    This dataset was created to support the following publication: Black, Suzanne R., Sabrina Carter, Graham Hitchen, Gavin Inglis, Brendan Miles, Melissa Terras, and Frauke Zeller. 2025. ‘UK Innovation in Immersive XR Technologies for Screen, Performance and Digital Entertainment: UKRI Funding Trends and Insights (2006–2024)’. CoSTAR Foresight Lab. https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15387420. This dataset contains details of 529 projects funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) between 2006 and 2024 related to Extended Realty (XR) for the purposes of screen, performance and digital entertainment. It was created from the UKRI Gateway to Research database (https://gtr.ukri.org/). All information is taken from that database, without further editing or correction, as of 6 November 2024. We defined a project as being in scope if it mentioned the use of developing immersive technologies for the purposes of screen, performance or digital entertainment or a direct application of immersive technologies for those purposes. Key search terms were used to search Gateway to Research to identify potentially relevant projects: “virtual reality”, “virtual production” OR VP, “extended reality” OR XR, immersive, “game engine” and “augmented reality”. For all of the projects returned using these key word searches the description of each project was checked by the research team to verify its relevance. Some of the projects extended to infrastructure, such as labs, facilities and research programmes, and some involved applications of XR technologies for a specific use case, such as the creation of a site-specific museum exhibit. For each relevant project identified, we collected data on 15 metrics, where available. These are: Date data collected, URL, Project title, Lead research org, Department name, Abstract, Organisations, People, Funder, Funded value, Start date, End date, Project category, Project reference, Research topic. We also added a column for project ID. It should be noted that Gateway to Research only contains data about UKRI-funded projects, and that other organisations also fund XR activity in the UK, such as Research England, Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Arts Council Wales, Digital Catapult, National Lottery Heritage Fund and Wellcome Trust as well as the higher education sector, and industry. Our dataset only contains UKRI funded projects and activities documented in UKRI Gateway to Research. Research ethics approval was obtained from Edinburgh College of Art, University of Edinburgh.     How Functional Groups Influence Asphaltene Aggregation: Molecular Simulations and Small-Angle Neutron Scattering

    The dataset consists of a sample LAMMPS input file, sample LAMMPS data files for each asphaltene in 2:8 heptane:toluene mixtures, and the raw data plotted in Figures 3, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12. Asphaltenes are polycyclic aromatic molecules found in high-molecular-weight fractions of crude oil. They dissolve in aromatic solvents like toluene but not in aliphatic solvents like heptane. Low solubility leads to aggregate formation and many problems in transport applications. Natural asphaltene fractions contain complex mixtures of molecules that vary widely between sources of crude oil, and so the chemical and structural properties are difficult to characterize. Herein, three synthetic asphaltenes containing different oxidation states of sulfur in binary mixtures of toluene and heptane are studied. Aggregate formation is investigated using a combination of small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The extent of aggregation is found to depend strongly on both the composition of the solvent and the functionality of the sulfur atom. A benzothiophene-functionalized asphaltene, without any oxygen, forms nanoaggregates in toluene that do not change significantly on addition of heptane. In contrast, asphaltenes containing the sulfoxide or sulfone analogs form nanoaggregates in toluene and much larger clusters above 40% by volume heptane content, with the initial nanoaggregates of the sulfone being slightly larger. Such behavior is apparent in both measured and simulated scattering profiles, and while these techniques probe different length scales, the results are consistent. The microscopic structures of the simulated aggregates are detailed. In systems with low heptane content, the asphaltenes form small clusters of 2-4 molecules, depending on the functionality. In systems with greater heptane content, the sulfoxide and sulfone form larger clusters. The variations in clustering behavior between functional groups and solvents are attributed mainly to the electrostatic interactions between the polar sulfur-containing functional groups, which stabilize "head-to-tail" configurations in the sulfoxide aggregates and more complex branched structures in the sulfone aggregates

    Effect of chronic ACTH infusion on blood pressure and kidney sodium excretion in male C56BL6J mice

