disclosing via online educational platforms (e.g., Moodle, MS Teams, and e-mail) may result in negative feedback from staff and this may impact student experience, engagement and attainment. Problematically, no standardized measure exists that captures student self-disclosure via online educational platforms and so research on this topic is currently limited and theoretically unstable. Via a three-phase study, comprising four studies and 283 participants, we have created and conducted an initial evaluation of the online self-disclosure via educational platforms (OSDEP) scale. The OSDEP scale is the first psychometric tool to specifically measure HE students’ online self-disclosure behaviors specifically within an online educational context. The OSDEP scale can be used for future educational and pedagogical research to further understand HE students’ online self-disclosure behaviors and to what extent these may be associated with topics such as mental health, engagement, attainment, and student experience

    The experience of living with vitiligo in Nigeria:A participatory Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis

    Vitiligo is a visible depigmenting skin condition, particularly noticeable on Black skin. There is widespreadmisunderstanding of the condition. Using a participatory form of Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis(IPA), we conducted eight semi-structured interviews with Nigerians living with vitiligo. Participantsdescribed their initial attempts to understand the condition, which typically drew on both traditional illnessbeliefs, religious influences, and the biomedical disease model. All participants reported experiencing markedstigmatization and discrimination. Participants experienced distress associated with thoughts about the personalmeaning of the disease including its impact on their appearance and from concerns about anticipatedand direct discrimination. Despite the wide-ranging impact, the participants’ narratives also contained referencesto the development of strategies that maintained wellbeing. This study provides valuable insights intothe role of faith and traditional beliefs in both the experience and management of vitiligo in Nigeria. Theseinsights can be used to develop individual and community interventions

    Materializing design fictions for metaverse services

    As the state-of-the-art stands, our knowledge of designing Metaverse platforms is limited. In this paper we propose that design fictions are the first form of prototyping and explore how ‘materializing’ a design fiction can help cement or refute assumptions that drive the development of a software-based system toward a first Minimum Viable Product. Our context is a platform for trading music memorabilia in the Metaverse, integrating content sitting across archives, record labels, publishers, and private collections in an immersive and accessible manner. The design fiction provided both a means of exploring the businessassumptions of our industry partner and co-creating an experience of value to its intended audience. As key outcomes, the approach was of value in shapingbusiness assumptions, developing an enhanced understanding of the audience and allowing them to cocreate, shaping technology needs and identifying partners necessary for the development

    Inductive Venn-Abers Predictive Distributions:New Applications & Evaluation

    Venn-Abers predictors offer a distribution-free probabilistic framework that generates calibrated predictions from the outputs of scoring classifiers, relying on minimal assumptions about the data distribution. This paper explores the extension of this framework from classification to regression, producing predictive distributions. We show how to evaluate the efficacy of the framework by comparing various metrics that assess the accuracy and informativeness of the predictions. We also show that the framework can be used for real-time prediction, using datasets from predictive maintenance and energy consumption forecasting

    Foraging distance distributions reveal how honeybee waggle dance recruitment varies with landscape

    Honeybee (Apis mellifera) colonies use a unique collective foraging system, the waggle dance, to communicate and process the location of resources. Here, we present a means to quantify the effect of recruitment on colony forager allocation across the landscape by simply observing the waggle dance on the dancefloor. We show first, through a theoretical model, that recruitment leaves a characteristic imprint on the distance distribution of foraging sites that a colony visits, which varies according to the proportion of trips driven by individual search. When we fit this model to the real-world empirical distance distribution of forage sites visited by 20 honeybee colonies in urban and rural landscapes across South East England, obtained via dance decoding, we find considerable variation in the use of dancing in colony foraging, particularly in agri-rural landscapes. In our dataset, reliance on dancing increases as arable land gives way to built-up areas, suggesting that dancing may have the greatest impact on colony foraging in the complex and heterogeneous landscapes of forage-rich urban areas. Our model provides a tool to assess the relevance of this extraordinary behaviour across modern anthropogenic landscape type
