    The attached files contain data derived from the long term field project monitoring individual Soay sheep on St Kilda and their environment. This is a request to please let us know if you use them. Several people have spent the best part of their careers collecting the data. If you plan to analyse the data, there are a number of reasons why it would be very helpful if you could contact Dan Nussey ([email protected]) before doing so. [NB. If you are interested in analysing the detailed project data in any depth you may find it helpful to have our full relational database rather than the file(s) available here. If so, then we have a simple process for bringing you onto the project as a collaborator.] The data can be subject to change due to updates in the pedigree, merging of records, occasional errors and so on. The data are complex and workers who do not know the study system may benefit from advice when interpreting it. At any one time a number of people within the existing project collaboration are analysing data from this project. Someone else may already be conducting the analysis you have in mind and it is desirable to prevent duplication of effort. In order to maintain funding for the project(s), every few years we have to write proposals for original analyses to funding agencies. It is therefore very helpful for those running the project to know what data analyses are in progress. Individual identifiers may vary relative to other data archives from papers using the individual-level data.     Action research at the BBC:Interrogating artificial intelligence with journalists to generate actionable insights for the newsroom

    In this paper, we provide reflections from an embedded action research project undertaken at the UK’s largest public service broadcaster, the BBC, over a three-year period. It was aimed at eliciting research insights about the role and understanding of AI in news production and also intervening to engender change in the newsroom. We surface the messy realities of conducting this work, including the challenges to funding such long-term and resource-intensive research and the difficulties of measuring impacts. We include practical guidance to demystify the process of action-oriented research that strives for targeted change in news contexts, highlighting the need for researchers to cost in time for translational work and the importance of having ‘critical friends’ to hold them to account. Ultimately, we emphasise the value of action research in journalism studies and particularly at the nexus of news and technology. We argue for approaches that retain a critical perspective whilst closing the gap between theory, critique, and practice

    The role of the VWF/ADAMTS13 axis in the thromboinflammatory response in ischaemic stroke after SARS-CoV2 infection

    BackgroundSARS-CoV2 infections increase the risk of ischaemic stroke (IS), potentially through a thromboinflammatory cascade driven by an imbalance in the ratio of Von Willebrand Factor (VWF) and a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with a thrombospondin type 1 motif, member 13 (ADAMTS13), leading to the formation of ultra-large VWF (UL-VWF). However, the SARS-CoV2 infection’s contribution to any VWF/ADAMTS13 axis imbalance and the subsequent thromboinflammatory response post-stroke remains poorly understood.MethodsWe performed a detailed thromboinflammatory profile of the plasma samples from three experimental cohorts matched by age, sex and stroke severity: non-stroke controls (n=23), SARS-CoV2 negative IS (n=22) and SARS-CoV2 positive IS (n=24). SARS-CoV2 positive IS patients presented varying degree of infection severity.ResultsWe observed an increase in VWF and UL-VWF and a decrease in ADAMTS13 in the SARS-CoV2 positive IS cohort, suggesting a VWF/ADAMTS13 axis imbalance. Interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels were positively correlated with VWF and negatively correlated with ADAMTS13 suggesting that IL-6 may drive this imbalance. Fibrinogen and D-Dimers were elevated in SARS-CoV2 negative IS cohort and SARS-CoV2 positive IS cohort, but D-Dimers were within normal range, indicating no disseminated intravascular coagulation. Factor IX (FIX) was elevated in the SARS-CoV2 negative IS cohort. Tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) was elevated in the SARS-CoV2 positive IS cohort, suggesting no fibrinolysis defects. Matrix Metalloproteinase-2 (MMP-2) and soluble Intracellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (sICAM-1) were elevated in the SARS-CoV2 negative IS cohort.ConclusionsWe show that SARS-CoV2 infections drive a VWF/ADAMTS13 axis imbalance, inducing an increase in tPA, while decreasing FIX, MMP-2 and sICAM-1 post-stroke

    Capital cities in multi-level settings:Assessing Scottish and Welsh residents’ perceptions of London, Edinburgh and Cardiff

    Devolution processes, while aiming to transfer power to sub-state entities, contribute to creating new political, administrative, and economic centres. Consequently, in multi-level systems, we observe the coexistence of state-wide and sub-state capital cities, which may be perceived differently by citizens. This article focuses on the United Kingdom and analyses the results of an original survey conducted in Scotland and Wales. In these two devolved nations, sub-state capital cities, Edinburgh and Cardiff, ‘compete’ with the UK capital, London. Respondents were asked to assess these three cities across three dimensions: the individual/value dimension, the symbolic dimension, and the integrative dimension. While, overall, both Edinburgh and Cardiff outperform London on all three dimensions, important differences exist among respondents. This study shows that far from being neutral, the role of capital cities in devolved jurisdictions can be highly politicised and is also closely associated with individual preferences for more or less decentralisation

    The syntactic constraint on English auxiliary contraction

    We offer a new explanation for the difference between cases where an auxiliary verb can and cannot contract, such as Kim is coming versus Kim is. Rather than a banning constraint, we argue that there is a positive syntactic licensing constraint. We consider, and reject, both the familiar Gap restriction and a range of phonological explanations. Our analysis rests on the category of grammatical relations, valent, which includes all non-adjuncts (i.e. all subjects and complements); the analysis consists of a single claim, the Following Valent Constraint: that a contracted auxiliary has an overt following valent. We show how this analysis explains the full range of data that has been discussed in the literature and how a minor variant of the constraint captures the data of the Scots Locative Discovery Expressions. We also propose a sociolinguistic explanation for the inability of auxiliaries to contract in certain environments such as after a preposed negative. Finally, we suggest a functional explanation for the proposed constraint: it allows the hearer to predict the presence of a following valent and thereby to manage the burden of processing