    Cushing Syndrome, reflecting endogenous overproduction of ACTH or exogenous exposure to glucocorticoid medication, increases cardiovascular risk. Hypertension is a major factor but underlying mechanisms are not clearly defined. We modelled Cushing Syndrome in male C57BL/6J mice with prolonged ACTH infusion and measured blood pressure on control diet and following high salt intake. In a separate group we assessed renal function and salt excretion, the in vivo pressure natriuresis response and ex vivo artery function. We found that ACTH infusion impairs sodium excretion and causes a transition to non-dipping and salt-sensitive BP. Renal hemodynamic and tubular abnormalities impair the pressure natriuresis response. Our findings provide a landscape of the complex physiological response to ACTH excess that may contribute to poor cardiovascular health in Cushing Syndrome

    Data for the paper "The puncture resistance of Bombyx mori silk cocoons", the abstract for which follows: This paper considers the puncture resistance of both Bombyx mori full cocoons (FC) and cocoon wall cutouts (CWC) subjected to the conditions of dynamic and static loading. The behaviour of both FC and CWC was characterised by assessment of deflection, needle penetration, and perforation. The apparent cocoon area was found to reduce linearly during puncture, reaching 8.3% of its initial value ( 0.05), with 89% of the puncture sabot kinetic energy dissipated during penetration, demonstrating efficiency in energy absorption. Strain measurements reveal equatorial strain to be 0.16 while meridional strains are measured at 0.01. Auxetic behaviour is noted to occur along the meridional axis of full cocoons with a Poisson’s ratio recorded at -0.004. Comparing this to the equatorial Poisson’s ratio of 0.11 in full cocoons, highlights anisotropy of the cocoons. The uniform geometry of the needle radially distributes load. Although puncture strengths do not differ statistically, static tests reveal distinct force–displacement behaviours, with FC materials exhibiting ductile toughening prior to failure, and CWC materials linearly strain stiffening prior to brittle rupture. Failure initiates via interlaminar shear from sericin bond cracking, which progresses due to fibre displacement and stretching, culminating in rupture propagation while opposing compressive forces induce frictional and tensile fibre failure.     Experimental data and plotting scripts (MATLAB) correspond to the project "Role of preload in determining the performance enhancement of tidal turbines by passive pitch". The project studied the effect of spring preload in a passive blade pitch mechanism used for alleviating load fluctuations in tidal turbines. The data set has been produced in FloWave on a model-scale tidal turbine (December 2023). The data covers measured turbine loads for two far stream flow speeds, measured for a fixed-pitch turbine and a passively pitching counterpart at varied tip speed ratios. For the passively pitching case, three preloads have been tested, to show that the choice in spring preloads affects the point of matched time-averaged performance between passively pitching and fixed pitch turbines

    Characterization of water adhesion on electrospun PCL fibres

    The study of water wettability is crucial in agriculture, heat exchange, and biomedical applications; however, water adhesion receives limited attention despite being distinct from wettability and lateral pinning forces. Water adhesion is particularly relevant in designing hydrophobic surfaces with high normal adhesion, a property commonly correlated with wettability. Yet, materials with similar wettability can exhibit differences in water adhesion. We examined the water adhesion phenomena on hydrophobic electrospun fibers composed of polycaprolactone (PCL) with varying concentrations of poly(lactide-co-caprolactone) (PLCL) using a micromechanical balance. The aim is to explore how variations in chemical composition and morphology affect water adhesion. Through spreading and withdrawing experiments, as well as comparison with static and dynamic contact angles, we identified a correlation between contact angle hysteresis and the maximum adhesion force. This finding contrasts with previous research that focused solely on receding contact angles, highlighting how contact angle hysteresis provides the best correlation with maximum adhesion force for fibrous hydrophobic surfaces. Given the challenges in measuring contact angle hysteresis on fibrous hydrophobic surfaces, this study also suggests adhesion tensiometry as a potentially more robust and accessible method for these materials
